  2. c'mon, don't die, pls!!! :-) what do u say about a QUIZ on capitals?! :D I'l start with: Tallin is the capital of... [answer and post a new query! no google, plsssssss! you'r smarter than that :P] cheers, Cris
  3. Hi, guys! Can't find a reliable convertor online...How would you translate a 1.86 grade from Germany into the American grading system? It's a five point grading scale, grades from 1 to 5 with an 0.3 increment, where: 1 – 1.50 = very good, 1.51 – 2.50 = good, 2.51 - 3.50 = satisfactory, 3.51 – 4.00 = sufficient, below 4.00 = fail. Check Explanation of the German examination types and grading system for more details... I know in the states 4 is the highest one, which it the lowest one with which you still pass?! Looking foward to your input! Cheers, Cristina
  4. Hi Sanjay, Super score you have there! :) I just want to break the 1400 barrier: more like 800Q and 600V... Was wondering if you got the results for AWA. I've started today to practice the Issue Argument, submitted my very first attempt to ScoreItNow and got a 5!!! I find it... well, let's say, unexpected!!! :D Was your real score consistent with the ScoreItNow score??? Good luck with your application! All the best, Cristina

  7. My very first attempt!!! Issue topic: In our time, specialists of all kinds are highly overrated. We need more generalists-people who can provide broad perspectives. --- In the contemporaneous society the issue generalists vs. specialists have become a controversial one. On the one hand, persons with a broad perspective and interdisciplinary knowledge are essential to success and innovation. On the other hand, there is a great demand for over-specialized personnel: from technology to education, from health care to business administration, specialists get usually very well paid jobs. However, in the final analysis, I believe that nowadays we need to produce more generalists in order to secure future development. To start with: the degrees offered by the higher education systems were always a true mirror of the current needs on the job market. There is a myriad of new Master and Ph.D. programs which now provide insights in more than one traditional domain. Take for example bioinformatics - the prospective students are expected to prove expertise in at least one of the following: informatics, biology, mathematics, physics and show great interest in the others. During the programs they will gain knowledge and skills that will allow them later to successfully cover a much broader area of expertise than before. The highly specialised individuals in each of the above mentioned disciplines are of course indispensable, but without persons who can take the right decisions (like future research topics or application areas) they can not be efficiently used. Of course, I am not pleading here for another Aristotle or Euler, I just want to emphasize that idea that generalists are needed and should be appreciated. Proportional to the growth in the amount of information pertaining to a certain domain, we witness as the areas of expertise become smaller and overly specialized, leading to a serious lack of coherence and cohesion. Without a competent person to look over and coordinate the interchange paths between the disparate modules (read departments, institutes, teams, etc.) the overall process (read business, research, construction of a building, etc.) will suffer grave flaws. Another reason for my belief is the frustration many people working in a team encounter. It is triggered by lack of communication and understanding between the team members. I think that the common denominator, the solution to the problem, is a generalist team leader. He can both relate to each and every member, but still keep the bigger picture in mind. To conclude, I strongly support the claim for more generalists in our society. People with a broader perspective are indispensable for future development of the human race. Even if specialists are important, generalists are even more important! Any suggestions are welcomed. 10x!
  8. happy that u are content with the result! good luck with the applications! :-)
  9. How long do you have to wait for the results from ScoreItNow? thanks, Cristina
  10. thanks, but no thanks! haven't u heard of the proverbial "talent" of french ppl for foreign languages? :) and I don't speak french! now seriously, I've already studied in Germany and Sweden and know the level and what to expect... and according to http://www.arwu.org/rank/2004/Top%20100%20European%20Universities.htm there aren't that many good french schools either... I'm actually looking for a good program in COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE and/or BIOINFORMATICS... tips, anyone?!
  11. Hi! This question has been puzzling me for two days already... Will I have to select the universities right after I finish the exam (at the test center)? Or after I get the official results home? How many universities can I include?! I know that AFTERWARDS (reference point sought-after...) it costs 15$/university. 10x a lot, Cristina
  12. Hi! Was wondering if anybody applies/ have applied to these universities (MASTER Computer Science in particular): EPFL and ETH (Switzerland) TU Munich, FU Berlin, RWTH Aachen (Germany) TU Delf, U Amsterdam (Holland) KTH Stockholm (Sweden) There are lots of advices online and tones of student folklore about the American universities but scarcely any about the European ones. I don't plan to leave the old continent... so any information would be very helpful: - what would be a good GRE score for these universities? - what would be a good GPA (or let's say average grade in ECTS system)? - what style should one adopt in the motivation letter? - how difficult is to get a financial aid/ scholarship? Hope to get some input! :) Yours, Cristina
  13. Hi, everybody! My name is Cristina and I'll be sitting the GRE General Test on the 27. November. I'm not a native speaker, but thought of myself as being quite good at foreign languages (I'm studing CS in Germany, German not being my mothertongue either - I'm from Romania). Yeah, I came to think differently after doing the first test in PowerPrep (the software from the ETS webpage):500 Verbal & 800 Quantative. Didn't do the writing tasks yet... For the real thing I would aime at, let's say: 600 Verbal and 800 Quantative. I'm quite aware that the stress, unknown environment, tiredness will diminish my general performance. I had been reading the posts about the prep material and I'd have some questions: - what is this barrons wordlist?!? Is the one here: Barron's GRE word list - I Where could I get a more lisible version? The shorter version would be the one here: Barron's 800 High-Frequency GRE Words ?! Or these are not the real thing... I'm confused... - I am ordering now on Amazon: Cracking the GRE 2008 with DVD-ROM by Princeton Review GRE Exam Vocabulary Flashcards by Kaplan Arco Words for Smart Test Takers What else is a MUST-have? I am pretty stressed about the whole thing... Have some important projects going on at the university right now and there is not that much time to invest in the preparation... but the clock is ticking! One thing to add (but I will also do another post with a corresponding title): won't be applying in the states, but to some universities in Germany, Switzerland and Holland. Guess the Verbal won't be THAT important... Looking forward to your answers, Cristina
