Attending: Wisconsin-Madison (no 1st year $) Other offers: Cornell Comments: 2 of 18 was more than I needed, after the flyout I am very happy about my decision. Oh, once again I can become a football fan! I took a risk in declining last years offers and it paid off, not in a resounding fashion but my preferences are better met by this years outcome. Note: No school to which I was admitted, or wait listed or applied last year accepted my application this year; It was a good thing I did not apply to Wisconsin last year!!!

So, I have been wondering when someone was going to start this thread, and I had hoped that they would borrow Canuck's title from last year when they did. I hope I am not making a mistake but I searched this and I did not find that it had been started yet, so here it is. Oh, and here is a format to post it in, as people seem to like those. No, I am sorry I do not know about the funding wait-list, but the list is somewhat short this year, correct. They will more than likely contact you, Penn is known for asking quite directly what your options are and from the offers you have received you have a very good bargaining position.

Hey, congrats! I was wait-listed last year and I know at least 2 people were given offers that were on last years wait-list. IMO you have money in the bank, so to speak, and a tough decision btwn Mich and Penn. BTW, I was one of those who were rejected from Penn last Friday. Again, congrats and Best Of Luck.

I received an official notfication from BU that my application had been reviewed favorably and that I was on their waitlist on the 21st of April? What does this mean? I don't know.

Wow, i don't mean to be a contrarian, but on some of your points I feel that a few of you are being cynical. There is allot to be gained from developing work that is publishable, I do agree if all one wants is to have their name up in lights then yes it is foolish. But I do believe that many undergrads and more specifically the group that cares enough about economics to involved in this forum probably have something to share, also it can go a long way in helping you develop you PhD dissertation or some of the early research papers that you will be asked to write during your first few years of PhD study. I think that having developed an idea that is worthy of publication and then defending it is worthy of the effort that will be required int the form of confidence and the ability to self edit and good methods for handling criticisms, valid or not. That said, if you have the time then I say go for it, it is a good opportunity to learn non-standard methods that are not taught in the classrooms of your ordinary undergrad education. You will have the benefit of seeing how a professional does the job, and yes it does take a long time to get through the process. :)

Do you have any particular faculty at your school who you really admire, and are you really interested in their work? Does any of their work parrallel or overlap any of your ideas? Ideas don't have to be well worked out, but reasonably thought out hunches, after you have thoroughly considered the question on your own you could begin to discuss it with this person. Or, you could find a class taught by this individual, and if there is a paper to be written, you are in luck as you have been granted the golden opportunity to make your pitch in writing. You never know what a well placed interesting idea will bring. If you are able, make sure you have the neccesary skills to complete he grunt work on your own, you will need to be independant and allow your supervisor to come in at the last moments and merely verify your methods and perhaps formalize the argument within your work. Also, take advantage of any undergrad research opportunities, honors programs and classes that teach you very specific skills for conducting research, whether it be analysis and game theory for an applied/ experimental research paper or an econometrics course that teaches programs like stata and matlab. Anyone can do it, and we all have something to share, so go for it.
