  1. I also got E for the reasoning already mentioned in the first reply.
  2. Another way to reinforce that A is correct is to make up a question for which this sentence (or a portion of it, in this case) would be the answer. If you do this, a properly structured question would be... "To what extent is light from a distant galaxy shifted toward the red end of the light sprectrum by the rapid motion of the galaxy away from the earth?" At least to me, it seems more obvious that the "to" needs to come along with the "extent" when you word is at a question.
  3. Stumped also, but I am inclined to say that the second one is correct, because the use of "more" feels redundant, though I really do not have any solid reasoning to back this up.
  4. Just to hammer this point home, the following would be incorrect? Her debts are so extreme that they threaten the future of the company.
  5. Can someone define superficial parallelism for me? Thanks.
  6. A through C should be eliminated because it does not make sense to use "although" or "but" to compound the two clauses because they do not have a contradictory relationship. I was not positive between D and E, but E seemed to combine characteristics of the two distinct elements that are being discussed: New York's small museums and one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx.
  7. This doesn't seem right. If you remove the "or carbonaceous materials" you would get the following: "...carbon monoxide is formed by materials containing carbon are only partially combusted." The fact that the second half of the sentence starts with "are" implies that we need to use "when" here. I personally thought answer D was correct. I could be wrong though...
