  1. what about the schools i mentioned?
  2. The thing is UCL is great but some of the top guys arent taking students this year and they were some of my top choices. So now i want to apply and start from scratch. I have 3 letters of recommendation and i will try getting one from a professor at UCL as well. So what schools should i target? Moreover i also want to apply to the double phd programs in economics and public policy but i need target schools. For pure economics i was looking at Georgetown, NYU, Vanderbilt and Brown and for the double phd Stanford and Michigan.
  3. Hello guys, I am studying in a top 5 PhD program(UCL) in England and i am not satisfied with the research here. I got into Oxford last year but did not get any funding so could not attend. I am thinking about applying to the US and start from scratch. Please help me identify target schools, my profile is below: MPhil/Mres Economics(UCL) with a pass. I had a 65 average which was one of the best in my class since this is PhD coursework and extremely difficult to score high marks in. MSc Macroeconomic Policy and Financial Markets(2008) Graduated with an average of 8.0/10 (distinction). Top grades in monetary theory, macroeconomics and thesis. BA university of Toronto. Here is where the problem lies. I had a very weak undergrad, my average was a 3.0 since i had a lot of personal problems. First year GPA 3.7(top grades in calculus 1,2, linear algebra) but struggled with issues in second and third year. GRE 90% percentile math, 4.5/6 analytical References: 4,5 top people Publications: 1 in a mediocre journal I do not know which US schools i can apply to. I am very confused. Can someone help me identify my targets? I am interested in Economic Theory.
  4. Hello, I was browsing URCH forum to get some help regarding the economics phd interview at Cambridge. A potential supervisor at Cambridge has contacted me to meet up for 30-40 minutes to discuss my research. His exact words are: The graduate office asked me to do this as early as possible, since you have applied for funding with specific deadlines. The point of the interview is mostly to meet you and go over your application, essentially a way to get know each other and see if we can work together if you were offered a place at the PhD programme, but also explore who else could supervise you apart from me. I am pretty confused as to what this means? Is this a casual interview as the department secretary told me that we will only talk about my research or will the interviewer grill me? How can I prepare well for it? Your help would be appreciated.
  5. Hey i got my final average today and i was happy to find out i graduated with a 8.0, which is a distinction. I have two strong references..given all the information what would you say i do next?
  6. I know a professor at BGSE who did his masters and mba from unheard of universities in Spain and he went to Chicago for his PhD. Obviously i know only the famous universities in Spain and he wasn't from one of them..so i guess if you do well from anywhere you can aim for a top school. However i am very confused about grading..what would you deem as a top notch grade in Spain because it is veryyy hard to score at UPf!
  7. I was in the macroeconomic policy side and i know some people who got into TSE, Warwick and Arizona..i don't think Int`l trade is a good stepping stone for a PhD though the course work isn't that rigorous. try to get into Macro policy or economics. It also depends on your background..
  8. well i graduated from that program this year..why don't you tell me more about your background and then i can better guide you..I know some kids who got in TSE, Warwick, Arizona. It is a professional program though, most of the kids who enter are trying to get a job in the macro sector after the degree.
  9. i know right! 7.5 was really hard to achieve and i was number 4 out of 14 people in my class..my letter's are very good actually because the professor's like my approach and knowing my background they saw me working very hard..i might end up with a 7.8, because my thesis is pretty good and i am expecting a high grade on it. I am planning on going to summer school at LSE next summer and taking econometrics. Hopefully i will apply next fall and this year i am just boosting my profile..any more suggestions?
  10. i had cal 1,2,linear algebra, probability theory, geometery-A's and calc 3, advanced linear algebra-B+ but i messed up advanced calc and stats-C+..but i was a TA for stat's since i was topping my class going into the exam and ended up with a C+ same with advanced calc..and my prof for stats has written the fact that i was a TA for him for stats which was due to my excellent background etc etc..i could do a math masters from kings, who have already offered me a place for 2011...would that improve my shot at top 20 or will my bad undergrad+C+ in masters metrics destroy all that?
  11. Hello everyone, I wanted some quick advice regarding PhD admissions for fall 2011 or 2012. I have a weak undergraduate record, extenuating circumstances, ended up with 3.1 in Econ major math minor. My econ gpa was 3.2 while math was higher at 3.3 but that did not include courses in real analysis. Then this past year I did a master in macroeconomic policy from UPF and graduated with 7.7/10. I have all A- and A’s which I got due to working very very very very hard. However I fell sick before my econometrics exam and ended up with a C+ but I did get an A on an advanced time series course. This year I am a researcher in a developing world country and I am working with the central bank. Now my question is: I can either go back and do a master in economics from Toulouse or UPF or do a Masters in Mathematics from some other school, which is better? I’ve heard that with my background I should not even think about a PhD while others have said that if I do a second master’s its will show commitment and dedication. Some people have also said that doing a 2nd master’s looks bad on your profile, hence I am very confused as to what course of action to take. Time is not a problem since I am 22 at the moment. I am not aiming for top 20 US, maybe something in the 30ish will be great. I had an offer from Warwick this year but I did not take it as they did not give me any aid. Ideally I would like to go to john Hopkins, Georgetown, Cornell or UCLA? Caltech. Realistically speaking should I still be aiming for these schools or drop the idea? My GRE is 800Q and 4.5A
