Totally agree and earlier I stated that may be the label of decipline would be different(or even emerged in other deciplines). Still I believe some parts are unique, such as knowledge management. the point is that IS is a context for other managerial studies, a context which is unique. sticking to topic, I wanted to point this out that even if someone graduate from an IS department and hypothetically 5 years later there is no IS department in US , still academic jobs are availabe although IS graduates may work in a marketting or accounting program

With all due respect , I strongly disagree. I do not know what your major is, but shifting from CS approach to a more humanistic nature was a triumph for IS. it definitely gives MIS an independent and unique position as an academic field. I am not talking about what operational units of companies want, I am talking about what academia and industrial labs need. I do not think judging IS based on some tier 3 schools decisions to eliminate their IS program would be wise. As I wrote before there are evolving hot topics in IS which are far more attractive than traditional issues in marketting or finance. concepts of e-trust, e-branding or e- ethics in addition to social networks design or web-based marketting issues are still attractive. I hope to see more professional comments about IS.

I think to judge on the future of MIS we should take research demand of the field into consideration. The context of MIS is changing. traditionaly it was concerned with developing IS es taylored for managerial uses. it conceptually was exactly the same orientation of CS decipline. now, psychological and behavioral aspects of ISes is developing.as an example it even has intercepts with marketting area in E-commerce. undoubtedly, the need for studies in the unique nature of IS context will not deteriorate. the concepts in IS decipline is evolving rapidly even more rapid than traditional deciplines of management. 5 yrs ago no one was even talking about social networks or knowledge creation but indeed they are unique subjects of IS field now. current trend is due to fast exchange of IS from CS views to more engagement in managerial nature. this means it takes time to start a new era in IS. but still that's the demand for research which make a decipline popular and I do not think this need is declining, may be the label will be different though

interview invitation form UArk, any suggestions?
tahahavakhor replied to tahahavakhor's topic in PhD in Business
just passed the interview. it started with predictable questions: why to choose PhD ? Why IS concentration? Why UoArk? these were the first interviewer's questions(the director of the program) then another professor asked me: what specifically I would do in phd and what are my research focus? what tools can I use in research? and the last question was kind of suprising by another professor: when you are so young, why do you think PhD is the true path for you? have you considered working in industry?(I thought it's a plus for me when Im 24 , but I think that they have got skeptical about my age and my decisions!) what do you think guys? the latter professor has made me so pessimistic about their verdict. -
