  1. yes they do have an equivalent course specially for math majors, maybe I can try that, good idea! thank you art_vandelay!
  2. They have these courses, but I don't know how they evaluate the courses in Asia... In terms of LORs, is it better to find a senior prof from a good school (top 30) or a junior from top 10? many thanks!
  3. thanks elliephant I know this is a big problem...but still have a try..will econ and non econ , MA and undergrads be treated the same? is it possible to ask for a LOR within 2-3 months when you are in a 1 yr MA program? p.s. I'm not from UST, but as far as I know, UST is also very career oriented, although they recruited phds from tier 1 schools(recently 1 from chicago). People in HK don't usually apply to grad schools
  4. may be a bit longer:) profile: pre-university in mainland China, attending a top3 university in Hong Kong, quantitative finance, junior year. currently a visiting student for 1 sem at a top 20 university in US, but they don't have a strong econ department. I was planning for i-banks but found out it was not for me.decided to go for a phd in economics... GPA: 3.69/4.0 (3.76 if excluding my 2 sucked B- math courses), on a first class track(the b school gives out first class for 3.5+) .my school has a strict curve dist. e.g. math department mean is B- or B, depends on the instructor. Math: cal 1,2,3(equivalent) in 2 courses: A- &A, linear algebra B-, ODE B- :(well i was skipping classes last sem because i was not intended for grad schools at that time and the instructor couldn't explain the materials clearly --plan to take real analysis, fin math and stochastic process before graduation. STA: probability theory A- and Stat inference B+ econ: principle, basic micro, both A taking intermediate micro and econometrics now, on A track, plan to take intermediate macro a bunch of FIN courses, A and A- You may see that my biggest concern now is my math grades. well, my ability is at least above average among Chinese students but the grades... now i regret not working hard last semester, how can I make up that? Taking real analysis is helpful? My interest is on labor and demographic economics (I'm also a big sociology fan), I don't think it's too math intensive...is that true? My school is very career oriented and senior professors don't involve too much with undergrads. They have a good econ department, quite reputable in Asia, Old professors are from universities like UIUC and Minnesota, recently recruited from mit, nw. Few students in econ had interest in grad school so not many applied for it. As far as I know, 1 undergrad went to cornell, the other BU, both did exchange at Penn. I can ask a reputable fin prof here in US to write LOR for me, econ prof.? I'm not sure but I'll try my best.Back to HK, I plan to find a prof. supervising my thesis. and also find some RA ship. Do you guys think i still have a chance to get into a top 30 program (this is a bottom line to find a professorship in my university now, I think at least I should be able to come back, otherwise it's not worthful)? I still have 1 year. how should i prepare besides math and senior thesis? or it's better for me to go to a master program first then apply? I found there were some 1-year MA programs in UBC and Toronto(that's the most i can afford), but i don't know if it will make a difference just lagging my application for 1 year. Thanks a lot in advance!
