  1. Absolutely not! I just come back from a tour of 3 universities where I got in and the first thing they ask is: what are your other options. And they they try to convince you that their place is the best.. So don't hesitate, ask them to compare themselves to the other school. Especially if the other school is Harvard, there is no shame to it... best,
  2. I think it depends on whether you have attended their "prospective weekends": if yes, then you have met with professors and you should 1) write a formal, cold letter to the dpt (I regret...), and 2) send an email to the profs you've met, saying I'm sorry, but I've chosen X program, because... (and of course the because is not: because your prgm sucks). If you were not invited to such a weekend, I think the formal letter will do: when rejecting us, they don't explain us why...why should we? Hope this helps
  3. Hi they don't average the score, they simply send the results of your 2 tests. However, many universities are known to average all the scores when they receive it... cheers
  4. from what I have read on this forum, it seems that no one, be it in education,politics,.... has heard anything from Harvard. This can only mean that they haven't sent any decision yet ... Even if we all got rejected, some of us should already have received their letter.
  5. Hi! Has anyone heard from Harvard, Princeton or Columbia about the PhD in Political Science? I am desperate to get news from them. So far I have received admission from MIT, Duke and U of Mich-ann arbor, and rejection from UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, and Yale. I am starting to think that no news means bad news, as the prgms where I have been accepted all notified me at least 15 days ago. Or haven't they made decisions yet? Anyone got an answer from these 3 prgms?? Should I write to ask? thank you!
  6. I am afraid there is not much I can comment about. What I can say is that powerprep was EXACTLY the same as the real TOEFL. I got 297 in PP1 and 300 in PP2, and 300 in the real test. Questions were easy. The pb with the listening section was only to listen carefully and try to remain concentrated during the whole "speech", which can last up to 4-5 min I guess. The rest is really easy because you have plenty of time. There was one question on which I hesitated for at least 10 min. It was on the text comprehension thing, and I was not sure about the meaning of the work "offset". Due to confidentiality clauses, I guess I cannot say more, but that is really the only question on which I had a doubt. Otherwise, I used only Poweprep. I guess there is no mystery. Read newspapers, talk in English and even more important, watch english TV or soaps Good luck! Thom
  7. yahoo, just got my official results and got a 6 in writing, which makes a total of 300 :) For those still preparing, I had no special preparation, but I constantly read in English (for my studies): journal articles, newspapers... Ohh and sthg else: I watched Friends (the TV show ) EXTENSIVELY (if not exclusively) . I think it helped me a lot improve my English... Good luck with your tests! Thomas
  8. Thanks for your replies. Well, I did not have the brillant idea to choose princeton from the 4 universities I ws allowed to pick... Now I'm wondering whether I am smart enough for princeton :shy:... Anyway,I've been browsing through this part of the forum and it seems that many people wait up to 5 weeks to get their result. So I have 2 questions: - ETS states on its website that scores will be sent 10 to 15 days after testing. Apparently this is not the case. Anything we do about it? - Is there a way to call them and ask to send my scores to Princeton right away, before I even receive the official paper sheet (so that I don't have to wait for post delays...): so that they send it as soon as they grade it... thanks in advance Thom
  9. Hi! I took the GRE on the 11th of November, and noticed afterwards (how stupid of me...) that the deadline for international students in Princeton was not Dec. 31 but Dec. 1st !! So my question is: Is there a way to have my GRE scores sent there on time and if not (if they arrive, say, a week or 2 later), are they going to look at my application?? I sent them an email, but they did not respond. Their website states that "the deadline for submission of the application and all supporting documents is Dec. 1st" Please also tell me if there is anything I can do to speed up the process of score report! Thank you in advance Thomas
  10. Real GRE: V660 ; Q770 Powerprep: 1) V710; Q760 2) V 750; Q 750 Kaplan: V 530 ; Q 720
  11. Hi! Well I no nothing about computer science, but I know one thing: TOEFL is the ONLY thing that can save your verbal. a very low verbal score like the one you have is not a big problem in CS, provided: 1) you have an excellent math score. 2) your TOEFL is good (above 260 i'd say, but mybe expectations are lower for CS). So take the TOEFL VERY seriously!! It might save you and help you get admitted somewhere
  12. Hi! Congrats on your amazing scores! Where are you going to apply for your PhD (which specific universities??) Best, Thom
  13. Hi! I just passed the GRE today and got the following results: Q770 and V 660. The verbal is a bit of a disappointment, but basically I'd like to know the following: given that I am an international student, will it still be sufficient to apply to the VERY BEST PhD programs in political science ?? I guess the Q part will be sufficient, but I am not so sure about the V. It probably won't stand on my way given that English is not my mother tongue, but any comments would be greatly appreciated best, thom
