  1. I am having some trouble pacing myself in the math component of powerprep. Its so much easier with english where u know u have around one minute for one question. Could anyone tell me what strategy to follow for pacing yourself in the math component? Are we aiming at milestones here or pacing yourself question by question? Many thanks in advance. And btw Madhur (if ur reading this) i did try calling you twice at the number u gave me (your office number), but got the answering machine each time. I would appreciate it if u could give me your mobile number.
  2. 5.Gust : Wind :: (a) rapids : river (b) blizzard : snowstorm © cloudburst : rainfall (d) mist : fog (e) surf : sea Shovik is absolutely correct in this bridge ..Why do you find it weak ? ---------- Hi Madhur, Shovik had given the following bridge for above analogy: X is a sudden and unexpected occurence of Y " But is gust really a sudden and unexpected occurence of wind? Also, how about giving the other analogies a shot?
  3. (Note: A few analogies in what follows have been answered before on this forum, but am posting them again since i found the bridges suggested to be a little vague.) Please provide the bridge for the following: 1. Prune : Hedge :: (a) shuck : corn (b) trim : hair © cut : bouquet (d) reap : crop (e) shave : mustache Answer: -------------------- 2. Damp : Vibration :: (a) drench : moisture (b) concentrate: extraction © boil : liquid (d) seal : perforation (e) stanch : flow Answer: -------------- 3. Abraded : Friction :: (a) refined : distillate (b) anodized : metal © diluted : gas (d) strengthened : pressure (e) vaporized : heat Answer: ---------- 4. Quarry : Stone :: (a) fell : timber (b) dredge : canal © assay : gold (d) bale : hay (e) mold : clay Answer: ------------ 5. Centrifuge : Separate :: (a) thermometer : calibrate (b) statue : chisel © floodgate : overflow (d) colander : drain (e) television : transmit Answer: Note : why is the answer not (a)? ------------------------- 6. Volatile : Temper :: (a) prominent : notoriety (b) ready : wit © catastrophic : disaster (d) gentle : heart (e) expressive : song Answer: -------------- 7. Moralistic : Principled :: (a) simplistic : unsophisticated (b) pedantic : learned © positivistic : emperical (d) dogmatic : prejudiced (e) fantastic : imaginative Answer: Note : why not (d)? ---------------- 8. waft : plummet :: (a) skim : glide (b) dream: captivate © toss : catch (d) flail : assault (e) meander : dash Answer: ------------- 9. Quaff : Sip :: (a) bolt : run (b) punch : hit © gnaw : nibble (d) trudge : plod (e) stride : mince Answer: Note: In answer to Q. 12, Shovik writes (in an earlier post): "A degree question To quaff is to drink like a sponge. To stride means to take long steps" I didn't get this. Quaff means to take big sips? (dictionary meaning says quaff means to drink with relish). But what is the relationship of stride and mince then? ---------------- 13.Firm : Ironclad :: (a) bruised : broken (b) polished : shining © smart : brilliant (d) hard : stiff (e) jovial : merry Answer: --------- 14. Mimicry : Camouflage:: (a) photosynthesis : pollination (b) territoriality : migration © hibernation : generation (d) mutation : variation (e) digestion : rumination Answer: Note : In response to above, Shovik writes: "Camoflauge is to mimic the environ in order to protect oneself. Variation is to mutate. Y is a form of X" The bridge seems sort of awkward to me. ---------------------- 15.Gust : Wind :: (a) rapids : river (b) blizzard : snowstorm © cloudburst : rainfall (d) mist : fog (e) surf : sea Answer: Note : In response to above question, Shovik writes: "X is a sudden and unexpected occurence of Y " this seems like a very weak bridge to me ------------------------
