    F1 denied !

Elisa, If I remember correctly you are from Romania, just like me. I have my interview on the 23rd. Part of my money (the part not covered by my TA) comes from a student loan that my american boyfriend co-signed so I fear my visa will be rejected on similar grounds as yours. However, if it wasn't for this, I think the other proofs I have would really be enough to show my strong ties to Romania: all my family is here, I have my own apartment, I have a good job that although I'll have to quit should be enough to show my ability to get by well here. What kind of questions did they ask in the interview? Thanks.
  2. Hello everyone, I just got my TSE score yesterday. I got 55. A 60 would have been great of course, but I am fairly happy with this score as well. Laura

    May Result

Hello, Sorry to hear about your result. You received it pretty fast. Where do you live? Laura
  4. Hi MS, Congratulations! When did you send your application to USC? Laura
  5. Congratulations to both of you! I see more and more people are starting to post in this forum....
  6. Congratulations! Which department did you apply to?
  7. I am doing well indeed...or maybe not so much now that I'm back at work after a week's vacation...and a great vacation it was :) Have a nice week!
  8. Congratulations Sundar! You must indeed feel pretty relieved now that you got into one of the programs you applied to. I'm sure you'll get financial aid too, as well as positive admission decisions from schools which sound more tempting to you. Best of luck! Laura
  9. How do they know exactly what you studied at university? Afterall, my Academic Record only says Math, without giving any explanation on the actual content of the respective course. Did you give them details about the content of the main classes you took as an undergrad? Indeed, I think most of the required math background is acquired during high school years in Romania. Of course, after almost 6 years, I don't remember that much of it. I'm sure I'll be able to catch up though. I just hope this won't make them reject my application.
  10. Hi Nicole, As you know, in Romania we can't really choose the classes we want to take. Therefore, as it is I think standard for Economics & Business schools in Romania, I took one year of math and another year of statistics. Did you take more classes than this? I hope this won't ruin my chances at getting in and that my GRE quant score will also help. I'm more and more worried about my chances of getting in, especially since I only applied to 4 schools. I hope I'll get some answer in March. Good luck with the other schools you applied to. Which one would be your first pick? Laura
  11. Congratulations Nicole! You must be feeling very relieved indeed. Hi Sundar, I also hope other Romanians will get some positive decision soon ;)

  13. Congratulations!!! When did you send your application?
  14. Congratulations! I don't know that much about living expenses in the US, but as far as I've heard California is the most expensive state.
  15. I applied to UCI Economics program. I emailed them a few weeks after I had sent my application (using the email address provided for the respective dept.: http://www.rgs.uci.edu/grad/contact/prgm_dir.htm ). They were actually pretty nice and checked if all my materials had reached them. I say you give it a try. It might take a few days before they answer, but not too long. Good luck. Laura
  16. Congratulations! This is great news indeed. How come they let you know so quickly? When was their deadline?
  17. Hi Prerna, Congratulations on your score! Where will you apply? Good luck! Laura
  18. The important thing is that your essay answers the topic you got. You can lie as much as you want. There's no way the people that grade you essay can know this, nor do they want to know I think. As long as the quality of the essay is good, you have nothing to worry about in my opinion.
  19. I took the GRE once, in october 2003 and I'm applying to graduate school now. In your case, probably the best would be to take a few practice tests for both GRE and GMAT and then decide which of the 2 suits you best. Good luck!

  21. Your scores are pretty low indeed. For an MSc in Economics, they will mainly look at your quant score, and 490 is indeed much lower than most of their minimum requirements, and the TOEFL can't compensate for this. A 510 verbal score, especially for a non-native speaker, is not too low. If you're also looking for some form of financial help, it is really a lost cause. You should probably try to prepare over a longer period of time, given that you also have work that I very well know takes a lot of time. Once you get home after a long working day, studying for the GRE really doesn't look too tempting. If you feel like waiting for a year is too long, maybe you can find some school that accepts students for the Spring semester as well.
  22. GMAT is indeed mainly for MBAs. However, GRE is not just for engineering. It's also for social sciences (including economics) and many others. My advice is to choose not based on the difficulty of the tests, but on what you plan to do with your scores. Once you decide on one of them, I'm sure you'll manage to prepare well enough for either of the 2 tests if you're keen on it. If you're planning to apply for graduate studies in engineering or economics for example, the GRE quantitative section will be much more important than the verbal anyway. Regarding the GRE verbal, from the vocabulary point of view, I think the antonyms and especially the analogies are the most difficult parts. The number of words you must memorize depends on how strong your vocabulary is at present. What kind of programs do you intend to apply to? Good luck! Laura
