  1. I have to say that these numbers are very misleading - the MBA pay figures do not include any non-cash compensation, which makes up the bulk of any buy-side package (i.e. carry / stock options / deferred bonus etc.). Trust me, US$200k is the current rate for 3yr analysts in investment banking on Wall Street at BB banks (I know coz I work there). 1st year Associates make >250k and 1st year VP >500k. On the other hand, do not underestimate how much the top B-school profs make! Good, established full professors can double their salary with consulting / speaking engagements / expert testimonies etc (so ~500k). Some top stars are actively involved as partners in hedge funds (Lo / Campbell / Fama / Thaler / Shleifer) or are directors of multiple public companies (Hubbard / Kaplan / Snyder).
  2. Chicago's attrition rate is not high - around 10%.

  4. This is great analysis. Just 2 things: 1) For Harvard, it would make sense to only include those that actually specialized in finance. You can tell by looking at the placement information of those whose dissertation topics were finance related. 2) Re your takeaways - I think you need to be more than just "above average" to get into top 10, even if you're in a tier 1 school. Reason: Those going into industry were probably the weaker students, thus they have to be taken into account when calculating averages.
  5. So far, after ~7000 votes, the top 15 are: 1. Chicago 2. Stanford 3. MIT 4. Duke 5. Wharton 6. NYU 7. Northwestern 8. Harvard 9. Berkeley 10. LBS 11. Columbia 12. LSE 13. Princeton 14. UCLA 15. UMichigan The list seems not too far off to me, except for Harvard should be top 4, Princeton top 8, UCLA top 10, whereas Duke, Northwestern and LSE should be lower. What do you guys think?
