  1. UCSD had their grad day visit this weekend Mar 7,8.
  2. I believe a lot of schools offer support for PHD but not always the MS program. I believe it is common for MS programs to have no support initially, but if you show promise after you start you can get TA,RA support. Before you give up and try to reapply, I would talk to someone there and see what you chance are for getting support in subsequent semesters (That's if you have not done that already).
  3. Many people have been posting on the usnew gradschool forum regarding their acceptance / rejects, you might try there.
  4. I am still waiting to here from the other schools before I make a decision. I also plan to attend the UCSD open house to hear from some of the professors. I am not sure with which professor I want to study with quite yet. I have some ideas based on what I have read of their research but I still want to learn more. The general field I am interested in is AI, but there are a lot of sub specialties that still interest me and I don't know which way I am leaning yet.
  5. Well I guess for me personally, there were a lot of factors. I have always been interested in advancing computer science but got side tracked for various reasons initially. My first internship was very interesting, and I was basically working on stuff that had not been done before (or at least no one had tried the approach I was using when I researched it). So basically, I had a lot of independence to investigate an interesting problem, and the results quickly had an impact on the bottom line of the company. This was very exciting to me. As I was finishing my undergrad degree I believed alot of the innovative work was being done by small companies in industry. After 11 years, it does not feel like there is much innovation from a technical standpoint. Most of the innovation is more along the lines of business models. This is not to say that I did not work on some interesting things. I was able to work on operating systems for PDA and Smart Phones, develop an ISP and database backed web site, and data mining for interactive television. For the most part however, I was applying things I already knew how to do, or were well understood by other people. I decided I wanted to work for smaller companies based on dismal experience interning at IBM. I quickly learned that at smaller companies, When I first started to lose interest, I was about 5 years out of college, and my wife was in medical school. So, I was somewhat interested in going back to school, but paying for medical school, a mortgage, etc. meant that it would require painful sacrifices for both of us. In the end I decided to stick with it, at least till she finished her residency. The next six years helped me realize more and more that what I enjoy most is research. I love diving deep into a problem, arguing about it with others, and trying to find a new approach to a problem, or a new way to understand a problem. This is not what I was doing at work, and I saw no way to morph my position at work to do this. Now my wife has finished her residency, and I am going to back to school to pursue what I love. That was more than you probably care to know about my situation, but you asked :-)
  6. Admit @ UCSD. I was fortunate enough to receive admitance notification at UCSD CS for PHD today. I was notified by email. 11 years of bay area startup experience. 3.7 GPA from UCB, 780Q, 640V 5.5AWA, 820 CS AGRE. I have also applied for phd at UCI and UCR, and master at UCLA. I have not heard from any other school.
  7. I was just curious, do you already have a masters. I am applying for CS PHD programs except at UCLA. I decided to appy for masters at UCLA because the UCLA web page said that they only let people straight into the PHD program if they are exceptional. Since, it is already difficult to get into UCLA I figured I would play it safe and apply for the masters.
  8. Has anyone applied to the UCI CS program and received confirmation that their application is complete and being considered. I have received confirmation from all the other schools I applied to UCLA,UCSD,UCR that the application is complete ,but I have not heard from UCI. The UCI page just says don't send them mail asking if the application is complete, they will send you mail if it is not complete. However, I can't help but stress about it, and was wondering if anyone else has received confirmation? Thanks
  9. I applied to UCI, UCLA, UCR, UCSD for admission in CS, and I just discovered a confirmation email for the UCSD application go filtered as junk mail and I don't usually read my junk mail! I received initial confirmation from all of the schools, stating that they received the application, but I am wondering if I missed any secondary confirmation email. If you applied to any of these schools, can you tell me what confirmation you received. Thanks in advance for the help.
  10. I decided to send my score even though it is just ok, 820. The schools that did not request it, UCI and UCR are out of the top 20 (especially UCR) so I am hoping that it will be average to above average. Since I have been out of schools so long, I am hoping that if they look at it, it will alleviate concern about me remembering what was covered in undergrad. One point of concern for me, was that UCI states that if you don't have an undergrad in CS you need a CS Subject test score in at least the 80th percentile. That means I would just barely meet that standard! This caused me some concern, but in the end I decided to go ahead and send it. Now I get to second guess myself for months ;)
  11. I believe USC allows MS admissions as late as June. That would give you plenty of time. I also believe that UC Riverside, has admission deadlines in march. Hope that helps. There are lots of state universities which I believe have admissions deadlines in the spring. Your scores might be okay for some schools anyway depending on the rest of your application, but if you are interested in going to any school, then there are some with deadlines that would allow you to retake the GRE.
  12. According to the U of T at Austin the average score for the PHD program is 820 and I believe it is a top 10 or 20 school. http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/UTCS/gradoffice/admission/admission.html Has anyone else found other references to CS Subject scores at various schools. The curve for the CS test may be retreating some. If you look at the CS Subject prep booklet, 820 was 94% based on scores from 1993-1996, but now it is only 84%. I am guessing the the new percentages are based on aproximately 1999-2003. Some of that change is likely due to CS attracting a lot more applicants, but some of it might be the problems with cheating ETS was having. Assuming the cheating problem has been solved, it might be the case that for people taking the test in 2003 the curve has gotten a little easier and you will look better relative to other applicants then the percentage given by ETS would imply. However, there is no way to know.
  13. Well I guess I am just glad the waiting is over. I got 820 84% on the test. Which is ok, I guess, I was worried I would do worse after being out of school for 11 years. I need to figure out if I should send the score to schools that I applied to, but don't require the subject test - UCR and UCI specifically.
  14. I am trying to figure out if I should send my CS subject score to CS programs that say they only require the CS subject test for applicants that did not have an undergraduate degree in CS. I am applying for CS PHD programs in southern California. So far I have applied to UCI, UCSD, UCLA, and UCR. I am interested in a CS PHD in AI and really only want to do a masters if it is necessary to get into a PHD program. I graduated from UC Berkeley 11 years ago, and have been working for a variety of software companies since then. During most of the time I have been director of engineering. I have a little research experience, but no papers published. My CS GRE score is 820 My General GRE scores are 780Q, 630V, 5.5AWA MY GPA at UC Berkeley was 3.7 All my recomendations will be excellent, but from supervisors (VP of engineering) and not professors since I have been out of school for so long. What do you think about sending a CS Subject Score of 820 Thanks for your feedback
