Hi people, The OA is 'B'. In the option B B) a company’s managers can determine how much effort should be dedicated to each of the company’s products in order to meet its short and long term goals. What reference does "its " have. Is this not an example of possessive poison? Where you should mention the word company as its company's short and long term goals:rolleyes:. Can someone throw some light on this, Please!

By applying optimization techniques commonly used to plan operations, it is possible to determine how much effort ought to be devoted to each of a company’s products in order to meet its goals in both the short and long terms. A) it is possible to determine how much effort ought to be devoted to each of a company’s products in order to meet its goals in both the short and long terms. B) a company’s managers can determine how much effort should be dedicated to each of the company’s products in order to meet its short and long term goals. c) it can be determined by company managers how much effort ought to be devoted to each of the company’s products in order to meet its goals, both short and long term. D) it may be possible for company managers to determine how much effort should be dedicated to each of these products in order to meet the company’s short and long term goals. E) managers at a company can determine how much effort ought to be dedicated to each of these products in order to meet the company’s goals in both the short and long term.

2^(-8) + 2^(-9) + 2^(-10) + 2^(-11) + 2^(-12) + 2^(-12) = 2^(-8) { 1+ 2^(-1) + 2^(-2) + 2^(-3) + 2^(-4) +2^(-4)} = 2^(-8) { 1 + 1/2 + 1/4 +1/8 +1/16 +1/16} =2^(-8) { 1 + 1/2 +1/4 +1/8 +1/8} =2^(-8) { 1 + 1/2 +1/4 +1/4 } =2^(-8) { 1 + 1/2 +1/2} =2^(-8) { 1 + 1} =2^(-8) *2 =2^(-7)

Inter World Entertainment Corporation, which owns the Live Town and Thursday Matinee retail chains, announced that since sales of up to one-third of its stores are poor, they will be closed. (A) that since sales of up to one-third of its stores are poor, they will be closed. (B) it is closing up to one-third of its stores, which accounted for its poor sales. © it was closing up to one-third of its stores because of poor sales. (D) to be closing, on account of poor sales, up to one- third of its stores. (E) having poor sales, such that up to one- third of its stores will be closed. After having a close look at the all the options and obviously the OA, I feel, clearly options A, D and E can be eliminated without much of ambiguity. Consider option B> International World Entertainment Corporation, ... ,announced that it is closing up to one-third of it stores, which accounted for its poor sales. This sentence conveys the meaning that one-third of the stores account for poor sales, where as the sentence is, that because of the poor sales one-third of the stores are closing down. This is one error i could point out. But still why is 'is closing' not correct. Does is not agree with the tense. announced that it is. :hmm: Option C> International World Entertainment Corporation ,......, announced that it was closing up to one-third of its stores because of poor sales This option clearly states why , one-third of the stores are closing down. Again, why is "was closing" correct? Anyone to opine on this one!

1. Astronomers studying the newly discovered star say that it provides clues about our galaxy’s origin, that it may supply data about how fast our galaxy is expanding, and moreover it is perhaps the most distant star in the entire Milky Way. (A) about how fast our galaxy is expanding, and moreover it is perhaps (B) regarding the speed our galaxy expands at; moreover, they think it may be © about how fast our galaxy expands and perhaps be (D) on the galaxy’s expansion rate and perhaps (E) about how fast our galaxy is expanding, and that it is perhaps A) 'about how fast.. moreover it is perhaps' is wordy. B) 'regarding the speed it expands at' sounds awkward C) Correct. provides clues.. about our galaxy's origin..... galaxy expands.. clear meaning and correct parallel construction ( I think!) D) 'perhaps the most distant star' is an incomplete construction E) 'and that it is perhaps' sounds awkward . To be honest i took quite sometime to choose between 'C' and 'E'. IMO 'C':) OA please!!

A) since sales of up to one third..... they will be closed. I think 'they' is incorrect to use for stores. B) Looks somewhat correct. C) "it was closing" sounds like they had decided to close but now they are not. D) ' to be closing,.....' sounds awkward E) If we see the flow of the sentence IWE corporation announced that having poor sales, such that... sounds awkward again. Thus, IMO B :) What is the OA?

Hi gmat1mar, Thank you so much for posting the correct option. I have a soft copy of OG-10 and i guess it must have been a printing error. Thanks once again!!
-
Hi mitzi, Thanks a ton for your explanation. I get the reduced part. Actually i have an online version of OG 10. Its Q) 178. I was so hoping that there should be some text, like a "has" at the end of the statement to make it a clear cut choice. Hey apart from the Manhattan SC can you suggest some other stuff to practice idioms and Sub - Verb agreement. I am hopeless in SC. :(

Q1) In the last few years, the number of convicted criminals given community service sentences. which allow the criminals to remain unconfined while they perform specific jobs benefiting the public, have risen dramatically. (A) sentences, which allow the criminals to remain unconfined while they perform specific jobs benefiting the public, have (B) sentences, performing specific jobs that benefit the public while being allowed to remain unconfined, have © sentences, performing specific jobs beneficial to the public while they are allowed to remain unconfined, have (D) sentences which allow them to remain unconfined in their performing of specific jobs beneficial to the public has (E) sentences allowing them to remain unconfined while performing specific jobs that I know this one is a simple OG-10 question. Clearly option A B and C are ruled out as the subject and verb do not agree. But option D and E are confusing. If D sounds wordy then E also does not make sense with the sentence. Can someone explain this please? Thank you.

Hey thank you. That was very well explained .I get it!!

Hey 12rk34, I am sorry, but am unable to understand the solution to Q1. In Q1) I understood up till Concentration of chemical B becomes double. So the rate of reaction will become half. Now to maintain the rate we need to increase the concentration of A so that the rate is doubled. To double it we will have to increase concentration of A Why is it that we have increase the concentration of A to root-2 ? Can you please simplify it further. Thank you. An thank you for the Q2), I was doing separate calculation for adding $0.30 and doubling it.
-
Hey, congratulations thats an awesome score!! Looking forward to hearing more on your preparation.
-
Q1) The rate of chemical reaction is directly propotional to the square of the concentration of chemical A present and inversely propotional to the concentration of chemical B present . If the concentration of chemical B is increased by 100 percent , which of the following is closest to the percentage change in the concentration of chemical A required to keep the reaction rate unchanged. A) 100% decrease B) 50% decrease C) 40% decrease D) 40% increase E) 50% increase Q2) A certain library assesses fines for over due of books as follows. On the first day that a book is over due, the total fine is $0.10. For each additional day that the book is either increased by $0.30 or doubled, whichever results in the lesser amount. What is the total for a book on the fourth day its overdue? A) 0.60 B) 0.70 C) 0.80 D) 0.90 E) 1.00 The above question is really simple but my ans is not matching the OA. Wondering the catch to it :rolleyes: Thanks for your help!! :)
