  1. 900-1200 for housing 500-700 for food. 100 for the rest.
  2. Northwestern strictly dominates the rest in terms of theory (unless you have Stanford or Stanford GSB). Columbia is also decent conditional on NW is not an option.
  3. Northwestern's stipend is negotiable, they can match Yale. Northwestern is definitely the best theory place (both pure and applied), they have a wide range of choices within theory and macro, not sure about the rest.
  4. For auctions and mechanism design, or theory in general, try Toulouse and Bonn, perhaps also Paris and Zurich. For market design, not sure which of the Alvin Roth boys are in Europe.
  5. Yes. You are obliged to study the first year courses in almost every Econ PhD program in the US and Europe. The second year courses are field courses, which might be more of interest to you. However, notice that you might be obliged to take field classes in several areas (say, behavior+theory, behavior+political, behavior+IO, etc), depending on the program. Some B-school may have more flexibility, depending on the details.
  6. First, add Stanford GSB, Kellogg and MIT (econ) to the list. They are top programs that you should apply. Not sure about the value added of Columbia and UChicago, but your intuition might be more precise. If you feel unsafe, add Bonn, Toulouse and UCL, they provide very decent, if not the best training in theory. Second, ask your advisors (or recommenders) about where to apply, their confidence interval as well as how they are planning for your future.
  7. what do you mean by benchmark? why not just write about your work (if it is significant), and discuss about the relevant literature. Talk to your advisor.
  8. Places like Stanford, UPenn and Northwestern should be within reach. GSB would be a long shot. Who is your advisor? Ian Jewitt? Paul Klemperer?
  9. 12. Will Stanford release their offers in the coming week?
  13. Hi, I received a skype call just now from NYU. I think it is just an information revealing process, for example, asking me about what offers I have so far. But I feel that hidden in his words, they will not give me an offer conditional on the things I have received so far.

  18. Really? All right, then I can have a rest without checking emails every couple of hours.
  19. I guess Yale will come out in a few days, if they stick to the schedule in previous years. Good luck, everyone.
