  1. Paradoxical!!!!! BTW: Canuck, I am happy you don't mind the reuse of your "Kittens".......
  2. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 10 overall, top 15 econ Undergrad GPA: 3.75/4.00 Graduated High Honors Economics GRE: 760Q, 580V, 5.0 AW (last year 740Q) Math Courses: Analysis I (B)(blew first 2 exams but aced final to save myself), Modern Algebra (B+), Probability Theory (A-), Ord Diff Eq (A), Combinatorics(Winter 2010), CalcI,II,II,LA(A) Math Courses (Grad): Intro Topology (Winter 2010) Econ Courses: Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Macro (A), Econometrics (A-), Random Field Courses (A), Research Seminars (B+(due to ULWriting) and A), Game Theory (A), Time series Analysis (A-) Econ Courses (Grad): Micro I (B+), Micro II (B), Econometrics I (B), Math for Economists (B) Letters of Recommendation: Well-known senior professor from research seminar The other from a younger associate prof, said he wrote me an A+ letter (took game theory with him + unofficial adviser) Research Experience: Financial econometrics research for senior thesis(publication: in process); experimental micro theory research. Labor research paper that will likely become my third year paper for my PhD, it caught the interest of a Senior person at my undergrad institution. Teaching Experience: None. Research Interests: Everything but Theoretical Econometrics. Statement of Purpose: Much better the second time around but still about 1800 words, I had a few things to write about my career outside of econ and how it will influence my research. Other: Concerns: Poor performance in critical math classes, test jitters! RESULTS: Acceptances: Wisconsin Madison, Cornell Rejections: Umich, Penn, Yale, Texas, Penn State, BU, Maryland, Mich State, Princeton, Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, CalTech, Stanford, Northwestern, Duke
  3. Attending: Wisconsin-Madison (no 1st year $) Other offers: Cornell Comments: 2 of 18 was more than I needed, after the flyout I am very happy about my decision. Oh, once again I can become a football fan! I took a risk in declining last years offers and it paid off, not in a resounding fashion but my preferences are better met by this years outcome. Note: No school to which I was admitted, or wait listed or applied last year accepted my application this year; It was a good thing I did not apply to Wisconsin last year!!!
  4. Can we keep the thread clean, let's use it for what it was intended. Thanks! PS :bumped:
  5. Yes, that was an oversight. I have been trying; however I may not be able to, so if asquare or another moderator can I would greatly appreciate their help. I apologize for this.
  6. So, I have been wondering when someone was going to start this thread, and I had hoped that they would borrow Canuck's title from last year when they did. I hope I am not making a mistake but I searched this and I did not find that it had been started yet, so here it is. Oh, and here is a format to post it in, as people seem to like those. Feel free to indicate with or without funding, but it's no prereq: Attending: Other offers: Comments: Also, like Canuck last year, I don't know where I will go just yet although I don't mind the idea of being a cheese head. Oh, and I won't be offended if someone more active on the site wants to initiate this thread instead of using this one.
  7. I'll be there, driving in from somewhat nearby.
  8. Many Thanks, I have heard allot about Gary Solon. I never knew the circumstances though.
  9. I apologize for stepping on the conversation, but I wanted to ask 'walt526' or anyone who knows where I could find his comments on the highlighted info? Thanks
  10. No, I am sorry I do not know about the funding wait-list, but the list is somewhat short this year, correct. They will more than likely contact you, Penn is known for asking quite directly what your options are and from the offers you have received you have a very good bargaining position.
  11. Hey, congrats! I was wait-listed last year and I know at least 2 people were given offers that were on last years wait-list. IMO you have money in the bank, so to speak, and a tough decision btwn Mich and Penn. BTW, I was one of those who were rejected from Penn last Friday. Again, congrats and Best Of Luck.
  12. I received an official notfication from BU that my application had been reviewed favorably and that I was on their waitlist on the 21st of April? What does this mean? I don't know.
  13. Wow, i don't mean to be a contrarian, but on some of your points I feel that a few of you are being cynical. There is allot to be gained from developing work that is publishable, I do agree if all one wants is to have their name up in lights then yes it is foolish. But I do believe that many undergrads and more specifically the group that cares enough about economics to involved in this forum probably have something to share, also it can go a long way in helping you develop you PhD dissertation or some of the early research papers that you will be asked to write during your first few years of PhD study. I think that having developed an idea that is worthy of publication and then defending it is worthy of the effort that will be required int the form of confidence and the ability to self edit and good methods for handling criticisms, valid or not. That said, if you have the time then I say go for it, it is a good opportunity to learn non-standard methods that are not taught in the classrooms of your ordinary undergrad education. You will have the benefit of seeing how a professional does the job, and yes it does take a long time to get through the process. :)
  14. Do you have any particular faculty at your school who you really admire, and are you really interested in their work? Does any of their work parrallel or overlap any of your ideas? Ideas don't have to be well worked out, but reasonably thought out hunches, after you have thoroughly considered the question on your own you could begin to discuss it with this person. Or, you could find a class taught by this individual, and if there is a paper to be written, you are in luck as you have been granted the golden opportunity to make your pitch in writing. You never know what a well placed interesting idea will bring. If you are able, make sure you have the neccesary skills to complete he grunt work on your own, you will need to be independant and allow your supervisor to come in at the last moments and merely verify your methods and perhaps formalize the argument within your work. Also, take advantage of any undergrad research opportunities, honors programs and classes that teach you very specific skills for conducting research, whether it be analysis and game theory for an applied/ experimental research paper or an econometrics course that teaches programs like stata and matlab. Anyone can do it, and we all have something to share, so go for it.
  15. Hey, has everyone who had an open offer from Boston U formally notified them of their declination if they have accepted a different offer?????? Believe it or not, they have me still waiting. I verified this yesterday with Mr. Campolieto. Very nice guy by the way. Esto es muy importante por mi.
  16. While I agree with asquare, there are a few places, like mine, that are sheltered from the lovely door slamming, partygoing and foot stomping undergrads that grace us with our income. I happen to have found a good little spot for $780 plus $35 in electricity and parking at no added cost. Again, it is right on S Division 2nd bulding north of packard, its not in one of the surrounding neighborhoods that have allot of undergrads. So, sometims you can find little corners that allow you to have a relatively quiet place close to campus to reduce your walk during the cold winter months. Also, I have lived in the Kerry Town neighborhood and it was great, my landlord was a jerk, but the area is great(not all landlords are jerks in keryy town). Also, there is a bus, the "purple" bus that runs from Kerry Town to campus, it seems to be an express bus that connects allot of grad friendly areas to central campus quickly. This bus route is an awesome resource for anyone as it comes every 15 minutes and is hardly ever filled. Part of the problem with northwood is that sometimes during the day the bus system, Blue buses, get really busy as there are allot of undergrads that commute via the blue buses from North campus to central campus. On the housing links that I had previously posted or the one that asquare posted you can find allot of detailed information about zones for housing and bus routes (search AATA or magic bus to find out about city and unversty bussing). You can also find some student data as it is related to the housing zones. And, yes do not throw stones at any of the buildings on campus:). Some of the information on the university websites is not as easy as it could be to locate but if you include "ann arbor" and the thing that you are searching or you will find all the info that you can ever want, including renter ratings of buildings and land lords. Best of luck, there is allo ot do in ann arbor, there is even a 20 mile moutian biking route around the city, its really fun and somewhat technical in certain areas. If your comming in before mid May look me up and I can show you around if you like. Also, be careful about Wilson White, allot of their offerings are not well taken care of, this goes for allot of the property management companies who cater to the undegrad market. Don't take my word for it, do your research, the housing info is online and you can find your own answers.
  17. First, let me say congratulations Jeeves, well done and I wish you future success. I wanted to ask you this, within your proposals did you speak of the impact that your research would have in terms of public debate and discussion or in terms of government policy changes or both? I am now considering applying next year and I want to begin my process now, but I have not begun to read about the process thus I am still uninformed about it. Thanks for any help you can offer.
  18. Just go to University of Michigan Housing, or you could rent my place which is a stones throw from the ISR and Lorch, where you will spend most of you time. 526 S Division, a historic apartment building, its a good place and the maintenance guy Nick answers the phone when you call. PS, I don't need my place after April if anyone wants to spend the summer in Ann Arbor.
  19. Yea, I was hoping to have the opportunity but I contacted Kelly Quinn today and received this response: decision09, With the new acceptances that we have received today, I am sorry to tell you that it now does not appear possible that we will be able to admit you. We wish you the best in your graduate studies elsewhere. Best Wishes, Jere and Kelly I would have gone without funding, based on my admissions they would have been the strictly dominant option. Oh well.
  20. :hmm:hmmmm.......~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ not a bad idea!
  21. Holy crap man, that data file must taken a few snickers.
  22. Let's see if this displays correctly, I am not familiar with a divide by four rule but one needs to be careful with logit and binary explanatory variables, the simplest and best way to do this is using the average marginal effect (Cox, D. R., Snell, E. J. (1989). Analysis of binary data.) : $n^{-1}\displaystyle\sum_{i=1}^n {\left(G\left(\hat{\beta}_0 + \hat{\beta}_1x_{i,1}+\ldots+\hat{\beta}_{k-1}x_{i,k-1}+\hat{\beta}_k(c_{k}+1)\right)\;-\;G\left(\hat{\beta}_0 + \hat{\beta}_1 x_{i,1}+\ldots+\hat{\beta}_{k-1}x_{i,k-1}+\hat{\beta}_k c_{k}\right)\right)}$\symbolfootnote[2]{where $G(z)=\frac{exp(z)}{1+exp(z)}$ is the CDF from the logistic function.} OK, so it does not but if you put it in a latex editor it should display correctly. All it says is to calculate the predicted values using the binary variable in question set to 1 and then calculate the predicted values with the binary variable set to 0, take the difference and then compute the mean of this: you get the average partial effect. I hope I did not misinterpret something you did 'untitled'. If so, all apologies.
