  1. Hi everyone! Thanks for the wishes. I agree! My intellect couldn't have skyrocketed in a month! I identified pacing as an issue after the first test and made sure that I don't repeat the same mistake. I didn't try to do anything too different- just concentrated on the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. I trried to solve as many DS, PS and SC problems as I could and a few RCs on the day before the test. Did not do much for CR because I was pretty confident about it. I couldn't devote a lot of time for test preparation because of work, but I made sure I spent at least a couple of hours everyday. Thanks a lot Anita :o ! Baja, as I said earlier- my prep was pretty much the same. I would even say that I studied a little less the second time around. Maybe that helped me concentrate better! I used only the PR and [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] for preparation. I abandoned the PR book a long time back- took just one test off their CD. I was obsessed with the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and of course, TestMagic. I kept visiting the site every often to read problems, solutions and test experiences- that helped lots. I didn't go prepared to shoot down the difficult questions. Instead, I made sure I wouldn't mess up the sitters- work problems, percentages, mixtures, direct application of the P&C formulae, etc. (Erin once remarked on this site that to get to the difficult questions, we have to get through the easy questions first!) I didn't ace the Quant section, but got the easier questions correct, paced myself better through the section and improved my Quant score. Hi Mundra- first of all good luck with your preparation. I haven't used Kaplan at all. The [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] was my companion throughout the time I spent preparing for the GMAT. I suggest that you try and solve as many problems as you can from the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] because you have just a week left. I am on a job too and found it tough juggling work and test prep, but things worked out reasonably well for me. You can do it too, buddy!. Many of the actual GMAT questions I faced were quite similar to those in the book. You could try solving some practice questions from the Poweprep CD (and a test if you can find the time- I couldn't find time to do a full test, so I did the practice questions and timed myself). Hope I have been of some help to all of you. Cheers, ~Ketu
  2. Hi everyone, I retook the GMAT today after a disastrous 590 last month [Recounted the disaster here: http://www.TestMagic.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9736] and am pleased to report a score of 700 today. The best thing I did this time was making 'educated' guesses. I missed answering five questions in the Quant section last time. So, today I made a conscious effort to keep moving and not get stuck on any question. When I felt that I was lagging behind time, I quickly resorted to elimination techniques, etc to make a guess and move on. Review of the test: The Quant section was very, very (VERY) similar to the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. I had one Probability question and one P&C question. They were not too difficult- I could solve them in two/three steps. Verbal was a lot of fun! I enjoyed solving the questions- all of them were very similar to the ones in the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. I got three RCs and one boldface question. My Quant percentile is a little low- probably because everyone around me seems to score in the high 40s, but I have no plans to retake (yet!). I'm perfectly fine with my Verbal score. A jump from 590 to 700 in one month has given me a lot of satisfaction. Thank you Testmagic and best of luck to everyone attempting the GMAT! ~Ketu
  3. Actual GMAT : First attempt: 590 (Q38, V34) Second attempt: 700 (Q44, V41) -- PP1 (1 month before the test) : 640 (Q42 V35) Paper test 28 (1 week before the test) : 660 (Q41 V40) PP1 (repeat) (3 days before the test) : 690 (Q44 V41) Paper test 32 (2 days before the test) : 710 (Q44 V43) PP2 (1 day before the test) : 710 (Q48 V40) -- I had just begun working on the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] when I attempted PP1. By the time I attempted PP1 a second time and PP2, I was halfway through all the sections except RC. The 590 on my (first) actual GMAT was a shocker! I solved a lot more questions from the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] before my second attempt. I also did a few practice problems from the Powerprep tests to get a feel of the computer testing environment.
  4. Hi everyone, I just finished my first GMAT, and as the score implies, it was a disastrous attempt! The Quant section was pretty tough- nothing weird though. Every question seemed to take more time to solve than usual, and I fell short by five questions in the end. Verbal has always been my strong point, so I hoped to make that count. The difficulty level seemed to be on par with that of the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and PP but I ended up with a really pathetic score. In fact, I was quite confident about my Verbal section answers during the test. Needless to say, I was in a state of shock after I saw the 590 and V34 on screen (I sorta expected to mess up Quant because I fell short by a few questions). The Quant threw up just one P&C question- a direct application of the combination formula- I think that was among the first ten questions I got ( I wouldn't know if I got it right though cos I'm in no position to trust my own evaluation on Quant!!). Everything else seemed familiar [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]-style questions, except that I took more time to come up with an answer. Verbal seemed pretty straightforward to me- three RCs, around 10-12 CRs and some very simple SC questions. I'm quite sure that I got all the SCs correct- all of them were TestMagic solvable! I lost focus a bit during two of the three RCs, so I'm guessing I messed up there. Looking at my Verbal score, I'd say I messed up with almost all the CR questions!! I must have got hardly five questions wrong out of a 100 on the OG! I've been preparing myself for a couple of months- most of my preparation revolved around PR, the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and TestMagic. My practice test scores were as follows: PP1 (1 month before the test): 640 Paper test 28 (1 week before the test): 660 PP1 (again- 3 days before the test) : 690 Paper test 32 (2 days before the test) : 710 PP2 (1 day before the test) : 710 I need to improve my pacing in Quant and practice a lot LOT more to get to my target (700+), but I'm clueless about what to do for my Verbals. I've done almost all the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and want to follow Erin's advice about actually going through ALL of it, but I really can't fathom why my score ended up SO low. I've never ever done so bad during my prep phase! Has someone been through a similar situation? I desperately need some motivation here- the 590 is no indication of my ability to crack this test (It smarts when I realise that I haven't even crossed the 600 mark!). I've already missed deadlines to a few of my target universities, and have to do really well to erase this mess off my record. Thanks for everything guys... I would have loved to report a successful attempt today, but I guess that'll have to wait!
  5. Can someone clarify this? How does ETS calculate the percentile for a particular test?
  6. Excellent! I owe you one, Sujayath!
  7. Oops! I made a typo- it's 3^50 and not 350. I'll edit the original post as well. Thanks for trying to help me out Scheel; I have a problem figuring out the divisibility of 100! (Yes, I do mean 100 factorial). Any clues?
  8. What is the least number that should be multiplied to 100! to make it perfectly divisible by 3^50? (1) 144 (2) 72 (3) 108 (4) 216 The correct answer is (2) 72 Can someone show the way to solve this?
  9. Hi ambreenjava, This is how I solved the problem- the distance between the two points would be 3.4+5.2 = 8.6. The halfway mark would be at 8.6/2 = 4.3 from either end. Which means the point is at -3.4+4.3 or 5.2-4.3 = 0.9 on the number line. Hope this helps.
  10. Another important lesson learned at Testmagic! I think I'll go the whole hog and read the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] through- at least as much as I can (I guess I can complete the Quant portion and I'm already through half the SC questions). The point about not being able to get to the toughies without breezing through the 'easy' questions is something I should be taking seriously. I am prone to making a lot of silly mistakes. Thank you again, Erin!
  11. Thank you Erin! I have gone through the PR guide already.. sped through it actually. I have been working on the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] for a couple of weeks- my immediate plan is to do the last 100 questions in each section (From the posts I read at Testmagic, I believe those are the toughest ones to crack) over and over again :) I hope to do well, and will keep you folks updated on my progress. Thanks for the advice and motivation!
  12. Thanks for the sound advice! I just took a PP test and scored 640(Q42, V35). I realized that I need to spend some more time on Quant learn to be a lot more patient during RC! I would probably lose focus if I hadn't taken this test. I hope to practise a lot more and get a shot at one of the Paper tests in the next couple of days. I'm aiming for a 700.. how long (and winding!) is the road from a 640 to a 700? I'm all game for putting in the extra effort. Any tips on boosting my Verbal scores to a 40+ level?
  13. If xy = 8, y = 8/x. So for y to be an integer, x could be 1,2,4 or 8. How can (A) alone be sufficient? Please can someone explain?
  14. Thanks for pointing that out Sujayath! We can remove 'power' from this sentence and correctly rewrite it as "The software.. will not only.. but also have versatility".
  15. Thank you Sujayath! That was very helpful. I'll make sure I scan the FAQ more often now!
