  1. Hi guys, I find Sentence completion to be particularly difficult than anything else. Is there any online resource or specific books or material exclusively for SC. Please let me know. Thanks in advance! Monica
  2. Hi guys, Somehow I think c (deploring;optimistically) should be the answer for first question. eephdwannabe, they can't state it without doubt, because there is no solid evidence. I think they are just being optimistic about it. What do you think? I go with dave on other two questions. 2d 3b thankyou. Monica
  3. Hi Ketan, Congrats on your success. Please let us know about your GRE score and other information regarding admission. Thanks in advance. Monica
  4. Hello friends, I have a question. If I take up PhD, I may complete it in 6-7 years. On the other hand, say I do my MS(2 years) and then proceed to apply for PhD, does it take two more years apart from for my 6 years for PhD? Hope my question isn't confusing and you understand what I mean! Monica
  5. Hi Sunxcat, I read in previous posts that one of our TestMagicianers have got into UCI without aid. So, I just wanted to know whether Iam still in the race. Monica
  6. hi there, Did you apply online or through mail. You can check out the application status online for UCLA if you applied online. Monica.
  7. Hey guys, did anyone of you receive accept or reject info from UCR? did anyone receive reject letter from UCI? Monica
  8. Hey congrats! That';s a great score and wonderful profile. You definitely deserved it. Are you an international applicant or US resident? MOnica
  9. Hi, Iam not sure about your observation. I have many international students on the student list in UC schools. Especially UCR. But I think UC schools are bit expensive to international students when compared to the rest I think. Monica
  10. Congrats MS! I just have a doubt. Is it university of southern Columbia or southern california? Monica
  11. Hi CsQuest I have also applied for the same universities. Are you an international applicant? I received an e-mail from UCI stating that they have received my application and they would intimate me if and only if any of the documents is missing. So I think you can stay cool. Don't worry too much about it. My GRE score is q730 v600 a 5.0. What is your score? Do you have any idea about my chances in UCR, UCLA and UCI. Thanks. Monica
  12. Hi archana, Congrats on your score. Why are so particular about UC? Any special reasons? Monica
  13. Hi guys, Read the following points for a general idea on interpreting statistics. A) Biased data Things to think about include: i) Are the data that the relationship is based upon a representative (i.e., unbiased) selection of all the possible individuals that could have been sampled? E.g., think about the paradox of the falling cats. ii) Could the researchers have been verified the accuracy of their data by some independent means? E.g., survey respondents might give false information. B) Lying with averages and the effects of extreme data points i) When “averages” are reported do you always know what is being discussed? ii) Note that there are three different types of “average”: the mean (arithmetic average), median (middle value in a distribution), and mode (most commonly occurring value). iii) These three numbers can be very different, and so the “average” value of something may not be typical. E.g., the average size of tax breaks that politicians talk about don’t necessarily tell you anything about what most people will actually get. C) Spurious correlations i) Just because two things are correlated with each other (i.e., as one changes, so does the other in some systematic way), does not mean that one is actually affecting the other. ii) Lots of examples of this. Here is one: people who have an annual physical live for longer than those that don’t, yet most tests performed in physicals have no detectable health benefits. D) Inappropriate comparisons i) It is easy to mislead people by using different types of statistics in a comparison. ii) E.g., this quote is supposed to make you believe that dolphins living in captivity die at a higher rate than they would in the wild: "Calculations taken from the study showed that on average the expected life span of a bottle-nosed dolphin in captivity could be as little as 14 years, while in the wild the dolphin could live twenty to twenty-nine years." iii) Did you spot the problem? Read it again. Now, did you notice that the statement compares an average to a maximum? This statement tells us absolutely nothing useful and is clearly intended to mislead you. E) Extrapolation beyond the data i) When you look at graphs, pay attention to whether the line through points goes beyond the range of values spanned by the points. If any assertions are made about values outside of the data range, you probably shouldn’t put too much faith in them. Hope it helps! Monica
  14. Hi vasu, ALL THE BEST!. I'm sure your last minute preparation will definitely help. Monica
  15. hi yevgeny, The test section, does it appear mandatorily for everyone or only for a few? In such a case our test may be for more than 2-1/2 hrs right! Monica
  16. Hi DKG5, Congrats great score. Any advice for quantitative section? Did you go thro all of barrons 50 word list? Monica
  17. Hi Rohit, congrats. Which colleges are you planning to apply? How abt the quantitative. How was data interpretation questions? Was there any normal distribution questions? Thanks in advance. Monica
  18. Do anyone know how to find std dev for this kind of problems? x 17 18 19 20 21 22 f 2 7 19 9 2 0 1 Thanks, Monica
  19. Iam sorry, I think that was a problem with the text editor. it has removed the space characters and made it clumsy. Since it is percentage we assume the number 100. fact 1 : motorist= 100 got tickets= 10 fact 2 : speeding motorist =100 did not get tickets =20 Therefore who got tickets =80 putting ratios together (with common ratio : got tickets) motorist =100x8=800 got tickets= 80 speeding motorist= 100 so answer is (no of speeding motorist/no of motorist)x100 (100/800)x100 =12.5(ans)
  20. Hai doodle, Congrats on your success. Is it true that nowadays there are more of probability and statistics question in GRE? Iam kind of worried because Iam not good at std. dev other than for the basic concepts. How abt TestMagic math questions. I feel some of them are too hard to crack and too much for GRE. What do you think? Awaiting your advice. Monica.
  21. Hi sanjana, I think we can solve it like this... fact 1 : motorist got tickets 100 10 fact 2 : speeding motorist did not get tickets got tickets 100 20 80 putting ratios together (with common ratio : got tickets) motorist got tickets speeding motorist 100x8 80 100 so answer is (no of speeding motorist/no of motorist)x100 (100/800)x100 =12.5(ans) I am not sure whether you understood. I don't know how to explain. Monica
  22. Hi vknittala I wonder why you worry abt zero being a positive integer. for the number to be odd my unit digit should be 1,3,5, 7 or 9. Given the condition without digit 5, hundredth place 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9 i.e. 8 tenth place 0 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 i.e. 9 unit's place 1 3 7 9 so answer is 8x9x4=288 Monica
  23. Hey murboy, I think it is hightime for you decide about the schools, that too now you know your GRE score and you know your position in universities that only ask for subject GRE. You know ultimately, we could apply only to 6-8 universities. Better shortlist the universities right now. This is the general advice. Choose few schools in top rank, few in mid range and atleast one, where you can be sure to get admission, even in the worst case. I think it is ok to mention the exam date. Infact I'm writing my GRE only on Dec 13th. So, no problem. Relax and do well. Hey murboy, I would like to know your visa status, are you a green card holder. You can also write to my e-mail id monicajal@yahoo.com. Monica
  24. Hi murboy, I live in Southern California, I'm also planning to apply for USC. Are you not applying for UCLA. I think it is better you try to mail or meet some professors in one or two universities abt your qualification. As you know, if the professor is convinced abt your interest, your admission process may be easier. Since you are here in california, you can take advantage of that. All the best. Monica
  25. Hi Rk, Congrats on your great score. Did you read all the 53 word list of Barrons? Kind of confusing it is. How long had you been preparing for GRE? Thanks, Monica
