  1. the 'signaling' effect of school choices is no doubt an important consideration, more so through applying to schools with strength in your super-specialty ... but a wider choice may actually signal a greater commitment to your research agenda (rather than the prestige of the school) ... so maybe the right application range is more of a grey area :hmm: (somewhere in between casting-the-net-far-and-wide and applying-to-only-top-10)
  2. not all the programs at these univs are in english though - eg. st gallen has a few phd tracks that are taught only in german - so you might want to shoot off a template-ized mail to grad coordinators at the above schools asking for that kind of info
  3. @ doriangray - maybe you can save on the two years by going for a masters straightaway (if not psych then there's soc / econ/ math /stat etc) Or maybe you can try landing an RA position in your undergrad univ. I think that might be a better use of those years preparing for a phd ...
  4. No more results? huh ? This entire privacy discussion seems to have shut everyone up! Sorry for initiating that :(
  5. You might want to improve your gmat score, if you want to have a shot at some of the higher ranked schools in your list. The teaching exp and #2 in MBA should help imo ... About the list - you might want to add Pitt there - they've got a very supportive faculty group in strategy, and have had some good placements recently (but you probably still need higher scores) PS: ofcourse, take everything with a pich of salt - by the time you have collected scores of opinions, a lot of them will sound completely contradictory :P
  6. Whoa  thats a lot of pressure! I agree with the spirit of what you're saying. Seriously though, 'public figure' might be a bit excessive :p,
  7. logistics. btw anyone else getting freaked out about privacy issues ? I think a lot of us have uniquely identified ourselves here :D
  8. Program: Macro-OB/Economic Sociology/Organizational Sociology GRE Score: 800Q 710V 4.5AWA Undergrad: Honors + Accelerated Masters in Chemical Engg; Research experience: -Thesis/Dissertation -A couple of papers presented in conferences Professional experience: Organizational Strategy Consulting; Small business owner Attending: Stanford Admitted: Stanford Withdrawn before formal offer: Cornell, Michigan, Minnesota, Emory, Alberta, Pitt Rejected: MIT Sloan, Chicago Booth, Northwestern
  9. I'm an incoming non-econ student, and I needed to take Micro & econometrics as part of my GPR. how're the Econ courses different from the MgtEcon courses at the GSB ?
  10. yep - the phd rankings are absolutely terrible - it's like one of those statistics consultants cook up just because they have some data left over :D
  11. top b-schools often recruit professors from disciplinary fields such as Sociology, Psychology, Economics - so you're not at a big disadvantage if you follow your interests to a univesity department rather than a b-school, imo ...
  12. yup - mainly because (as far as i can remember) the Phd ranking is an aggregate of number of papers published (unadjusted for quality of journals!) and number of phd's graduated ( a volume metric that puts smaller programs at a disadvantage) However you could use it to draw up a laundry-list of b-schools :D - and then get on to the arduous task of selecting from them !
  13. I think therer's also an FT global business school ranking for 2008/09 ... though they are heavily skewed by salary numbers (which in a non-free-trade world is a bad statistic to put too much weight on :D )
  14. SCJ probably has the smallest phd cohorts in the top-50 ... they have a combined phd student group of less than 30 (all years, all areas)!
  15. made the decision today (semi-formally, or whatever online decisions mean!) A formal ding from the only other school in consideration and withdrawals from almost everywhere else, made it pretty easy :P going to stanford this fall! :D
  16. i feel so completely out-of-the-loop :P
  17. Yup, the closest overlap is in IS. But there's also some overlap with macro OB. CMU maybe a great place for your interests - they have strength in IS, plus there are faculty working on similar things in Tepper OB and Pitt-strategy. Perhaps you could go about finding specific faculty who publish in those areas, and then check out where they are located ? (that's what i did anyway :) )
  18. oh, and one more: Asking area specific questions in the larger "area" thread instead of starting a new topic, significantly improved the quantity & quality of answers i received :D
  19. Key lesson for me: After a while, books are a waste of time - instead spend the time mulling over what you've read :)
  20. Thing is, your interests are spread pretty wide, in terms of departments/schools ... is it the interaction dynamics that interest you - or the socio-economic implications ? (i.e. the mechanism or the impact?)
