  1. Thanks everyone for the help. There is one more thing that i wanted to ask. Is iot true that US universities especially the good ones focus mostly on quant instead of CB? Also can someone refer some good schools with CB.
  2. Dear All, Over the past few months, I've come across many people emphasizing importance of math and especially calculus for admission into the PhD Marketing program in US. I don't have Calculus I/II/III on my degree but have studied it online and and will get an online signature track certificate from UPenn. my question is that is Cal I enough or Cal II/III are also important: important to the degree that they make a difference in admissions.
  3. Dear all, I've heard a lot of people say that the courses you have on your undergrad transcript have a lot to do with you chances to get into a good PHD Marketing program. So, Calculus Series is required if you are going for PHD Marketing in quantitative and Psychology and Sociology are required for Consumer Behavior. Can someone experienced provide everyone on this forum with a good list of which courses are required for each area i.e quant and CB? Thanks in advance.
  4. This is a very basic question. when we have sq. root of x2, then we (by law) first square the x and then apply the root. But up till now, I have been dealing with this situation differently. When I see sqrt(x2), I turn the sq. root sign to 1/2 and multiply it with the square on the x. Both the 2s in the numerator and denominators cancel out. But we all know that this is not the right way. My question is WHY? Is it PEMDAS? or something else....
  5. Ok thanks. I think for rice I need to upgrade my profile.
  6. no further takers... I just want to know whether I apply to rice with my current profile? What are the chances?
  7. What I mean is that in US universities, professors usually stress on the quantitative research when it comes to Marketing.
  8. Hi. Does someone know how competitive RICE's PhD Marketing program is? A number of their professors seem to have CB research interest (which is unusual of US). I have done MBA (4.0 CGPA), BBAIT (3.85 CGPA) GRE 1280 (90th V, 60th Q :torn: ), wroking as a teacher in Pakistan teacheing graduate level marketing (about 1.5 yr experience). No published research but had research project in masters, not a strong math background but taking a number of math courses online (calculus, liner algebra, game theory) with no credit hourse but with probably a course completion certificate.. Second I am interested in viral marketing and none of the professors there have it on their CVs. But I talked to one of the students in RICE and she said that my specific area of interest in marketing is not a factor (at least not a big factor) in admission decision. Also what are some good universities in US that fit my current profile? Rrgards,
  9. But when I multiply the 2 and 1/2 (in exponents) both the twos are cancelled out so we never touch -3. So before we reach the -ve number, sq. root is cancelled... isn't it?
  10. lil2011 thanks for the answer. But this is what i needed to ask that why am i not eligible to bring out -3 as you said?
  11. Lets say we have Sqrt[(-3)^2] if i solve it the way i know i'll get -3. But recently I was watching a math video online and it said that the solution would be +3. Why is that? I must add that the way I solve this expression is as follows. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/attachments/gre-math/6611-very-simple-consept-bugging-me-untitled.jpg Is this the wrong way of solving the square root? Please help Regards
  12. inclusive means both first and last
  13. Toss a coin for 12 times. What is the probability of getting exactly 7 heads.
  14. ups123 and anap. thank you for the appreciation. Its basically funny but I didn't prepare much for the TOEFL exam. Basically my education from KG to university level had been in english. Therefore, I didn't need much preparation. Though I did solve some exercises (Cambridge) for reading and listening, but never touched a TOEFL book/exercise for the rest of the two. But still I'll give you some useful tips. I hope you must be conversant by now with the paper pattern (its imperative). reading - You must read articles from different magazines. An online website named aldaily.com is a good source for such articles. listening - movies, movies, movies, and movies :) - this was my secret (I'm serious) speaking - my speaking score was not super high but still i can suggest that listening a couple of speaking exercises for TOEFL on the internet helps writing - just try to learn some basic grammatical rules and during exam try to use simple language and avoid short sentences. Thats it :proud: Gook Luck !!!
  15. Got the result. Reading 29 Listening 27 Speaking 24 Writing 27 Not happy with the speaking. But still good enough for most BSchools.
  16. I gave my TOEFL on Sept 8, 2012 and haven't yet received the scores? TOEFL website says that my expected date of reporting is 18th of September. Is there an email for TOEFL where I can write them?????
  17. From the following courses, which should I opt to make my profile attractive (even for quant). These are available as certificate courses in my country and are very much affordable. Statistics and Probability Research Methods Elementary mathematics Calculus and Analytical Geometry Discrete Math Calculus of Multivariable Differential Eq Linear Algebra Operational Research Numerical Analysis
  18. well stagename i am more leaned towards qualitative but what I've heard is that most universities (US) also emphasize strong quantitative backgroud even for CB. Also has any one any idea whether US universities consider international students for fellowships. Or whether they give equal or less weightage to international students while deciding on fellowships.
  19. The only problem I see is my GRE quant and I have plans to set it right.
