  1. Congrats! Your verbal score is lot better then I can dream of.
  2. Erin, I was told by ETS test center that I could not take two tests in one month. So I decided not to retake the test and want to concentrate on the application processes instead.
  3. Erin, Thank you so much! You are a great man. Even though we never met, and are thousand of miles from each other, I feel like you are one of my best friends. I think a lot of folks feel that way too on this forum. "Meeting Hok-Ming @ Harvard" is a beautiful dream! I will try my best to fulfill this dream. :shy: And I wish all the best for you and your famous web site.:)
  4. Erin and Others, Thank you for your warm words and good comments. Even though the score is not bad, but not impressive enough to impress admission officers at H/W/S. And the most important thing here is that I may be able to do a little better by timing better, so I may, as you suggested, retake it in two weeks, and I will lose nothing if I get a score equal or lower.[xx(] I agree with you 125% that the timing is one of THE most important factors during the high stress long test. If you can pace yourself better, you simply can overcome some of the pressures and nervousness and ultimately do better or at least be yourself. Hope everybody can learn from mistake I made. During my test, the difficulty of the math section was at what you can see in GMAT official guide, I the last question on my test is a simple question about probability. On the verbal section, there are 4 RCs, in which I did the first one badly, that may be why I did not feel the other 3 RCs as difficult as the first one, the computer program probably lowed the difficulty factors later for me.[:(!] For SC, I can remember nothing, I did not feel confident with any of the SC questions, they appeared more difficlut than the questions in GMAT [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. For CR, I have encountered two BOLD FACE questions and did not answer them without doubts.
  5. Erin, I took the GMAT on 9/14/02 and got a score of 700. Math 50 97%, Verbal 35 76%, 93% overall. I was a bit disappointed by the performance of my verbal section. The 3th question of the verbal section is a RC with there questions, however, it took me a little more time than it should be. I was so upset and speed up during the following questions, THIS IS A MISTAKE! and some of questions did not have too much time to think thoroughly, in turn I finished the verbal section 5 mins ahead of time, if I could slow down a bit, and if I can do one or tow more question correct, I should get a more reasonalbe score. However, however, ... Do I need re-take in two weeks? the application deadline is near. I guess the SC part bogged me down.
  6. Q:Producing one unit, the possibility of defective is 0.01.If now produce ten units, what is the possibility of the situation that there must be one unit that is defective?
  7. This is the correct answer because the number of people did not buy the book due to excerpt reading is smaller than the number of people did buy due to excerpt reading. The net gain for alluring more people to buy the book is obvious, therefore support the argument. This option is totally irrelevant. Another irrelevant option. The fact that "proportinoal" does not necessarily establish a causal relationship between the two facts, it could simply be because a popular book caused the more excerpts published in magazines, not the other way around. "Suitable" does not mean actually "did" publish in a magamine, again this is irrelevant to the argument.
  8. Let the trangle be ABC, if we draw a diameter from one vertex of the trangle, AD (the diameter) and we link point B with D, we are getting a new right trangle ABD with angle B as right angle. Then, length AD = 2 BD ( equilateral triangle's inner angles equal to 60 degree, therefore angle BAD is 30 degree), suppose AD = x => DB = 0.5x. Because ABD is a right trangle, AD^2 = DB^2 + AB^2 or x^2 = (0.5x)^2 + a^2 So that we can get x = 2a / v3 (where v3 denotes 'root-3')
  9. In order to make a 2 gallon misture, we need (3/8) * 2 gallon of white paint and (5/8)*2 of blank paint. (3/8)*2 = 3/4 gallon --> there are no 3/4 gallon for sale we have to buy 1 gallon instead. (5/8)*2 = 5/4 gallon --> similarly, we have to buy 1 and half gallon of Blank to cover the black part of paint. So, we need buy 1 gallon of while and 1 and half gallons of blank. Total 2 and half gallons. therefore answer B is correct.
  10. Q: Is the quadrilateral ABCD is a parallelogram? 1) angle (ABC) = 90 2) angle (ADC) = 90 To help you imagine ... quadrilateral can have the interior angles 90, 120, 90, 60 degrees, for example. http://www.gvsu.edu/math/students/bst/Image53.gif This is definitely not a parallelogram.
  11. I think you made the right choice again, C is correct. There are two ways to express "demand", "recommend" when you use require. (1) require sb. to do sth. The government requires all retailers to charge a 50% tax on all sales. [v] (2) require that + subjunctive sentence The government requires that all retailer charge a 50% tax on all sales. In A, "will" is unnecessary, therefore wrong.
  12. You are right. C is the best choice. Parellel structure --> become .. and enter ... D is not correct because there is no need to use a past tense "entered" here.
  13. "pleaded guilt to a crime" is idiomatic. therefore, pleaded guilt (in a federal district court) to failing to report ... is the correct answer.
  14. This is a sentence with subjunctive expression. That's why in the IF sentence, a perfect tense is used to show an action that Charles did not do in the past.
  15. Hi Erin, I misread the "females" for "males" in opion A, that is why I choosed A, my bad. Therefore I agree with you that this is a bad CR, and I got it from 800Scores.com
  16. Erin, thank you for remember that. It's a shame that I still feel not ready.
  17. In a monogamous culture, 90% of the adults are married. The average number of children per family is five and over-population is a threat. Programs to encourage birth-control have been ineffective. It has been suggested that this failure is due to these programs ignoring a tradition that values male children very highly, so that every parent wants to have at least one son. It is proposed that couples be encouraged to use birth-control measures after the birth of their first son. If this proposal is widely accepted in the culture, we may expect that: A) the rate of population increase will be slowed, and future generations will contain a disproportionately high number of females. B) the rate of population increase will be slowed, and the gender balance in future generations will remain as it is at present. C) the rate of population growth will remain the same, and future generations will contain a disproportionately high number of females. D) there will be no significant effect either on population growth or on gender balance. E) the population will decline precipitously, because approximately half of all families will have only a single child. I choosed A, but the answer is B. Anybody wants to comment.
  18. Hi Shipra, On all sizes of the leading brand it makes a profit of 15 percent of the cost per jug. ==> One Ounce of the leading brand it makes a profit of 15 percent of the cost per Ounce Suppose one Ounce of the leading brand costs the owner X dollar ==> The profit of the sale of one Ounce leading brand is X*15% Similarly, Suppose one Ounce of the its own brand costs the owner Y dollar ==> The profit of the sale of one Ounce its own brand is Y*10% (1) apparently is not sufficient. (2) tells us that the supermarket sells 25% percent more of its own brand than that of the leading brand, a premise that can be interpreted as following: Suppose the supermarket sells 100 Ounce leading brand, and thus it sells 125 Ounce (25% more than 100) of its own brand. Which makes more profit? ==> 100 Ounce * (X*15%) Dollars/Ounce 125 Ounce * (Y*10%) Dollars/Ounce Because there are two unknowns X and Y, we cannot determine which makes more profit at all. Therefore the answer should be E.
  19. Smoking in bed has long been the main cause of home fires. Despite a significant decline in cigarette smoking in the last two decades, there has been no comparable decline in the number of people killed in home fires. Each one of the following statements, if true over the last two decades, helps to resolve the apparent discrepancy above EXCEPT: A) Compared to other types of home fires, home fires caused by smoking in bed usually cause relatively little damage before they are extinguished. B) Home fires caused by smoking in bed often break out after the home's occupants have fallen asleep. C) Smokers who smoke in bed tend to be heavy smokers who are less likely to quit smoking than are smokers who do not smoke in bed. D) An increasing number of people have been killed in home fires that started in the kitchen. E) Population densities have increased, with the result that one home fire can cause more deaths than in previous decades. I choosed A, however the answer is B, which confused me, anybody cares to explain.
  20. The new sports car is heavier than for a performance automobile, but it is exceptional because of its high-powered engine. A) usual B) it is usual C) one usually is D) is usual E) has been usual I choosed A, but the answer said D, why? I thought both subject and verb can be eliminated, if "than" clause has the same subject and verb as the main sentence does.
  21. You may have a point. Let's wait our judge to delivery the verdict. Ladies and gentlemen, the Magician of GMAT grammar -- Erin!
  22. C has at least two problems. First, "their prize" should be "their prizes". Second, "To pick up their prize" to modify the whole sentence changed the meaning of A.
  23. Hi bwind3, I agree with you that there are so many problems with the given answers. I hope makumbeiro posted a set of anwsers for a different set of questions. Anyway, here are my answers to the questions, Erin and everybody, please tell me which one I did wrong. 1.B 2.A 3.C 4.C 5.B 6.E 7.D 8.C 9.C 10.B 11.D 12.E 13.C 14.D 15.B 16.D 17. D 18.A 19.E 20.E 21.E 22.D 23.D 24.D 25.A
  24. By putting date at the begining, the "By the 21st century" has a duty first to modify the main sentence, and thus make the wrong impression that the National Pasta Association will predict this in the 21st century.
