It is true. I saw the list there today. It is not exactly on "the department's door", but on the graduate program administrator's.
  2. I was impressed in my year about how Havard results made relatively little noise. Not many posts here, not many on gradcafe and then they were done. And yes, they do make international calls. At least, used to, before the big endowment slump...
  3. You should not waste your time to get scholarships and the rejected them. Anyway, the Fulbright might be useful under some conditions, but is definitely not worth the process just for the sake of having it as one more line in a CV. I can't see it as landing you a job or anything. Just go to the movies instead.
  4. (Redundant, tried to delete but couldn't).
  5. I don't know if they have changed their procedures, but last year NYU had a very unusual way to contact admitted students. They called asking what you already had and if you were inclined to accept (mainly to really consider) an offer should you be offered one. Otherwise, they would go on and contact another interested student. It was a way to avoid that document that prevents them from requiring decisions before April 15. They also had some really late decisions. One friend had his application on hold up to mid-March, I think.
  6. They can only enforce that restriction in the US. Actually, it is the J1 visa regulation that does that for Fulbright.
  7. Officially, you would get a J1 visa with a two-year home residency requerement. The consulate or embassy would prevent you from having a more permanent visa after OPT(optional practical training). If they would buy that thing of being in a third country no one knows, except if he has been through it. Actually, different offices could have different interpretations. The problem is that once you are outside the American academic job market, it will be difficult to return.
  8. IMHO, if you have enough time, you should cancel the test and postpone it until you are consistently reaching more than 780 on the quant. If there`s room for improvement and you have time for it, you should definitely try it. Less than that score will make a damage to your application (I am not saying that it won`t be able to overcome that). Even financially, I think it would be wise, because retaking the test (if I remember correctly) is considerably more expensive than paying the cancelation fee. The verbal is fine. I don`t know how you have any idea about the analytical (you aren`t using old, not essay-based, tests, right?).Good luck anyway, whatever you choose to do.
  9. I have not received any. I went to Princeton, Yale and MIT and live overseas.
  10. Lucas and Stokey's "Recursive Methods in Economic Dynamics" has theory and applications. There are lots of lecture notes from courses based on it, like those from Werning's course: http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Economics/14-128Dynamic-Optimization---Economic-Applications--Recursive-Methods-Spring2003/CourseHome/index.htm. There are some good notes I used a while ago, but they do not have economic applications at http://www.ms.unimelb.edu.au/~s620311/pdf/NewMetric07.pdf
  11. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: International, Top in the country Undergrad GPA: 9.3/10.0 Type of Grad: MSc GRE: Q800, V550, A4.5 Math Courses:Undergrad: Calculus I-III, 2 semester Lin Algebra, Probability, Statistics, Real Analysis Grad: Real Analysis II, Measure Theory, Statistics Econ Courses: Lots of undergrad, core grad sequence in Micro, Macro and Econometrics Electives: Contract Theory, Finance, Advanced Theory Letters of Recommendation: All domestic based. Two tenured, two junior. All had PhDs from top 7. Research Experience: MSc thesis in progress, Undergrad thesis Research Interests: Theory, Public Finance SOP: Discussed my background and interests RESULTS: Acceptances: Chicago(Ext fund), Columbia($), MIT($, not immediately), Northwestern (waiver, Ext fund), NYU($), Princeton($), Penn($), Yale (lots of $) Rejections: Chicago GSB-Econ, Stanford GSB-Econ, Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford What would you have done differently? Not have applied for the Fulbright. Focused more on the GSBs, emphasizing theory or not have applied to those. Advice: Relax. Focus on every aspect of the app (LORs, courses, research exp). Now, I believe this forum overemphasizes math (but, still, you should have Real Analysis). Having recomendants that are known by the Adcom seems to be important.
  12. Someone should try to merge this thread with the other similar one(s).
  13. Today's Ashdown is really rundown, but they are building a new one that will probably be very good.
  14. Well, 100 Memorial Drive seemed a bit expense to me. http://www.dolben.com/100mem_ma.htm Also, except for the Eastgate, everything else seems a bit too far from both the T and the department. I will check how the shuttle works. Anyway, maybe I am exagerating.
  15. Hi, everyone. I wonder if I met you in the fly-outs. I believe I'll apply for on-campus housing, but I am still thinking about that.
