Actually I cannot say anything about it, as I have not heard or read somewhere about the comparison between the two different test of GRE. Ask seniors or the future aspirants aiming for Fall 2012.

The way you are thinking is very correct and to the best of my knowledge. I am an Fall 2011 aspirant and I have gone through this things last year. See I would suggest you to look forward for Spring 2012 or better to look out for Fall 2012, as during Fall sessions better scholarship and selection opportunities are present in US universities... Also many universities have only Fall intake for most of their Major programs. You can give any time GRE during the year and its valid for 5 years so prepare well and appear before August 2011, as the GRE pattern is changing from August 2011. I hope this helps.
