    A simple QC

    If a question is like below: Col A: 4*sqrt(4) Col B: sqrt(36) What should be the answer? Should we take only the positive square root or the negative square roots as well. In case we take the negative roots also, answer will be D. In GRE, Can we assume that sqrt(4) always means the positive square root? I'm not sure about it. Please carify ...
  2. Sorry ... this post has made twice because of connectivity problem (pressing the submit button twice) ... I couldn't delete the post ...
  3. Can anybody please solve the following problems for me? I don't have OA. A) Given a triangle with sides AB=5 & BC=13. If AB:BC = 5:13, then what is ratio of BC:AC? B) Given that 500 people were asked two questions whether to say either 'yes' or 'no'. Of that, if 410 people said yes to first one and 220 people said yes to second question. What is the least number that said yes to both? A. 90 B.110 C.150 D.190 E. 220

  5. Unit digits of perfect squares are never 2,3,7, or 8 (x+y)^2=9 ==> x + y = 3 or -3 subtracting it frm the 1st equation ==> y = 5 A number is divisible by 3 if summation of its digits are divisible by 3 1 + 5 = 6 7 + 5 = 12 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 2 + 9 + 7 = 18 3 + 1 + 3 = 7 not divisible by 3. Therefore, this is the answer 20^8 = 20 * 20^7 20/4 = 5 so,(1/4)(20^8) = 5(20^7) (3+1/7) - 7/22 7/22 is almost 1/3 Since, 1/3 - 1/7 = 4/21 So, The value will be greater than 2.5 => nearest integer 3
  6. Yes you are right. So, the answer should be 6*3!*2 = 72 Thank you very much
  7. Can anybody please solve the following problems??? 1. If 40% of y is multiplied to 50% of 3y, then how much percent is it to 2y^2s? 2. Given that 7 workers working together finish a work in 140 hrs. If starting 4 workers takes 'h' hrs each and rest 3 takes '2h' hrs each to complete the work then what is the difference between the median and mean of the individual working hours?
  8. I am not considering 4 "Chairs" ... rather considering 4 "gaps" ... From the 4 gaps only 3 will be used ... so a total of 6 chairs will be used at a time ...
  9. Let us denote girls as G1, G2, and G3 And boys as B1, B2, and B3 Let us first make the girls sit together (ladies first indeed). G1,G2,G3 G2,G1,G3 .............. .............. (total 3! = 6 permutations) Now, let us make gaps in both sides of the girls ... _G1_G2_G3_ So, a total of 4 gaps are there where boys are to be inserted. B1 G1 B2 G2 B3 G3 B2 G1 B1 G2 B3 G3 ............................. ............................. (Total 4P3 = 24 permutations for this setting of girls) Therefore, total 24*6 = 144 different arrangements are possible ... Let me know if I am wrong:hmm:
  10. "decibel" is this type of scale. 40 = 10logx => x = 10^(40/10) = 10000
  11. Yes ... now I understood ... Thanks friends ...
  12. Can anybody please describe a fast method for solving the following type of problem? AD>0 Col A: A-B Col B: C-D I don't have any OA.
  13. I think this problem is similar to the following one (I have forgotten where did I get it). A family has two children. We know one of them is a boy. What is the probability of the other one being a boy? ANS: In general, 4 possibilities are there. [b b], [b g], [g b], and [g g] However, the last one is not possible if we know that one child is boy. [b b], [b g], [g b] So, the probability of other child being boy = 2/3 Please make me correct if I am wrong
  14. You cannot eliminate w like that ... what if w=0??? Column A = Column B = 0 Right? So, ans D
  15. This question would be ambiguous if it would state to assume any three points on a circle. However, in this case, it is clearly depicted that only line AB runs through the center. IMO, that is why, the answer A is more convincing as an OA.

    This is done by interpolation. We need to find the value of 53rd Number. We know, 21st number is 74 and 73rd number is 78 Therefore, 53rd number = 74 + (78-74)/(73-21)*(53-21) In other words, the rate of increase of value from 21st number to 73rd number is (78-74)/(73-21). So, what will be the increase of value from 21st number to 53rd number? (78-74)/(73-21)*(53-21)
  17. Can you then show me some pictures of non-similar cylinders? Since, the word "Cylinder" means a particular shape, IMO, When you will say "Similar Cylinders" it will imply that the volumes are also same. :( However, your conception is also correct because similar triangles do not imply congruence. I think there is any information missing in this problem.

    The process you employed is okay for Arithmetic mean, not for median

    Urgent

    I am not sure whether ALL the last 65 students scores are 78 or the median of last 65 students scores is 78. For the 1st possibility, the answer is quite easy. ----74-74-------78,78,78,78,78,78 // Value |----|--|----|---|--------------| 1---20,21---40--41------------105 // Position Since, median is actually the 53rd term, it is obviously 78. For the 2nd possibility, ----74-74--------------78------- // Value |----|--|----|---|------|-------| 1---20,21---40--41----73-----105 // Position From this information how could you know that the 53rd term is 78?? What most compelling comes to mind in this case is, 53rd term = 74 + (diff between 78 and 74) / (Diff of position of 78 and 74) * (53 - 21) = 74 + (4/52)*32 = 76+6/13 or 76.46 :hmm::hmm: Please correct me if I am wrong
  20. Will anybody please solve this problem? If a plant grows half of its previous height every day, then what will be its ratio of increase of height for 4th day to 7th day increase?
  21. what if m=1; p=1? .... then the ans is C ... right? so, ans D
  22. Are you from Bangladesh? I have encountered similar problem as yours (Chayan's Diary). What is your score? Visit the following post http://www.www.urch.com/forums/toefl/105433-i-can-retake-no-cost-but-should-i-r25-l27-s24-w18-94-a.html
  23. Hi All, Please advice me about the following situation. I took TOEFL in 9th Nov and the score is as below: Reading = 25 Listening = 27 Speaking = 24 Writing = 18 and Total = 94. Due to power failure and several other technical problems that I encountered in test day (you may read about that in Chayan's Diary), ETS gave me an option ... to cancel the score and retake the test free of cost ... They will bear the cost for taking the test again. Now ... I am seeing that all scores are quite well except writing (18). What I need to know is ... Will it (the writing score) be a great barrier for funding in American Universities? If I retake the test ... I am confident the writing score will increase .... But i'm not so confident about the other bands. So, what should I do now? retake or not? Please suggest .... Best Regards,
  24. The answer is good. Two similar cylinders can not imply anything other than their volumes are same.
  25. Sorry, 28 also has factors more than 3. like 1, 2, 4, 7, 14. However, 10 has only 3 factors (including 1) - 1, 2, 5.
