  1. I went to UC Davis for my first two years of undergrad and participated in the DHC for my freshman year (2005-2006). When I did it, I wasn't too impressed--I quit after that first year. But from what I hear, Integrated Studies is much better; at least more prestigious. You get in based off your SAT scores, HS GPA, etc. These are like the "probably should have gone to a better college" students. Or, at least that's the way I saw them. But, at least for DHC, you have to take two discussion type classes and one seminar throughout the year. The weird course descriptions you are talking about are probably the seminars. There, you pretty much have a topic (sometimes about popstars and such), and you work on a presentation about that topic that will be given at a convocation toward the end of that particular quarter. The seminar group is made up of like 15 or so people, with a professor that supervises. The discussions, I felt, were actually the best part of DHC. I took the math 21 series discussions and it mainly consisted of the professor giving us "harder" calculus questions, the students doing them, then discussing it with the class. It's actually really nice in terms of interacting with the professor. But other than that, I felt like DHC was a waste of units (particularly the seminar) I could be using for more interesting classes. I know a lot of other people that felt the same way, and who planned on quitting too, but most people stayed in the program. But DHC is improving--haha, I still get the e-mails of some of the things they're doing to improve. One thing they've recently added that is really impressive (and if you're going to be a freshman is really nice) is priority registration for classes. And getting all the good teachers is probably the best thing you could do for your GPA :D
  2. I'm actually also doing research for the ARE department at my school, so this would just be a little something extra--possibly something fun and interesting? So hopefully I won't send adcoms the wrong idea about my intellectual pursuits! I've also recently been considering applying to some B-schools (for ph.d) in marketing; I figure a background in experimental design and psychology couldn't hurt? Then again, I could be completely wrooooong.:(
  3. Thanks! Yeah, I'm taking a Psych class for a general education requirement, and it is really interesting, so I thought it might be a good idea into considering RAing for one of the many many openings. I'm currently trying to gain the courage to ask an econ professor if he needs any research assistance... haha, and wanted alternative options
  4. Hey all, I was just wondering if being a research assistant in a field other than economics, such as psychology or political science, would be helpful (either in admissions or in the long run). It seems like the psych department at my school offers A BILLION opportunities for research, but the econ department is more limited (or at least I'm having a tough time finding them).
  5. Mmmm... I've been looking into UCLA Anderson (as a REACH!), USC Marshall, and UC Irvine Merage... sooooo, pretty much staying in CA, haha. I was thinking of studying either Marketing, or some type of Information and Operations Management. I've been really interested in I.O. and Labor Econ, so I'm figuring these are the closest? I haven't really looked TOO MUCH into anything... most of my grad school research has been directed at econ departments.
  6. I'm applying Fall '09 too! I've actually had an account on TM for a while, because I WAS going to apply for Fall '08, but then decided to transfer undergrad schools. So I have to do ALL my major requirements for an econ degree almost all over again. (But more time for math classes!) So, yeah. Sorry if I've been "lurking." It recently just hit me HOW CLOSE grad school applications actually are. So, I'm back, hoping to be a full contributor this time around! Anyways, like I said, I pretty much have 4 more econ classes in the semester system just to graduate (that's all I needed last year at my old college, but in the quarter system!), and real analysis (which I'll be taking this summer.) Like most of you, I have like 20 schools I want to apply to--most in the 20-70 range... and some business ph.d, and ARE programs. Maybe some in the top 20 if I can boost my profile in the next Woo! Good luck to all of us '09ers! (It's never too early) And, of course, good luck to the '08ers!
  7. Hey everybody, I normally don't do this, but I really could use some advice on where to apply for graduate school! My profile isn't very strong mainly because I have just recently decided that grad school is something I want to do. So evaluate, please! :D School: UC Davis (I didn't want to leave it too ambiguous...) GRE: 770Q, 450V, 4.5AWA (Probably taking it again) Undergrad GPA: 3.82, Econ: 3.81, Math: 3.82 Econ classes: Intermediate Micro (B), Intermediate Macro (A), Topics in Macro (A), International Macro (A), International Micro (A-), Industrial Organization (A+), Analysis of Economic Data [kind of an intro to econometrics, but not econometrics] (A+) Econ classes planned to take this year: Econometrics, Game Theory Math classes: Calc I (A+), Calc II (A), Calc III (A), Vector calc (A+), Linear Algebra (A-), Differential Equations (A+), Advanced Calculus (B+) Stat classes: Intro (AP 5), Regression Analysis (A-), Probability theory (Planned) Research Experience: Not much, except for a Senior Honors Thesis :/ Trying to get some this upcoming quarter... Interests: Macro, IO Letters of Recommendation: One strong, two decent. All econ. Comments: Ugh, I know that my GRE scores are pretty low (especially the verbal - I keep hearing different things about it's weight in admissions, so I'm not sure what to actually think :/), but that's because it was a little last minute when I decided to take it... I DO plan on taking it again soon. Sorry if I sound a little inexperienced (uh... stupid?) regarding this grad school stuff. It's a little new to me. Again, I haven't didn't really decide until recently, so I'm not really sure WHERE to apply based on my profile. :/ I appreciate the help everybody! Thanks! :D:D:D
