  2. Thats great Vipul!! NYC is great...you will love it there (if thats where you are deciding on). I used to live in Manhattan for a few years, and I actually subleted my friends student housing apt for the summer at Columbia's law school when I first moved to NYC. If you can, try and get student housing...as I recall it was pretty cheap compared to the going rate. Good Luck! Let me know if you need any info. jsaucedo|at|hawaiii|dot|edu
  3. sushmita, i would not worry about it. I got a recruiting email from a department and asked them if I got in. they said they recommended me to the graduate school, and it was the graduate school (not the dept) who send out official letters. when she spoke on the phone she seemed like it was a formality that the graduate school had to let me in. I got my official letter today, so I know how you feel, and don't worry about it. I think its rare for a dept to recommend a student and the graduate school admissions committe to reject that student.
  4. was rejected from harvard today (ms computer science),..if you live in the US and got rejected then you probably already recieved your reject letter since I got mine in the mail today and live all the way in hawaii. was not to broken up about it since I got into brown which is ranked much higher. oh well. good luck to those who applied and congrad to those that got in! j3000
  5. vishwa, UCSF program still exists Biological and Medical Informatics (BMI) Graduate Program http://www.bmi.ucsf.edu/ they do collaborate with ucb alot. the more computer/informatics parts of the program are with berkeley and the medical/biology parts mainly are at ucsf. i'm sure I got rejected from ucsf because of my lack of bio/med research. I have only done computer stuff for NASA. i'm glad to go to brown though, and hope to do some projects with thier Neuroinformatics and Brain Science research group in the computer science dept.
  6. great job bakedbeans! i was rejected from UCSF phd bioinfo and am waiting on columbia masters results. got into brown ms cs...maybe i'll try SF again in 2yrs :shy:

  8. i spoke to someone a few weeks ago and they had about the same score as you and got in last year, but I don't know your or his gpa or what schools you did undergrad in. nyu is not bad...they are ranked 29th by usnews http://lazowska.cs.washington.edu/usnews2003/ai.htm i applied for fall 2004 and am waiting to hear from them. dunno about how much exactly it is, but its just as expensive as anyother good private university. plus manhattan is also expensive, but its also really fun it live there too. johnny3000
  9. :oi did it.....yippy! i got admission to Brown (for computer science masters)! I got an email today. rejected at u washington cs masters rejected at ucsf bioinformatics accepted at u chicago cs masters
  10. you can look at the methodology they use here http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/about/index_brief.php it depends on what group of rankings you are looking at, but its obvious that the rankings are not totally based on academia. for general ranking 10% is based on graduation rates and alumni giving. johnny3000
  11. well, i'm 1 for 2 to schools so far. in at u chicago rejected at u washington good luck for those of you that have not heard back yet. email below =============================================== Dear xxxxxxx, I regret to inform you that your application to the University of Washington Department of Computer Science & Engineering graduate program has been denied. We received over 1000 applications this year and were only able to admit approximately 85 students. The decisions were very difficult to make and we were forced to refuse admission to many excellent students. We sincerely appreciate your interest in our program and wish you the best of luck in the pursuit of your graduate education. Yours truly, xxxx xxxxx Graduate Program Advisor Computer Science & Engineering University of Washington
  12. vasu, i got into the MS CS program at uchicago as well! I got an actual paper package in the mail today; no email. what other schools did you apply to? johnny3000
  13. Vera, i did not read your email to the profs. but here are some comments. I hope you take them as constructive criticism. Prof. are very busy people. Most barely make time for their own students, let alone someone who is not even admitted yet. you stated "if I could talk to them about my own research" I think if you want a positve response, let them know how you can help them, not the other way around.
  14. not sure if the grad school is the same as undergrad, but I applied to a bunch of UC schools and got into all of them including berkeley for undergrad. they all sent out letters starting april 1st. I got my berkeley letter on about april 10th or so. not sure if that helps any. maybe the grad school send out at another time
  15. wow...thanks for all the input. yeah,..i'm applying to MS so only one school requires it that i'm applying to. so regardless of my score i'm applying. i'm just not sure if I should send my CS test scores for the schools that have the test as optional. i made the mystake of not applying to any ivy league schools when I was in high school because I thought there was no I i would get in to the lower ranked schools that I did apply to, but to my surprise I got into all the lower ranked schools. so this time i'm hoping to get one (but only one) rejection letter so that at least I know I got into the best place that I could.
