  1. NYU is done? Any idea? I saw waitlists in GC.
  2. It depends on your aims. If you want to go to USA after M2, I do not recommend TSE.Why? Let me clarify, TSE does not advertise itself as being a feeder school to top programs in the USA. Instead, they claim that TSE's program is equivalent to USA programs in quality etc. Check CEMFI, it is not that well known, but it has an amazing placement record. There are many other good programs with small class size where you can interact with professors.
  3. There is no link on stanford's online application site regarding decisions? Guys, would you mind telling how did you find out decision?
  4. Classes consist of 50-60 people.(core courses) You learn nothing in the lectures. Teaching quality converges to zero. It's not a joke. The reason of this stems from two fact. 1. class size, 2. (most)professors here don't care about teaching.(some of them are best researchers). Do not come here to get good grades and good recommendation letters if you are not a machine who can deal with everything by oneself and do not care about the inefficient and competitve environment. Being successful is hard here. it is not because of the level of coursework ,but mainly because of the inefficient system, and disorganization. If you come here eventually, you will be surprised by the fact that no one gives you information about anything unless you are forced them to do so. I'm leaving TSE next year, moving to USA for phd. Many people I know are not content with their final decision of coming to TSE. Moreover, If you cannot speak french, this will create a problem in dealing with administrative issues outside the school. Most professors have strong french accent. So, be prepared!
  5. Tse is not that good, System here sucks. I would recommend you not to come Toulouse.

Other: RESULTS: Attending: Minnesota :) Acceptances: Toulouse M2(ecomath)($$), UBC MA($$), CEMFI($$), Waitlists: UCLA(rej), Uminnesota($$,eventually) Rejections: Yale, MIT, Princeton, Columbia, NYU, Northwestern(on hold, rej afterwards), Upenn, JHU Comments: (i) I do not know which school got which GRE score as I rescored my AW, and ETS did not send my second scores to some places.(UCLA got my first try scores). In the nutshell, I can say that GRE destroyed me completely. First, my classmate with less stellar math grades, similar econ grades got into places where I was wait-listed. In such a case, it is important to make yourself known to DGS. After an inquiry regarding my rejection, UMN put me on short-list for admission(they said they had made a clerical mistake). Northwestern put my application on hold for a while although I was rejected eventually. So, GRE myth is true in some sense. (ii) For internationals, having a master's degree is very important. This is what I heard from the ad-com member working at Top10 after his seminar. (iii) Initially, my plan was to apply only top places and master programs in order to have a chance to strengthen my profile for the next cycle. However, this process turns out to be too long and stressful. For this reason, I avoided attending master program to improve my profile.
  7. This is not my thought. I think someone, who is the same position as Costaricanecon, asked director about his/her prospects if zhe performs well. I have read this today in one of the CEMFI threads. Thus, it is not a fact, but just another observation to take into account. Now, let me add my insights about this issue. One of my friends got acceptance from CEMFI, and our adviser(respected labor economist in my country) said CEMFI has great macro, metrics faculty and strongly recommended the program.
  8. I am not sure ,but as far as I remember one of TM'ers wrote that top students at CEMFI "invariably" go to the top USA Ph.d programs.Maybe, you can use search function to get more information about CEMFI. I really do not know anything about ITAM. Good luck!
  9. Finally, I have reached a decision. I'm going to Minnesota.
  10. Institution: UMinnesota Program: Ph.D. Economics Decision: accepted from the waitlist Funding: TA Notification date: April 12 Notified through: E-mail Posted on GC: No Comments:
  11. Of course, I do not base my entire decision on this, but it plays a minor role in my decision process. I have already doubts regarding UMN(faculty balance). After seeing that my adviser(UMN graduate) shared the same thoughts on UMN program, I am a little bit confused.
  12. My primary aim is to stay in the USA or go to Europe or China(very interesting country and culture). Regarding your point, I know UMN is very good at macro(I also have some doubts after seeing that Kehoe,Kocherlakota have left, and there is a rumour that Chari may leave), and places their students well. Aside from placements, UMN has very stimulating environment for macro research, but I have doubts regarding other fields. I disagree with you regarding the job market condition in Turkey. Recently, we see rise in the number of people going to top 10 USA schools(especially NYU, Upenn). Moreover, most of them are interested in micro theory. As the USA market for theory is very competitive and few slots available for theory guys, these guys flow into domestic market, which increases competition. To get a well paid job(theory) at top private research universities is not very easy nowadays. I do not consider myself as an expert on this issue, but it mostly reflects what my adviser said in regard to job market. By the way, I know that with UMN phd degree I would not have problem in finding a job in Turkey.
  13. You're in dire straits :). My case is also a little bit complicated. My ex-girl friend got acceptance from UMN, and I do not want to be in the same school with her right now. This also complicates my decision.
  14. Thanks for comments. I heard that the program at Toulouse is very rigorous. So, If I decide to attend TSE, I know it will be hard. Moreover, many of the top performers at TSE choose to stay at TSE for the Ph.D.. Would you mind shedding light upon this? I take this as a sign of satisfaction with the program. This is the thing complicating my decision.
  15. Thanks for comments. I do not think it is unethical as this scholarship is not actually supposed to be given to doctoral candidates. It only covers M2. I heard that accepting any funding beyond eiffel would be a problem if one wants to leave. Conger, asianecon(TMers) and a person I know left after M2.Of course, I am not sure about that. Is there anyone who can shed light upon this? Minnesota seems to be unbalanced department. That's why I am so concerned about it. Moreover, it seems that micro candidates from my country did not do well. Is this true about UMN in general? Thanks a lot.
