hey softbabu Looks like you need some help. Some friendly advice..finish the Barron's wordlist.And then again. And then again..and again.If you know someone whos taking CAT classes, ask him what they told him about RC. Read editorials in newspapers, and then try and summarize them. For Maths, honestly, just cut out the careless errors. Id suggest you enroll in some sort of GRE coaching..IMS is not bad. DO NOT give tests until two weeks before your GRE/

hey, i meant your major..sorry.didnt see that youd already said it was chemical engg. im curious, is that your gpa on a 10-point scale or is it a conversion from some other scale? do you plan to pay for the program too? for the GRE I studied sporadically for about 2 months.I did the Barron's wordlist thrice, and I did it well.Pay attention to suffixes and prefixes as they help you guess unknown words.In my experience, only the practice scores on PowerPrep are reliable, and the standard of questions too.I didnt do anything for Math. Do you go to college in Bombay?

Hey savvy GRE kickboxer is right, Maths anxiety could be a problem.Im sure youre not actually bad at Mathematics.The trick is to try and relate to the subject material. My score(and Im sure that of several others) was an 800.Please feel free to mail me/post on this thread with absolutely any doubts that you may have about specific topics.Perhaps I, and others, can suggest some ways in which you can get the easier questions right and get a 350. There are also some excellent posts in 'GRE Maths' that you might want to check out. P.S. Honestly, Im not tying to be condescending.Id really like to help, especially as I too had Maths anxiety until 8th grade when I finally learnt how to relax. Also, if you do go to a tutor, please do choose one who emphasises on problem-solving and not drilling concepts into your head.As I understand it, your only goal is to get a 350 and be done with Maths for ever.No sense in wasting time then.

I have a stupid question... Some colleges in the program Im looking to apply for have a December 15 admission deadline. Im in my senior year and expect my 7th semester grades to be out by the 4th or 5th of December. Therefore there is no way I can get the official transcripts from my college and send them across to the university Im applying to, within the deadline. Im actually planning to study pretty hard in the next semester, and get good grades. Therefore, given my grades are pretty decent, is there any way the admissions committee will agree to accept my 7th semester transcripts at a later date and consider them a part of my application? Am I allowed to mention any grades in my application which are not backed up by transc

hey ashfuel i am also looking to apply for an MSFE program in 2008. other good colleges are cornell, nyu, stanford, u toronto, chicago and michigan-ann arbor. whats your background like(college/gpa/major/work ex.)? i too am changing majors...currently majoring in materials science and engineering.unfortunately none of these programs offer financial aid. im very confused about what schools to apply to, and need all the help i can get!

thanks ncy111 for the help. With Indians providing the most number of foreign students to US universities, I am sure admissions offices in the US know about the IITs. In any case, imagine a student with a 3.5 GPA from MIT vis a vis a 4.0 GPA from, say, Rutgers.Which is better?

hi geograd from what i know, MIT doesnt even ask for GRE scores, while its last in the priority of top schools like Stanford(its used as a sort of elimination tool, thats all).At the PhD level, it depends on which school matches your interests.Funding should also play a part in your considerations.Try getting in touch with any faculty members who have similar interests, and see if theyre willing to take you on board,or get them to evaluate your application(they often do)..Finally, its good to aim high, but always remember to keep a couple of safety schools(my tuppence of useless advice)! cheers gourav

hi gabe are you willing to pay the full tuition fee? in that case, id say youve judged the lineup just about right.Youre gpa in CS isnt that great though.Have you considered working for a couple of years before doing an MS to add some meat to your application? hey techno it depends on what universities youre looking at, what kind of recos you have and what kind of work experience you have. GRE is basically used for eliminating candidates, and in any case, since you have a good quant score, I dont think you need to retake the GRE.Schools mostly only look for really good quant scores for an MS, and a fair VA score(570 should be okay). However, since there may be other candidates with better overall scores, Id suggest(and Im sure youre already trying) doing the very best you can with the SOP and the letters of recommendation. cheers

It really depends on what college you graduated from, and how you calculated that GPA.For instance, in the IITs , a straight conversion from a 10-point scale to a 4-point scale always looks a little unimpressive, but do es not reflect what our actual class position is.It would be better to present the GPA in its original format and clarify it in relative terms.Also, im assuming since you have been working(in this field?) you have some published papers/relevant experience.This will count in your favour against a fresh graduate's application. cheers p.s.
