  1. 3. The number of people flying first class on domestic flights rose sharply in 1990, doubling the increase of the previous year. A. doubling the increase of B. doubling that of the increase in C. double as much as the increase of D. twice as many as the increase in E. twice as many as the increase of What is twice after comma ????? Twice after comma is known as appositive modifier . What does an appositive modifier do ? It modifies a noun preceded by a comma Do we really have a noun before comma ? No Hence, can we use twice here ? no Eliminate D and E Increase in vs increase of There is subtle difference between increase of and increase in Increase in GMAT SCORE would mean GMAT SCORE INCREASED How? Cannot increase on its own rt ? HARD WORK IS REQD !!!!!!! DAMNIT!!! increase of GMAT SCORE would mean from some GMAT SCORE I am left with A and C First , what is doubling doing here ? doubling acts as a participle which modifies the previous action ( verb in the previous clause ) let us analyze the sentence again The number of people flying first class on domestic flights rose sharply in 1990, and that has resulted in the doubling rt ? think of participle in this form as consequence of the first action . IMO A HTH!!

  3. At the annual stockholder's meeting investors heard a presentation on the numerous challenges facing the company, including among them the threat from a rival’s multi billion-dollar patent infringement suit and the declining sales for the company’s powerful microprocessor chip. including among them the threat from a rival’s multi billion-dollar patent infringement suit and the declining sales for which includes a threat of a multi billion-dollar patent infringement suit and declining sales of included among these the threat from a rival’s multi billion-dollar patent infringement suit as well as a decline in sales for among them the threat of a rival’s multi billion-dollar patent infringement suit and the decline in sales of among these the threat from a rival’s multi billion-dollar patent infringement suit as well as a decline in sales forOA HAS TO BE D ALL other options are wrong .
  4. There are exceptions when we talk about relative pronouns 379. In good years, the patchwork of green fields that surround the San Joaquin Valley town bustles with farm workers, many of them in the area just for the season. (A) surround the San Joaquin Valley town bustles with farm workers, many of them (B) surrounds the San Joaquin Valley town bustles with farm workers, many of whom are Well the answer is B as told by Erin and 800Bob.

  6. I would not generalize the sentence . Instead say : when a sentence begins with a clause( although, while) etc.. , a pronoun in the following clause will refer to the subject While depressed property values can hurt some large investors, they are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose equity -- in many cases representing a life's savings -- can plunge or even disappear. THe sentence is correct (ACCORDING TO OG 10 ). one can argue that they is ambiguous . However, considering og bible, I would say " They" is not Why ? Because "they" refers to values and not owners( subject of the clause) . While Jackie Robinson was a Brooklyn Dodger, his courage in the face of physical threats and verbal attacks was not unlike Rosa Parks, who refused to move to the back of a bus... Another one from OG ( his refers to jackie ) however, there are couple of sentences in OG where the pronoun refers to the nearest noun available. I would still keep this rule as the one I stated above HTH!!!
  7. case1: Sc1: Although reclusive author Harper Lee wrote just one book in her lifetime; it is widely considered a masterpiece. => Moct test explains that this sentence is wrong because 'it' can refer to both 'book' and 'lifetime'. A semicolon indicates a pause. Rt after the semicolon we have it. Now a regular reader will have to go back and recollect what it stands for. That can lead to ambiguity. We don’t have a clear reference. Hence, Lifetime is wrong !! SC: I bought mangoes and called my sons so that they could arrive on time. Why is this correct ???? when you encounter “and “,you look for parallelism ( the part that has to be repeated for the second part) Called is a verb so I will have to repeat noun “I” I bought mangoes and I called My sons so that They could arrive on time . What is so that ?? So that is an expression that means in order to Example: I studied so that I can earn money If I intend to leave out the second “I” I would say : I studied in order to be able to earn money. Here the doer is the subject and the action in the form of in order to pertains to the subject . However , when we encounter a sentence such as Ram ate shayam’s bananas so that he can put on Who can put on ? Clear ambiguity Why is the first example ( I studied so that I can earn money ) correct then ? You know where I am heading to? Don’t you!! An object is attached with the first verb ( ate) and that has created ambiguity Getting back to the original sentence I bought mangoes and called my sons so that they could arrive on time. Split the sentence : I called my sons so that they could arrive on time They would clearly refer to Sons Why ? (it has an object attached to the verb ) They is only plural and refer to sons !!!!I is singular !!
  8. IMO A AND HERE IT IS WHY? Which is unnecessary why ? Sample this : The brightest chap, lost_into_wild , who was very focused scored a perfect 800. CAN we do without a who ??? The brightest chap, lost_into_wild , was very focused scored a perfect 800. Perfect rt? GMAT IS ABOUT GETTING RID OF THE EXTRAS!! HTH!!!
  9. I HAVE NOT SEEN EVEN ONE OFFICIAL QUESTION THAT TESTED ME ON THAT , AT LEAST ON GMAT LAND. HUH!!! It depends on the context We use speak with when we intend to describe the talk as a discussion . Example: The manager of the firm spoke with the supervisor on various issues. What it means is that the manager and supervisor had a discussion . In other words, both spoke and it was a two way communication However, when i use speak to i mean to say the manager did the talking and supervisor stood there like as DUMB**** Cheers!
  10. E has a classic double comparator That and 's Ram's bike Is equal to that of ram but not equal to that of ram's HTH!!!
