  1. I'm considering a marketing (CB) PhD and I'm married. Both my wife and I are trying to determine what life would look like if I were to enter the program. - How many hours per week do you commit to the program? Of course it will vary, so feel to provide hours for an easy, average, and difficult week. - How many journal articles are you reading per week? Thanks for your feedback!
  2. You have to love the subject your're doing a PhD in. If you don't love it then it will be very hard to have a successful career in academia. How will you motivate yourself to pick up those next ten journal articles and stay up all night reading them when you don't even have a passion for the subject? There won't be anyone forcing you to do anything, so you need to be self motivated (which I believe comes partially from your passion towards the subject). Typically, successful PhD students and professors love to think about new and intersting concepts within their specialization. If spending every day thinking about new accounting theories sounds boring, then don't even contemplate a PhD.
  3. Queen's has a very good Master of Science (management) program that would be perfectly suited to subsequent doctoral studies. Sauder ranks very highly as well and would be my choice since I would prefer living in Vancouver, BC over Kingston, ON (Queen's). I'm not sure if these schools offer these research oriented master's degrees in Operations, but also check out University of Toronto (Rotman) and University of Manitoba (Asper). Queen's, Sauder, and Rotman would be very competitive. Asper would be less competitive, but also less likely to provide funding. I don't think there would be any discrimination with admitting foreign applications, so ensure your application is competitive and hope for the best.
  4. No other marketing professor with a strong enough publication record. If I can't leverage the school's name to find a good placement, then I will place additional emphasis on the reputation and track record of my supervisor.
  5. hegequant, I was already in a PhD program and have been through that process before. I have some top-tier connections in the academia world, so I'm not overly concerned. I was going to follow my supervisor and was already "soft accepted" into Canada's first/second best marketing PhD program. So your wife just went along with it, no real concerns?
  6. A couple years ago I got accepted into a marketing PhD program at a decent school in Canada. However, after only one semester into the program, my supervisor informed me that she accepted an offer at a different school. Since there was no other supervisor who was strong enough, I left academia and went into industry. I took my MBA and went into the oil and gas industry, where I now find myself making huge (well into six figures) money, but at a boring job. Has anyone else taken the plunge after securing a lucrative job in industry? What was your thought process on rationalizing the decision to yourself? My wife is very happy now that I am no longer a student, so she would be furious if I told her that I want to be a poor student again (for another 4-5 years). Basically, I need to make a strong case. We are planning to have kids soon, so that doesn’t help either. Going directly from my MBA into the PhD program seemed a lot easier because I didn't have a definite opportunity cost that I could take into consideration (and we weren't use to a high standard of living). Sometimes I think I have the mentality that the grass is always greener on the other side, so it would be particularly helpful to hear from anyone who left industry to pursue a PhD, and then later regretted losing their industry job. I’m looking for thoughts, ideas, and suggestions from people who have faced similar circumstances.
  7. I know the UBC PhD (marketing) program is incredibly competitive. I applied there with a 680 GMAT, but my previous supervisor just got hired there. She is writing a LOR for me, so in a couple weeks I will be able to speak to the importance of one's referees. As stated above, hopefully some strong LOR can overcome small deficiencies in my profile. BTW, I have been told several times that UBC won't even look at applicants with a GMAT lower than 680. However, they don't state this on the website.
  8. I was already in a marketing (CB) PhD program, but my supervisor took another job. I now applied to UBC and University of Alberta.
  9. In what specialization do you want to do your PhD? You will likely need a 700 GMAT to be taken seriously
  10. Why on earth would you want a law degree and a PhD in finance? Those are completely different careers. You won't get into a good PhD program unless you can show that you are serious about academic research and a career in academia. Wanting to do a law degree demonstrates just the opposite and implies that you are confused.
  11. For the people who have been through a year+ in their programs, do you now find it easier to generate quality ideas compared to when you were just entering the program?
  12. Now that I'm actually in the program, I thought it would be an appropriate time to bump this thread. What strategies do you use to come up with new research ideas? Many of my ideas in marketing have come from my observations, but I don't want to rely solely on my observations.
  13. The course I took was in a classroom, so I don't know anything about online programs. Sorry.
  14. The situation described by possible phd is similar to the one at my school. Acceptance in the marketing program is 0% sometimes since there aren't any students who professors are interested in supervising. By no means will a good school look to fill seats in a program that is a cost (PhD) rather than profit (MBA).
  15. We cant make suggestions on what to do in future attempts if we don't know the approach you took in the past
  16. Don't use people from industry as references
  17. It certainly isn't required - or in some cases even encouraged - but if you can get a supervisor interested in you it can make you stand out more than any other part of your application
  18. Do you plan to be an academic in Australia? Hopefully you aren't planning to get a position in North America.
  19. At my school, first year students have a cubicle and second year+ students share an office with one other person.
  20. Do you really want to choose your PhD program based on who has the lowest admission standards? I strongly suggest you re-evaluate that decision. The four year program will determine, to a large extent, the rest of your professional life.
  21. If you're not interested in quant then dont even consider it, regardless of your background. Behavioural seems to be your only choice if that's what you like. Talk to some schools and find out what psyc courses are necessary. Follow your passion!
  22. Great score! Why are you only applying to Dalhousie? Do you not have any work experience?
