  1. In my experience, most people do realize that admission to PhD Finance programs is more difficult, and random, than admission to equivalently ranked PhD Econ programs. However, there are a select few who stick to the idea that PhD Econ admission is more difficult. In my experience, these people see the study of Economics as being more "noble" than that of Finance, as Finance is a relatively new subfield of Economics. At the end of the day, a student specializing in Financial Economics in an Econ PhD program will take similar courses and conduct similar research to a student in a Finance PhD program. However, the Finance student will likely have a more generous financial aid package than an Econ student at the same school, and the Finance student will likely make significantly more money on the academic job market.
  2. It seems to be a well known fact to almost everyone that PhD Finance will be much more difficult to gain admission to than equivalently ranked PhD Econ programs... If you're going to industry, then PhD Econ may be a better route, as a given applicant profile will probably get you into a higher ranked PhD Econ program.... IMO PhD Finance is a good idea if you're interested in academia, since Finance PhD's typically pull in a lot more $'s than Econ PhD's on the academic job market... in industry it doesn't matter so much... my 2 cents...
  3. I agree with teazer. For finance, you should have everything an Econ PhD applicant would have (including Real Analysis), and maybe even some more... ie. Differential Equations, and Stochastic Calculus if you want to be exceptionally well-prepared, although by no means is this absolutely necessary... For other disciplines, I would say Real Analysis is not required...
  4. In fact, it is exactly the opposite. Business Economics at Harvard is roughly equivalent to a Finance PhD, for which there is A LOT more competition than economics programs. The entering classes of just two of the Top 10 Econ PhD programs will probably be larger than the total number of admission offers at the entire set of Top 10 Finance PhD programs...
  5. Same question, but the two programs I want to know about are Duke Finance and Carnegie Mellon Financial Economics... what do you think?
  6. Hey everybody, I was accepted to Duke's Finance PhD a few weeks ago, and was officially able to see my acceptance letter on the ApplyYourself site last week. However, I still have not received my award letter in the mail. For those of you who were accepted to Duke's Econ program, how long did it take for you to receive your award letter? Thanks!
  7. No, no interview. Just an email saying I was in, and then a UPS package to my house the next day...
  8. I was accepted to Financial Economics last week (Feb 27), so more decisions should be coming soon...
  9. Thanks guys, but I already know that the GRE is fine for all schools in which I am interested. In fact, some of them have stated that the GMAT is acceptable for all disciplines in the Business school EXCEPT Finance. However, I have seen nothing about what you guys think of my chances... any thoughts?
  10. Thanks for the response. Two of my LOR's are strong recommendations from tenured faculty (one in math, one in finance). The other is a VERY strong recommendation, but the recommender is not a PhD themself. What do you think?
  11. Hey everyone, I am currently a college senior, interested in admission to a PhD program in Finance or Financial Economics. Please see my profile below, and post your opinion, or any comments, on my chances of admission to a TOP 10 program. Undergraduate Degrees: Bachelor's degree in Mathematics - specializing in Statistics (~3.9 GPA) Bachelor's degree in Business - specializing in Finance (~3.8 GPA) GRE: 800Q, 640V Relevant coursework: Calculus I-III, Linear Algebra I-II, Intermediate Macro and Microeconomics, Forecasting, Corporate Finance I-II, Advanced Corporate Finance, Financial & Managerial Accounting, Many Statistics courses including Mathematical Statistics (A+)... Real analysis this summer I have lots of experience TAing, but have not done research in the past - I am a research assistant in the coming semester, and will get some very good experience then. What do you guys think?
