]Hi Everyone, Trust you are doing great. Quick overview of the post I have completed by masters in India and planning to apply for Finance PhD programs in this year's application cycle (fall 2015 cohort). I want to compare business Phd prgrams in USA & Canda and my chances of getting admits in these programs, and a tenure track/teaching positions later on in decently paying schools in Canada after that. Though I am not disinclined to do good research, my primary motive to do a Phd is to settle in USA/Canada with a green-card/citizenship as early as possible. To be honest, I am considering Canada because I have heard that they have very immigration friendly norms for top Phd students and give permanent residency just after 3-4 years into the program. On the other hand, I guess it's quite difficult to get green card in USA for Indian these days. I also believe that it's much easier to have a balanced life while working in Canadian universities due to relatively lesser competition. Details Brief profile PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad (top ranked Indian B school with few past alumni working as professors in top US universities); 3.6/4.33 ( top 4 in a batch of 400; 1st rank in 1st year common curriculum) - was ranked in top 3 students among a 350 strong class in many economics & finance courses; many institute level awards for academic performance B. Tech & M. Tech Electronics & electrical engineering IIT Kharagpur 6.7/10 (bottom 20%) CFA level 3 passed (2007-09) I took GRE 6 years back and scored 1450/1600 ( Q 800, V 640, AWA 3.5), but will have to take it again since it has expired Have some very good ranking in all India examinations such as IIT-JEE Screening 17/200,000, CAT 99.96% etc... Have been working with one of the top-3 management consulting firms as a consultant for last two and half years. I know few people suggest RA positions to boost profile but this won't be possible for me due to personal reasons.

Hi Everyone, It's been almost two years since I came to know about this community. Great tool for grad school aspirants, I must say!! Hope you are doing great! Quick overview of the post I have completed by masters in India and planning to apply for Finance PhD programs in next application cycle (fall 2014 cohort). I have a slightly different profiles with a couple of both really good & bad points and need to know how I can boost it so that i can be competitive for top 20-25 programs. Details Here is a brief to my overall profiles PGDM (equivalent to MBA) from IIM Ahmedabad (top ranked Indian B school with few past alumni working as professors in top US universities), 3.5/4.33 ( top 5 in a batch of 400, 1st rank in 1st year common curriculum) - was ranked in top 3 students among a 350 strong class in many economics & finance courses (we have a continuous grading system here and hence generally no two students get exactly same rank in a subject) - many institute level awards for academic performance B. Tech & M. Tech Electronics & electrical engineering IIT Kharagpur 6.7/10 (bottom 20%) CFA level 3 passed (2007-09) I took GRE 4 years back and scored 1450/1600 ( Q 800, V 640, AWA 3.5), but will take it again and would definitely improve AWA and verbal score -- you could easily assume that I would rank in top 1-2 percentile in both sections. Have some very good ranking in all India examinations such as IIT-JEE Screening 17/200,000, CAT 99.96% etc... Well, right now I am not looking for a profile evaluation. I have had mixed reaction from people on this front - some saying I stand very good chance in 10-30 ranked schools, some saying there are no chances even in top 50 and so and so ..... I intend to apply for fall 2014 admission which basically means that I have about 10 months to work on profile. However, till then I have to continue with my job which is quite hectic, and hence I am unable to take any full time research position in ISB or any other places during this period. I just want to know what I can do in the mean time to boost my profile to be eligible for 10-20 ranked schools. Two options I can think of are following 1. Take Maths subject GRE 2. Take online math courses from some US universities (though I have read about it at few places, but currently don't understand how it works - especially the evaluation part) Please let me know what you think of these options, also if you could suggest something better, would be really really grateful

What goes around comes around!!! Hello everyone Hope you are doing great! It's been almost two years since I had asked about my chances in a finance Phd program. Well, there is not much to add since then. I had finished by MBA programs about a year back. and I am working with a strategy consulting firm for last 8 months. Here is my updated profile(posting everything again for ease of reading): B. Tech & M. Tech Electronics & electrical engieering IIT Kharagpur 6.7/10 (bottom 20%) PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad 3.5/4.33 ( top 5 in a batch of 400, 1st rank in 1st year common curriculum) - was ranked in top 3 students among a 350 strong class in many economics & finance courses (we have a continuous grading system here and hence generally no two students get exactly same rank in a subject). What are my chances of getting a Finance Phd admit

Thanks a lot guys for taking time to write your views. And I am really elevated by traderjoe's opinion. Tat said I would certainly love to hear more opinions. @ rsaylors.. I guess you are not familiar with grading system at my univ. It's certainly a top rated school in India and they don't really award more than a 3.7 . In fact 80% of the class passes with a GPA less than 3. -
Hey everyone, Currently I am pursuing my PGDM ( equivalent to MBA ) from IIMA ( one of the best B school in India). I did my undergrad from IIT Kharagpur in Engineering. I am intersted in doing a Phd in finance after completing my MBA but I am very unsure about my chances of getting into a good program. If any of you guys can throw some light about my chances in top 10,20 or 50 B school, it would be a great help. Profile in Brief: B. Tech & M. Tech ECE IIT Kharagpur 6.7/10 ( I know it's very poor, so disappointed with myself :( did not take acads seriously at all ) MBA from IIMA 3.6/4.33 ( almost in top 5 in a batch of 400 ) I have also passed all level of CFA examinations. I took GRE 2 years back and scored 1450 ( Q 800, V 640 , AWA 3.5 ), but I can take it again and would certainly improve AWA and verbal score. Have some very good ranking in all India examinations such as IIT-JEE ( Screening 17/200,000) , CAT 99.96% etc... ) I want to know if a good GPA in an MBA program can make up for messed up undergrad GPA ? If your answer is " NO, You can not get into a good program. Is there any remedy available for me? I am willing to apply after 2,3 years. But in the meantime I will be working and hence won't be able to take any full time position in research etc. Is there any way I can improve my chances while working full time ? Thanks in advance....
