  1. So I'm 99.9 percent sure I will be attending. I was just wondering when looking for apartments are there certain areas to avoid. I plan on coming down after graduation to see them, but it would help narrow my search.
  2. For what it is worth I'm and undergrad at state. So I might be able to answer some questions.
  3. Just wondering who is planning on visiting OSU on the 31rst and 1rst? I will probably driving myself down, since it is only a four hour drive. So if anyone is between East Lansing and Columbus we could possibly carpool.
  4. I just found out I got funding today :). I was wondering if or when OSU will have a visitation day, and in your opinion how should we spend our time visiting to determine if OSU is the best place for us.
  5. So I received an offer for admissions from OSU today. However, the letter didn't mention anything about funding, does that mean I didn't get any, or should I look or check else where?
  6. When mentioning why you want to attend University X should you mention a professor you find interesting on their faculty? I've heard this can backfire. Obviously don't say you want to work with their top person when they likely don't advise students as you can look ignorant. What did those of you who made it to grad school do?
  7. Are you referring to the earlier post about my undergrad institution. I go to Michigan State, hence the uncreative profile name. Its ranked 79th by US news for undergrad and 31 for grad econ. No its not Ivy league, but we have sent people to great programs recently; we sent one student to Standford last year, not that I plan on getting in there.
  8. I'm a little concerned as they don't seem to match my interest (labor). Although they do claim to be good in development something I find interesting, and I know their placements have been stellar recently.
  9. MSU is ranked 31 for econ phd, its a decent undergrad institution.
  10. Type of Undergrad: B.S. Economics with Additional Major in Math Undergrad GPA:3.8/4 Type of Grad:Currently taking Microtheory GRE: 800Q 620V 4.5AWA Math Courses: Calc 1-2(3.5) Calc 3 (4.0) Linear Algebra (3.5) Abstract Algebra (3.5) Calc based stats (3.5) Real and Complex Analysis (4.0) Currently in calc 4 Overall GPA 3.69 (worried about all the 3.5s I always was near the threshold but due to silly errors fell short.) Econ Courses: General Undergrad Courses, but I took advanced macro and micro if that matters. ( doubt it does as the math level was not that different from Intermediate), econometrics was only 3.5 3.93/4 Letters of Recommendation: 1 from senior thesis adviser, 1 from advanced micro class, 1 from real and complex analysis prof and possibly 1 from microtheory prof (depends on class performance, but he believes I should finish in top half of class) Research Experience: Senior thesis on the employment effects of the Michigan Film tax Credit received 4.0 Teaching Experience: 2 years as a teachers assistant. Helped students and graded papers Research Interests:Labor Applying for: MIT, Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin, MSU, Cornell, Brown, Boston College, Virginia, Duke, Illinois and Ohio state. I plan on adding more I know obviously MIT is a reach and have no real chance but its better to probe than wonder what might have been. My profs recommend I apply between 20-40 range. They feel best schools in big ten are possible, but not very likely. I'm looking for some slightly lower ranked schools as a safety so suggestions would be helpful. I'm hoping to stay in the midwest or east coast due to personal reasons.
  11. I was wondering how specific you should be with your interest. I am interested in Labor economics, but feel like I like other areas enough to change my mind. After reading an earlier post I plan to write my paragraph about my specific interests using questions. Such as I am interested in studying the question of how education impacts wage? After that I don't know what to say. Should I just say why Im interested in Labor or give some examples of things I might like to study ( I feel the latter is presumptuous since I have yet to make it through the first year even). The example I have found on line seems quite specific so any help would be appreciated. Could you maybe give me an example of what you said about your interest, feel free to just summarize. Statement of Purpose: Sample PhD Economics SOP
  12. Doctoral Stream MA program Students admitted to the Doctoral Stream MA (but not the Regular Stream) receive the same financial support as a PhD student, namely at least $15,000 plus tuition and incidental fees (including UHIP expenses for international students) for their eight month full-time program. This minimum funding support package is composed of earnings from research and teaching assistantships, University of Toronto Fellowships (UTF) and any external scholarships the student may have. Students must work as a teaching assistantship and/or research assistant or forfeit that portion of the funding package. Students may lose their funding if they fail to maintain good standing in their program. Teaching assistantships may be assigned to either the St. George Campus or to the University of Toronto at Mississauga Campus. In the event that a student is assigned to the UTM campus an intercampus bus shuttle is provided and cost of tickets reimbursed by UTM. Research assistantships may be available during the fall and winter terms through individual faculty members engaged in research projects. The Department does not appoint research assistants directly; they are usually chosen by individual faculty members.
  13. Actually when you apply to Toronto you only apply to a masters program, but there are 2 programs phd track and plain masters. If you get accepted to the PHD and pass all your first year stuff fine you can just move on to the second year of courses. They also fund the PHD track.
  14. How would you rank the university of Toronto? I am looking to apply to econ grad schools this fall and have been considering Toronto. It's somewhat close to home which I view as a plus, but I don't know much about it. According to econphd.net's rankings it had a strength in Trade and Development Rankings: Trade & Development, but has this changed. I am interested in Trade so this is a plus for me. Also as a US citizen would my funding possibilities be lower? Does anyone have an inside view they would care to share?
