  6. In 1960, the mean baseball salary was $50,000 with a standard deviation of $10,000. Today, the mean salary is $2,000,000, with a standard deviation of $500,000. In 1960, Clete Boyer, the third baseman for the World Champion New York Yankees, made $30,000. What would he earn at today's salaries? $1,938,785 $1,000,000 $750,000 $800,000 $3,000,000 none of the above
  7. The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a local newspaper. "Five years ago, we residents of Morgantown voted to keep the publicly owned piece of land known as Scott Woods in a natural, undeveloped state. Our thinking was that, if no shopping centers or houses were built there, Scott Woods would continue to benefit our community as natural parkland. But now that our town planning committee wants to purchase the land and build a school there, we should reconsider this issue. If the land becomes a school site, no shopping centers or houses can be built there, and substantial acreage would probably be devoted to athletic fields. There would be no better use of land in our community than this, since a large majority of our children participate in sports, and Scott Woods would continue to benefit our community as natural parkland." The argument that there would be no better use for the Scott Woods as a place for school is not entirely logical convincing since it ignores certain crucial assumptions. First and foremost, there is no solid evidence for which the location of the natural Scott Woods land should be reconsidered for a school site. There may be some other areas in the Morgantown where this school may be built, and thus the Scott Woods would remain as a natural land, from which the entire community should benefit. Building a school on this public place would only restrict its initial usage, and consequently provide advantages for a limited number of people, such as the scholar for instance. Moreover, even if this public place would be devoted to school, a deeper analysis should be made in order to reveal the percentile distribution of the Morgantown population. This analysis would be useful to observe how many people are there scholars and consequently decide whether the land should be devoted to that school or not. Second, the author of the argument mentions that if the Scott Woods public place becomes a site for a school then substantial acreage would be devoted to athletic fields. This may not be necessarily true since, no evidence is presented within the argument that shows how many scholars are devoted to sports and how many are not. A public school with a substantial acreage devoted to athletic fields would most likely result in an increase taxes payment for the Morgantown’s residents. In addition, the author states that the building of shopping centers or houses may benefit more from the community than the construction of a public school. Even if five years ago, the residents of Morgantown voted to keep the Scott Woods land in an undeveloped state, things may change over years, and thus a new analysis should be made in order to see which destination is most fruitful for the land nowadays. Last but not least, the author conclusion "there would be no better use of land in our community than this...""is easily arguable. The destruction of Scott Woods for the purpose of building a school would not only affect the ambience of Morgantown, it would affect who would and would not be able to utilize the space. If the residents as a whole voted to keep Scott Woods in an undeveloped state, this argument will not sway their decision. The use of the land for a school will probably benefit even fewer people than a shopping center would. The whole purpose of the vote was to keep the land as an asset for everyone. The only way to do this is to keep it in an undeveloped state. Using the land for a school does not accomplish this. To sum up, the argument might be strengthen if the author would provide more evidence about the Morgantown population distribution, would present the nowadays scenario compared to the one five years ago that stayed on the Morgantown’ residents decision to keep the Scott Woods in the natural state and present a comparative study of the benefits from both the construction of a school or a shopping center / houses from the perspective of taxes and revenues.
