  1. I got in with 500V. I know one Romanian student who got in with 340V. As long as other parts of your application are strong, you have a good chance to get in.
  2. Hi guys, need your advice. I had an interview with MIT Brain and Cog Sci, if I can get in, I am going there. Otherwise, I have 2 options, UCLA and UCSD for CS PhD. Now can any of you give me some idea of which one is stronger in what fields of CS. My primary interest is machine learning and Cogtinive modeling, ans I guess UCSD is stronger for this. But I am an undergrad at UCSD and kind of tired of the San Diego area. Also, I may change my research to software engineering or vision. Any takers ? Z.
  3. I am not sure about Stanford. According to usnews forums, CMU CSD is done and should contact within next 1/2 days (someone got acceptance Monday, which is the first CSD decission I heard of; CALD decided last week though). I applied to both CS and CS/NBC program. I called MIT EECS and Area II will decide this week. I got into UCSD CS and have an interview with MIT BCS. So I am not terribly worried, (UCSD is pretty strong in cognitive modeling anyways). Still, the wait is killing me :(
  4. in a usnews forum few people were talking about getting acceptance letter from cornell, looks like they have started mailing.
  5. I dont think it will, particularly if you have too much class load in that quarter and the class is not directly related with your research interest. You can also take this class later and get a good grade before applying.
  6. Hi guys, I just received an invitation from MIT Brain & Cognitive Science department for an interview. They will probably offer admission to a fraction(50% ?) of the people they inteview. Can someone tell me what to expect ? I am interested in the computation track. Thanks
  7. Basically, I thought I would summarize my application hoping someone can shed some light on how much to expect. The toughest PhD programs in my list are, MIT: EECS & BCS CMU: CS & CS/CNBC Berkeley: EECS CALTECH: CNS My research interest is AI/Machine Learning/Cognitive Modeling. The GOOD: - 4.0/4.0 GPA from a top 20 CS school - A good but may not be great statement of purpose - 3 excellent letter of recommendation - Decent research experience in AI/Cognitive Modeling with well known, senior faculty. We are hoping to publish something this year at a wellknown conference. I also managed a conference talk in another a workshop. These are mentioned in the SOP. - Experience in industry(1 year), CS tutoring(1 year) and psychophysics programming (3+ months) THE BAD: -800Q, 500V, 5 AW; no subject test THE UGLY: - 2 C and 1 B in lower division math classes (out of typical 5) in Junior college. Although they are not counted for GPA at my current University, the admission committe will see the transcripts. I have some fallback schools. But are the top ones too far ? Thanks
  8. CMU provides a format the SOP for the CS PhD applciants, which is availabel at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/education/admissions/doctorate/how_apply.html Do any of you know how strict they are about it? Is it ok to deviate from it? Thanks. NB: Here is an excerpt from their website * Prepare a Statement of Purpose. Type or print neatly a concise one- or two-page statement in the format below. If you opted to apply to two programs and pay the additional fees, you may submit a separate Statement of Purpose for each program. Part I. Briefly state your primary interest of study within computer science, human-computer interaction, language and information technologies, robotics, software engineering or computational and statistical learning. Be as specific as possible in describing your interests. Research areas and projects in the School of Computer Science are listed on the SCS Research page. Part II. State your objective in pursuing a Ph.D. and why you are applying to Carnegie Mellon. Part III. Describe your background fields related to your objective. List here any relevant industrial or commercial experience. Part IV. Include any additional information you wish to supply to the admissions committee.

  10. Hi Sanjay, I am also applying to grad school(PhD). So far the feel I get about the admission process, UIUC and Austin might be hard to get into without research experience. Did you do something close to research in your job. You may want to highlight it in your statement. Have you thought of UCI. My professors(at UCSD) told me that UCI is moving up pretty fast.
  11. Hi Ruby, I am not sure about UTA, but grad schools generally dont accept transfers. Also, I thought UTA requires CS GRE.
  12. Thanks ozgulker, anybody else? :) I just wanted to add few more stuffs, - I got 5 in analytical wrtiting - I will be presenting a talk in a conference late january. I am also hoping to publish a tech report or a conference paper or both. I will mention these things in my statement. - I will not be taking the subject GRE, none of the schools I am applying to requires it though. Thanks a lot.
