  1. Long Time! :) *Nostalgic* Hi to every one on this forum! What an enriching place -- to meet people from different parts of the world with different backgrounds but a common interest - to learn, share ideas, and grow together. Good Luck with all your endeavors! Hats off, Erin! [clap] I owe a lot to this forum.
  2. Hello everyone, and Erin !!! visiting this forum after a long long time ... all the best to everyone ...
  3. Thanks for the response, Michael, I agree with your definitions (= They match with mine.) And yeah the context should help, but the difference is not so obvious with "oversight". For instance, when I say ... Mike is responsible for the oversight of financial matters in his organization. Am I just describing your job, or accusing you?
  4. A reputed Business Daily reports ... I wanted to know whether this is grammatically correct and if so, whether it is recommended. Because, as far as I know, "oversight" is used more in the other sense of the word -- namely the mistake of failing to see some detail. I felt the sentence would have sounded better this way ... I would also like to know: in what sense is the word "overlook" most commonly used. Thanks in advance.
  5. Hi Michael, Thanks for your time -- it surely helps. I guess it's evident that there can be no single set of best practices covering all media of communication. What is appropiate for a printed scientific journal will not be so for, say, an online news portal. Your post has reinforced a couple of my beliefs -- that readability should be the ultimate aim underlying ones choice; and that consistency matters. Simply put, pick a style that suits the application best, and then stick to it. Afterall "Communication" is the objective. The text and its style are just the means. Thanks again.
  6. That says it all Erin. Gee.... I should have never told you that I used to do it myself :p By the way, after I read your reply, I thought of Googling it and here's what it returned ... A *LONG* discussion on the very same issue ... http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/29691 A guide on technical writing ... http://www.io.com/~hcexres/tcm1603/acchtml/high.html An excerpt ... From The "University of Chicago Press" Manual of Style ... http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/cmosfaq/cmosfaq.CapitalizationTitles.html Now, I plan to read through these articles myself :) Have a great day ahead, Erin!
  7. Hi All (after a long long time), Had a small clarification to seek ... Occassionally, I see capitalization being used to emphasize parts of a sentence. Example: URL: http://www.omg.org/gettingstarted/what_is_uml.htm Here, "Essential Part" has been capitalized just to add emphasis. I used to practice this a lot in my school days, and my teacher used to tell me NOT to show my Love for certain Words by capitalizing them. :) Now that I have come across a similar usage in an official document, I wanted to clarify it anyway -- once and for all -- whether it is a good practice. Please let me know what you think ... Also by the way, as we use the electronic medium more and more for official purposes, I would like to hear any comments/pointers on various different ways of adding emphasis ... and when to use them best ... Bold, Italics, Underline, ALLCAPS, Mixed Case, and even other *exotic* forms of ::emphasis:: Thank you.
  8. Ummm... Naughty :D .... Are you sure you are posting this on the right forum? :p Err ... on a serious note, ... Let me know if I can help. PS: Please be more specific with your requests in the future. That will only help you in drawing responses from those who can help you the best. The Title of your post, if descriptive, will help others -- both those willing to help you, and those seeking similar help.
  9. A recent Economist Article begins thus ... FOR the past two years and, according to projections, this year and next as well, the Indian economy has managed to grow at around 7% or better. Well, if I may be so bold, ... is this sentence grammatically correct? For, the following phrases do not agree in tense. ..., this year and next as well, the Indian economy has managed to grow at around 7% or better. Thanks in advance.
  10. Some could answer this question intuitively ... just by looking at these functions. If you have a "feel" for the way functions behave, and some exposure to concepts like linearity and commutativity. If that's not your way, a slightly time-taking way is to do "substitution" ... starting with the most simple of the functions and eliminating the wrong options ... b. f(x)=x+1 f(a+b) = a+b+1 f(a)+f(b) = (a+1)+(b+1) = a+b+2 POOF! a. f(x)=x^2 f(a+b) = (a+b)^2 = a^2+b^2+2.a.b f(a)+f(b) = a^2+b^2 POOF! e. f(x)=-3x f(a+b) = -3(a+b) f(a)+f(b) = -3(a) + -3(b) = -3(a+b) YEAH! Let me know if that helps.
  11. And I am delighted to see your reply. For a moment I thought you were talking about AmigoRo :) . Thanks for the kind words Erin. Now it's my turn to enquire ... Have you been in touch with AmigoRo or Sri ? I shall take her example. Yeah Erin, I am doing all well. Hope the same with you and other friends of mine here. I guess a re-introduction and update is due on my part: Once upon a time ... I had finished my GRE (2170 - Old pattern) and was entering the final year of my Engineering studies. Then, I stumbled upon Test Magic while searching for TOEFL resources. And what a find it was! I owe my TOEFL score (297/300 and 6/6) in large part to Test Magic and especially Erin. I applied for a handful of universities in the US, got a couple of admission offers. Again, Test Magic and Erin, personally, helped me a lot in the application process. However, I had also appeared for a couple of MBA Entrances back home in India -- without any serious prep, though. A couple of them fructified. I weighed the options and decided on doing an MBA in India. I joined IIT-Delhi (deciding against an offer from IIT-Kharagpur after paying the fee) I have completed my masters this may. I am now working as a Business Analyst with an IT-Services company based in India. Ever heard of Wipro?
  12. E. 24 --------------------------- Let R = Length of Red Sticks W' = Avg length of sticks in Box W V' = Avg length of sticks in Box V Given: R = W' - 18 = V' + 6 W' - V' = 6 + 18 = 24
  13. Let the digits be a,b,c. Given, c is non-zero. Let's use "x" to denote unkown digits ... (1) k+9 = x3x => (k >= x21) and (k (2) k+4 = x2x => (k >= x16) and (k (1) unambiguously tells us that b=2 (2) doesn't So, (1) alone would do. Hope that helps.
  14. QUESTION 18 A company employs 400 workers. Of these 125 people are aged from 40 to 50. A stratified sample of 50 is planned. What number of people should be sampled from the above age group, to the nearest number? 1. 12 2. 16 3. 18 4. 22 ------------------------------------------------------- Here 400 is the 'population size' and 50 is the 'sample size'. For any statistical study to be valid, the sample should be "representative" i.e., it should represent the distribution of various parameters (as closely as possible) of the original poulation from which it is drawn. Here the parameter is Age. The sample should have the same proportion of people aged 40-50 as the original population. Thus ... if X people out of the sample of 50 are aged 40 to 50, X / 50 = 125 / 400 X = 15.625 = approx. 16 ------------------------------------------------------- Answer: 2. 16 Hope that helps.
