  1. Oh I'm very sorry for posting a bawdy poem here. I don't understand the content before. I don't know it has a sexual innuendo. I am just looking for poems to practice my English and came across this poem. I'm terribly sorry.
  2. Hi, I have a question about this poem. Can you explain the first two lines for me? I don't understand. I thought 'thou' and 'thy' are synonyms, so what does "thou hast thy 'Will' " mean? Can you rephrase the first two lines for me? What about the next two lines? Thanks.
  3. I want to ask you some more questions. What's 'a philosophical flourish Cato'? I think 'throws' must be 'throwing', because the sentence begins with 'with'. Is that right? What does the author mean by 'pistol and ball'? What does 'but knew' mean? Does 'but' here mean 'only'?
  4. Yeah, I think it's 'over' because 'over' makes sense. Thank you. Can you explain what does "Nay Overflowing Hell" mean? What's 'Nay'? What does 'for thine Elect' mean? What is 'our Veans'? What does the 12th line mean?
  5. Can you help me with the second stanza? What's "O're"?
  6. Thanks Michael, Now I understood the first stanza. Can you check my understanding of the next two lines? Paraphrase: What has your Godhead, as if not satisfied, married our Manhood, and made it [the Godhead] its [the Manhood] Bride? Is that correct?
  7. What Love is this of thine, that Cannot bee In thine Infinity, O Lord, Confinde, Unless it in thy very Person see, Infinity, and Finity Conjoyn'd? What hath thy Godhead, as not satisfide Marri'de our Manhood, making it its Bride? Oh, Matchless Love! filling Heaven to the brim! O're running it: all running o're beside This World! Nay Overflowing Hell; wherein For thine Elect, there rose a mighty Tide! That there our Veans might through thy Person bleed, To quench those flames, that else would on us feed. Oh! that thy Love might overflow my Heart! To fire the same with Love: for Love I would. But oh! my streight'ned Breast! my Lifeless Sparke! My Fireless Flame! What Chilly Love, and Cold? In measure small! In Manner Chilly! See. Lord blow the Coal: Thy Love Enflame in mee. Can you explain the first four lines of this poem? I have no idea.
  8. What is "growing grim about the mouth"? What is "in my soul"? What does the author mean by saying "pausing before the coffin warehouses ...."? What does "hypos" mean? What is "knocking people's hats off"? What is "account it high time"? Thanks a lot and happy new year.
