  1. Hi guys, I gave the gmat around 2 months back and got a dismal score of 670.Got a 41 in verbal and 43 in quant.I say dismal since am an engineer and maths was supposed to be my strength.I had prepared for 45 days of which most of the time went to verbal which I was able to improve on from a low of 31 in gmatprep to a high of 41 in the official gmat. In all of the gmat prep and manhattan tests I gave, my quant varied from 47 to 49.So that is what I had expected in gmat. But it seems I was wrong and was shocked to see a 43 in quant which is dismal by any standards. I want to retake the exam.Do you think I should and if I do what should be my strategy to knock the 700 barrier. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Ankit
  2. Great Job Shoebite.Best of luck with ur apps.
  3. I guess the OA is wrong. It cant be D.
  4. Total No Of Votes cast = 200. Assuming each voter cast his vote once the total number of votes should have been =100. From 1 ,No of votes in the Not favourable categoty =40. So 60 votes were favourable for both. Hence A.
  5. E it is.2 variables and only one equation. So inconclusive
  6. Should be C. From 1 we get the balance of the account on May the 1st. x+12/100*x = 504 so x=450. From 2 we know the monthly rate of increase is 8%. Hence we get the balance at the end of the mnth.
  7. A simpler approach could be a theoritical one . For the product of two decimals to be greater than 0.5 both decimals need to be greater than at least 0.5. Since 1*0.5=0.5.We can derive that for the product to be greater than 0.5 ,when none of the numbers can be greater than or equal to 1,both nos should be greater than 0.5. If both are greater than 0.5,the sum is obviously greater than 1.
  8. Though one can get the answer by plugging numbers ecartman explained it beautifully why we get the result... Any number not divisile by 3,when squared and added with 2 will be divisible by 3.
  9. got to be c. Since a and b are positive remember v can cross multiply.so 8a = 5b. a can be 5,10,15 and respective value of b can be 8,16,24. from stmnt 2 gcd =1 which is only possible if a = 5 n b=8.
  10. I guess A should be the the answer . A) Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component of municipal trash, many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal. CORRECT Subject Verb Agree.usage of Have is also correct. (B) Because paper of all kinds is the biggest single component in municipal trash, many municipalities tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal is reduced. Component In is UNIDIOMATIC © Because paper of all kinds are the biggest single components in municipal trash, many municipalities have tried to recycle to reduce the cost of trash disposal. SUBJECT-VERB ERROR (D) All kinds of paper are the biggest single components of municipal trash, and so many municipalities have tried recycling to reduce the cost of trash disposal. Sentence is wordy (E) All kinds of paper is the biggest single component of municipal trash, so many municipalities have tried to recycle so that the cost of trash disposal could be reduced. SUBJECT-VERB ERROR
  11. Scientists are currently trying to determine the extent to which tectonic plates have been shifted from their previous positions by earthquakes and other similar phenomena. A) to which tectonic plates have been shifted B)to which tectonic plates have shifted C)of the shift of tectonic plates D)to tectonic plate shifting E)that tectonic plates have been shifted
  12. Brilliant and thanks D is the correct answer.
  13. If anyone at InterCom Financial Advisers would have anticipated, or even suspected, the impending sale of the Koniko kelp processing plant, they would have advised owners of Koniko stock to unload all shares immediately. (A) If anyone at InterCom Financial Advisers would have anticipated (B) Had anyone at InterCom Financial Advisers anticipated © If any people at InterCom Financial Advisers would have anticipated (D) If any people at InterCom Financial Advisers had anticipated (E) If anybody at InterCom Financial Advisers anticipated This was a question posted by 800bob earlier.I found this while going through the archives. The particular question was not well discussed so am posting it again for further discussions.
  14. IMO A. B and E have Pronoun Antecedent error ;they refers to Alaska which is singular. Lets consider C. Alaska regularly deposits some of its profits from the sale of oil into a special fund intended to sustain the state’s economy after oil reserves are exhausted. Whose oil resource are exhausted is not clear in C. Lets take a look at D: Alaska regularly deposits some of its profits from the sale of oil into a special fund fund intended to sustain the state’s economy after exhausting its oil reserves. It seems as if the state economy is exhausting Alaskas oil resource. So we are left with A which sounds preety decent. But even in A I feel its not clear whether the its refers to Alaska or economy.
  15. I believe if would be correct if the choice was something like Some journalists who report on business warn that the foundation of the economy could be threatened if wild speculation is permitted to continue unchecked. But amongst these choices would go for C.
  16. 1. Although dozens of New York’s small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are many one-of-a-kind museums from Manhattan to the Bronx that are open for exploration on summer weekends. I followed the POE. (A) Although dozens of New York’s small museums are either devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, there are is wrong since although is not needed in the sentence.Although is used when u have sentences such as Although X but not Y. (B) Although dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups,Same as 1 © Dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, but there are Again but is not required here. (D) Dozens of New York’s small museums are devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, and there are also is correct (E) Devoted to local history or various ethnic groups, dozens of New York’s small museums and also changes the meaning of the sentence.
  17. I guess seen is a better alternative to been able to see which is wordier. I would go with A.
  18. I would go for B.Guys I am solving SC from KAP 800,but I feel most of them are really ambigous.I sometimes feel that the underlined part is more correct than the non underlined part.It seems to be doing me more harm than good.Even the explainations are very ambigous. Dont know, pour in with your thoughts.
  19. In contrast to the symphonies of Haydn, a much freer use of dissonance is evident in the symphonies of Mahler. (a) (b) In contrast with Haydn's symphonies, Mahler uses dissonance much more freely. © In contrast to those of Haydn, the symphonies of Mahler demonstrate a much more free use of dissonance. (d) In contrast to Haydn's symphonies, Mahler's demonstrate a much freer use of dissonance. (e) In contrast with Haydn's symphonies, those of Mahler use dissonance much more freely. Now my question is doesn't contrast work the same way as compare does. Had it been compared instead of contrast, in this case we would use 'compare with' since we are examining two like things. But the OA says it should be 'contrast to'.
