    Quant Score

I'm in at Emory with a 57% quant (39) (44 Verbal (98%)) Overall was 680 I've heard for the top 10 or 5 it's recommended that you score in the 80% or higher in Q.
  2. Congrats on your score! Probably the first and last time someone dedicates their GMAT to Eminem though! lol!
  3. 9r4life Do not spend too much time on prob/perms/combs! They are not a major component of the GMAT like some of the other concepts. And from what I've read, the problems are not difficult if they show up. I had one combination problem on my test. That said, this forum is one of the best resources I've found for prob and such. Lots of questions in the problem solving forum. PR had some decent probability problems, and I also worked extra help with my PR instructor doing a few of them. I think your study plan is sound and you should do very well! Good luck!
  4. Ranav Congrats on getting a good score. What is in your opinion some useful tips for the verbal section. Any tips on identifying the correct answers for CR - and on the RC do you skim the passage the first time or just reado it properly once. Thanks Ranav, For CR I think the key is POE. The most commonly used elimination tool is "out of scope" followed by answers that do not answer the question exactly. Usually there are 2 good answers that your going to be deciding between. Look to make sure each answer answers the correct question, as well as if the answer really weakens when the question is asking you to strengthen. Most difficult questions are difficult because the answer choices are poor rather than the language being convoluted or hard to follow. RC - I read the entire passage and try to comprehend as much information as possible before moving onto the questions. I also go back into the passage for every question. I know this process is different from what most people will tell you to do, but I can understand what I read even if I read fast, so this works for me and may not work for others. 9r4life The timing part of the test makes me nervous. I start to panick when I can't figrue something out. I tend to speed up a lot when I begin to panick. Specifically, I think the verbal section gives me the most difficulty. My Quant is alwys higher than my verbal. I got a 39 on the Quant. After the test, I realized I made stupid errors on 10 math questions!!! You won't run out of time on verbal like you think you will. It's not very difficult to start slow and then speed up near the end. Just take your time and concentrate on getting as many questions right as you can. I did take a prep course, but I took the prep course a year ago. Do you think the hard Kaplan math problems are somewhat reprentative of the math? In addition to [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip], where do can I find some good CR questions? Oh, I am signed up to take the exam in two and a half weeks. I am taking the PP tests over the next couple of weekends. I don't think Kaplan is any good. Stick to PR or just the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and PP. Also questions on this forum are good as well. PR has decent CR questions. Good luck on your prep and keep us in the loop!
  5. manish2003 I don't know if your answer is right or not for the first one. I believe I chose something like 10^200 On the 2nd one, your right as order does not matter.

    Need advice

I would go take it if your getting those practice test scores.
  7. Kedar - you didn't have to find the actual number as I believe all the answers were in powers.
  8. I agree...SC is all about knowing enough rules to be able to process POE with some sort of success...try to learn the basics really well and try again! [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] is the best resource for SC
  9. Actual Test - 680 PP1 - 660 PP2 - 640 PR (took lots of these) ranged from 600 to 650. Kaplan "Diagnostic" (ya right) - 600 39Q (not my best but ok)/ 44V (excited about this one)
  10. Hi Your practice test scores show that you have the aptitude to do well. Puzzling that you haven't scored over 600. What part of the test makes you most nervous? Is your quant or verbal higher? I think for math I needed the structured "here is how to do this and that" of the PR course as I never paid any attention to my high school and undergrad math classes so I basically knew nothing. Also, I did EVERY SINGLE math drill on the online portion (that probably only comes with the $1300 class) which I think helped. My advice is to concentrate on mastering data sufficiency and the basic types of problem solving and forget learning all the advanced probability and such. I didn't see anything that required high math skills...basically you just needed to be fast..and I wasn't quite fast enough. Kaplan math is stupid for most of us...maybe those who are already fast and know math might benefit from their advanced math. I say work the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and maybe some PR stuff if you have it. Of course I only acheived a 39, so perhaps I needed a different type of prep than you. If you have the money I would take a full course though...if you have the time as well. I think that learning HOW to take the test is as important as learning math and verbal rules.
  11. Hi Duncan...I got the same score as you today...with crappy quant...but hey I'm in Marketing/Technology...what the hell do I know about math??? I'm great with a computer and a calc :) I could do everything that came up...just ran out of time and had to guess on the last 7. Regarding your question: I've heard that the score reports have your last 3 scores no matter where where you have sent them before. If you apply and then take the GMAT a few weeks later I doubt they would see the score as long as it has been a few weeks.
  12. 39 Q (57%) 44 V (98%) Total 680 (90%) Hello everyone, Well the big day was today and I'm very happy with how things turned out. I don't think this represents the best I can possibly do at least on the quant side, but I'm done with the GMAT at least for this application cycle. Little bit of history, I've taken the GMAT 3 times prior, but mainly for practice. I did my best 3 years ago while still in undergrad, with a 590. I've gone down to 560 and a few months ago 520! Terrible math skills (always got 41 in verbal..my strong subject). So I decided it was going to take a lot of hard work to reach my goal of a 650 plus score. I took a full 6 week PR course that was worth every penny even though it was expensive. I also used the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] working 25% or so of the total quant problems. I stopped working most of them eventually as they are too easy. I would just find the difficult ones or have my PR instructor point good ones out. I used PP and PR for practice tests. I scored around 650 in both. I scored a 600 on the Kaplan Diagnostic which I was excited about as the conventional wisdom is that that test scores you 100 points low. In my case 80, but hey, I'll take it. Anyways, here's how the test went. Essays were easy and I hoped I achieved a 5 or 6. I kept things simple and had some general ideas going in what I would write. I should of, but didn't practice at all on my essays. Whatever, it really isn't that hard to do. Quant section came up....ugh...i HATE math, but I felt ok because I knew that I had prepared for this. Math questions were to me not so much hard as time consuming. I think I did really well at first, and spent most of my time with harder questions. However, I spent too much time on a few problems and started running out of time with 10 questions to go. I had to basically guess on the last 7 which hurt me a lot I think. I'm confident I was up to at least 43 before missing lots of the end questions. My tip here is not to work on knowing EVERYTHING, but to work on doing unfamiliar problems FAST. The time limit is what is killer on the math portion. So I took my break and though I had bombed the math section. Decided I needed to do really good on verbal. The verbal was really easy to me, but everything besides SC was always easy. I'm glad I put at least a few hours into studying for SC as I didn't have too much trouble, although I'm sure that's where I missed a few. I encountered some really tricky SC. The RC were long and technical, requiring a careful initial read and then going back to the passage for each question. CR was not a problem, the answer choices were not to obtuse. So I totally expected to see 590 or 600 when I said "accept" and was so surprised that I achieved 680. I think with quicker pacing on the quant section above 700 would not be a problem, but I'm not applying to a top 10 school, so it probably won't matter. Don't really want to be in that type of academic environment anyways. Some things I that helped me...I got to the test center early in the morning and just walked around outside in the sunrise clearing my head for about 30 minutes. I also ate breakfast and took 2 caffeine pills...which helped me keep my focus up for the entire thing. I don't recommend prescription or illegal drugs to anyone, but a little caffeine won't hurt you and has been shown to help performance. So that's about it. The geometry was easy and I only saw one combination problem about (vaguely, not reprinting a question, don't want to violate any rules) having 5 x and 5 y and arranging them in 7 spots and you have to have one more x than y. I solved the problem like this...is this right? I don't use the formulas as they aren't needed for GMAT level perms and combs (my 800 scoring teacher doesn't use them). 5/4*4/3*3/2*2/1*5/3*4/2*3/1 = 7200/144 = 50 ways Also another difficult problem about x=10^100 so what does x^x =? I could maybe have solved manually given enough time but I think I got the right answer by ballparking and POE. So that's about it. If anyone has any questions I'll be glad to help...although I am no expert!
  13. I think a 680 with a 42Q is a good score for most non-engineer types. That should be good enough for programs outside the top 10. I think you should just focus on making your apps perfect and go with that score.
  14. Lofwyr

    IT HAS BEEN 12 YEARS

I think you should try your best and then see where you stand. I have never been a good math student (excel in Verbal), but I'm putting as much effort into the quant section as possible.
  15. I agree that RC and CR are the areas in Verbal that can be challenging to improve if you are not a voracious reader. I read all the time and find these sections easy, but SC is a real pain, as the English tested is different than common usage. Of course quant is my real challenge, as I haven't done math since high school! (business major)
  16. Thanks for your response Linda. I think I will start working from the back of the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] to the front. I took the free "diagnostic" test on Kaplan's website and got a 600 which is 60 to 70 points lower than I get on PR or PP. I think that test is designed to scare you into purchasing their materials or classes. Hopefully I will score above 650 on the real deal. I think I'll just concentrate on doing all quant questions in the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and hope that will be enough. I've already spent far too much money on this test!
  17. Hello - I take the GMAT in 8 days. I'm finding the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] quant to be somewhat easy (at least for the majority of questions) and I know that the real GMAT will be harder (from taking it before). I've completed the full PR course ($1200) and have done everything in my materials. I'm wondering what is best to look at next considering my timeframe. I've always been somewhat strong in verbal (always get a 41 without any studying) but weaker in quant. I'm hoping to score a 40+Q and 41-42 verbal. Would purchasing the Kaplan 500 Quiz Bank for $99 be a good investment. Will these be closer to the kind of problems that one should expect to see on the real test? Or does anyone have a list of the 100 hardest quant problems in the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] (10th edition)? I've worked up through ~240 in the PS and ~100 in DS but many of the questions seem useless for gaining knowledge. Are the problems harder near the end of the sections? Any suggestions are much appreciated. I'm applying to Emory and UGA 2 yr full time.
  18. This problem is easier if you draw out a line and cut it into 1/4s and 1/3rds..then its simple to see what possible lengths.
  19. So the answer is 14 or 15 (do we count 0 as a multiple...)?
