  1. so whats the deal with skype interviews? are they supposed to be video or do some schools just do voice? also any interesting stories anyone have of them?
  2. yes i also do think that contacting is beneficial and sometimes it can even prompt the school to make you a better offer than normal if they are determined to have you join them. however, the crucial thing in my opinion would be the timing of the inquiry. perhaps its too early in the process at the moment. but early march probably warrants such a move.
  3. I suspect that Vtech's deadline has passed, but you may be right. Apart from a lesser probability for fin. aid, you also have to consider that schools which such deadlines often conduct rolling admissions and applicants who submit their apps early also get considered first. so i would encourage you to submit the app in the next week or so!
  4. ryanivans, welcome to the forum. i would encourage you to stick around rather than take the first flight out when you are done. there is a very small 'phd in business' community around the net and so its beneficial to keep forums like these going. regarding your query, do note the first week of February has just finished. it is rare to get a final offer so soon. lots of factors need to be finalized, not the least of which is financial aid. schools spend a lot of time figuring out how much funding to offer in conjunction with the available number of seats. so be patient and relish in the fact that you have a very good indication from this school.
  5. dude, this topic has been discussed a lot already. if the school has said business casual then common sense would suggest that is okay. if you have no indications just go professional. treat it as a job interview.
  6. Agreed. I just felt that maybe this thread should be reserved for official results only so that people can come and quickly check up on it without having to go through 10 pages of 'non-results'. Oh well, all is good. Keep it up!
  7. I have to agree with some of the sentiments expressed by Behavioral about the type of information that bounces about here and there. While I really appreciate phdhope's efforts in keeping everyone informed, I think it is a bit counterproductive to have 10 pages in the "Official 2011 Admissions Results" thread that only contain rumors, predictions or "i heard my friend of a friend had an interview at..." type comments. I mean suppose a guy comes into this forum and sees 10 pages in the results thread he might faint :p but seriously, do all this in the "Official Speculation Thread." It would be nice if everyone only posts here if they have a result to report, or an interview that they gave. Information coming through a third party is rarely to be relied upon. Be wary of misinformation.
  8. 750+ for a decent program? either your definition of decent is 'the best program one can go to' or there are some programs on the moon which have an average accepted gmat score of 795, thus making the decent programs on earth less than decent overall.
  9. I honestly cannot see many 'good' schools using such a formula to screen out applicants. Factors such as quality of undergrad, field of study, possible graduate degree with quite different (better) GPA etc...The factors are too much to expect a school to use something like this. Ethically speaking too, when an applicant pays an application fee he or she expects that it would go through the same review process as the others. If there is such a cutoff, the applicant should be made aware of this. But again, this would only happen in an ideal world. While I agree that certain schools do use such a formula, since I came across one school which mentioned such a formula on their website, I would still say a lot probably do not especially considering the fact that many schools categorically deny using any minimum cutoff measures.
  10. The first step would be do as well as you can on the GRE. I am assuming you have not taken it since you did not mention it at all. There are ways of countering a low GPA. Do exceptionally well on the standardized tests to showcase that you have the intellectual capacity to pursue graduate education. Secondly, if you eventually plan on getting a doctorate, start to formulate some research goals which you can inform of during the admissions cycle. You have to make sure you have a statement of purpose which shows clear intent and motivation. If you had certain circumstances which led to your 2.2 GPA then you have to articulate them in such a way which shows that you have moved on and matured into a student who is ready to tackle the necessary challenges of a graduate degree. Your work exp. will help you, but only if you can really showcase specific examples from projects you have worked on which are related to topics you want to explore as an academic researcher. Its all about presenting your case in the best manner possible, and of course doing well on the GRE will aide in removing doubts about your intellectual ability.
  11. Yes this seems to be normal as I also did not receive any sort of confirmation email. However, the fact that it says submitted on the app login page and the presence of your receipt for the app fee should suffice as a form of confirmation.
  12. I believe that some of the very top schools agree to finance your MBA through a combination of loans and grants if you gain admission. When I was applying three years ago this used to be the case regardless of national identity. Hence I dont think nationality is a factor for their 'need-based' merit awards and loans which are in partnership with a certain bank. Hence, at the very top schools atleast, I do believe it is an option for internationals. The most attractive financial aid package one can get, in my opinion, is a graduate research assistantship. These are again available competitively at some top private institutions and are more readily available at public schools, even for an MBA candidate. These will provide partial or full tuition grants coupled with a stipend for living expenses in exchange for the student working 10 to 20 hours per week. Agian, these are open to both domestic and international candidates. Applying for loans on an independent basis, i.e. for those loans which are not part of the financial aid package presented by a school, is definitely more difficult for internationals. This also is a negative factor when applying for your F-1 since you need to show you presently have the resources (personal + school) to finance your education. Hence, usually the best bet for internationals is to rely on the school solely for the aid. I dont know how accurate I am with this, but its all that I gathered when I was applying.
  13. i dont see the point in starting a thread based on just 'hype' in order to create more 'hype'. i dont think its fruitful to start something like this unless you have some concrete information to share. better change the topic to Official 2011 Admissions Hype Thread.
  14. while my knowledge of your field is limited, I will attempt to give you some general advice. firstly, if you are effectively able to establish some sort of dialogue with faculty at lower ranked schools and converse about your research interests then it would help you as they will see you a bit differently then the traditional applicant pool who likely have better scores than yours. secondly, where ever you apply, try to have a very very well defined statement of purposes that highlights your research and teaching accomplishments. If you are able to get advice from a very good essay writer, then work with him or her to develop a paragraph where you can effectively address your lower score and why you feel it does not reflect your true potential. Mind you, this is very tough to do, so at best give it an attempt and then evaluate whether you should include it or not. Thirdly, why can you not retake the GRE. I believe some lower ranked programs have deadlines in feb 1, if you think you can prepare and get that verbal score above 400 and the quant one above 650 then it will help you immensely. also im not sure why you found the quant section drastically different from the books. perhaps you should enroll in a formal course and see if it helps you. i cant really recommend univs for engineering, but i suspect the ones you have selected should be more or less appropriate. also it might be better to wait a year, get the gre up, talk to professors over the summer and get an inside track to a program.
  15. That is kind of strange. I can tell you that when i applied to Columbia's MBA program a couple of years back I did receive a confirmation email (i just searched my inbox!). Perhaps someone on this forum who has applied this year to the PhD Program can give you a better perspective. However, I would not worry too much if you have double checked that the email address in the form is correct and if it does say 'submitted' when you log in. It is possible that the system sends the app directly to the PhD Program instead of initiating an automatic reply. Hence you might get one after the staff returns from their break. To be doubly sure just shoot them an email if you haven't already.
  16. i would imagine that each university does send out atleast one email confirming that the electronic application was successfully received. Usually this happens instantly when you hit the submit button and pay your fee. Did you receive such an email? If not then it throws open the possibility that you entered an incorrect email address into the form. Also check your spam folder.
  17. as rsaylors mentioned, the option to have a paper+electronic or just electronic delivery is only for how you want the score delivered to yourself. you have absolutely no control over how the school gets them. its between pearson and the school.
  18. I would suggest during practice tests you figure out in which sections your weaknesses are. Then work on correcting your grammar from the ground up, perhaps take a few english language courses. Also you might want to post this in the gmat forum, this one is for admissions related stuff.
