  6. Please help me to improve my PS by removing some serious errors specifically in underlined text........ I need to submit it till 2mrow. So Pls just have a quick look on the underlined text. I consider myself fortunate enough to have been born in a small village and in a humble Christian family. This background has had a profound effect in shaping my social and academic life. I also find myself as a privileged person as my parents encouraged me to get higher education as the first kid in the family. I will never forget my father’s contribution in determining my career path. Factually, it was my father’s small business which developed my curiosity about the consumer behavior and economics as the first stimulator. I was born as a mediocre person ready to face challenge of combating with conservative psychology and belief in the status quo. My father, though not highly qualified, trained me in such a way, as to confront all challenge in life gamely. It was due to that extensive and rigorous training at home that I secured 79% marks in my matriculation examination and was the topper of my class. My father was unable to help me in my college studies, so I could not excel too much in my college. I was doing my bachelors degree when my family asked me to quit my studies due to financial constraint they were facing. This incidence had a deep impact in making me a self reliant and self made person. I have to leave my studies for a year and earn some money by teaching school students. I was able to support my education with that money and gave my examination in the following year. Although I did not performed really well but was able to get bachelors degree securing 50% marks. I have to leave my education due to lack of resources after my beholders degree. I started working as a program coordinator with ‘Organization for Community Development’ (OCD); a non-profit organization, which helped me gain sense of responsibility, maturity and self reliance. Learning to work with people and keeping them together, I was able to polish my leadership skills, which I always lacked. I keep on learning the way to organize, plan and work systematically. I also came to know the value of persistent efforts and time management. I quit my job after three years and got admission in masters in economics program in a private institute. My fascination towards economics as a subject was kindled in my masters’ degree program. I came to realize that shifts in economic variables not only affect the wealth of nations, but also the social and psychological well-being of its inhabitants. This facet of economics made it especially relevant to the real world and worth exploring rigorously. This curiosity enthralled me so much that I studied economics extensively and managed to obtain first class masters degree in economics. Until that time I was able to discern an economist inside me. But I have to explore it further by getting more formal education. I got a job as an assistant manager marketing in a textile company after my master’s degree. I keep on accumulating finances for two years to pursue my long term goal of obtaining a PhD degree in economics. My admission in the MPhil program at ‘PIDE’ was a big jump towards this objective. I delve into the field of economics more deeply during my MPhil degree program and was able to see the role of economists in determining and shaping the future of a country like Pakistan. I have an ambition to transform the socioeconomic structure of my country. I intend to contemplate and devise economic models and policies which should be compatible with its existing and future needs. My thirst for advance knowledge and drive to emerge as an economist has motivated me in both my short term and long term actions and objectives. Apart from economics, my interests in history, music and literature have broadened my vision and enhanced my understanding about myself and the World around me. Participation in different church activities and involvement in youth group has helped me enhance my interpersonal skills. These activities have inspired me to serve as a teacher. Therefore I chose my career objective as a teacher and an academic researcher. The academic environment will provide me with ample opportunities to employ different economic tools, learned during my degree program and to bring out some of the key facts about the economies of the developed and developing world. It will certainly help me to set policies, which will improve the livelihood of the masses and contribute towards the development of my country and collectively to our human nation. I hope that my dedication, drive and sincerity towards teaching / research are visible throughout my essay. I know a doctorate degree in economics requires intense dedication and intelligence and I believe I possess both. I hence appeal to the admissions committee to consider my application for admission to the doctorate program in economics.
  7. JRav...Thank you for your comments. I will take care of this.
  8. Please highlight grammatical and thematically mistakes in my PS. I consider myself fortunate to be born in a small village, to a humble Christian family. This background has had a profound effect in shaping my social and academic life. My family gave a great importance to education. My mother, a teacher herself always wanted to see me studying at a higher level. I started to observe the world around me as an economist while helping my father in his small business. It was then that my curiosity about consumer behavior was first stimulated. My fascination with economics as a subject was kindled in college, when I realized that shifts in economic variables not only affect the wealth of nations, but also the social and psychological well-being of its dwellers. This facet of economics made it especially relevant to the real world and worth exploring rigorously. This curiosity enthralled me so much that I studied economics more extensively than other subjects and soon discovered that out of all my subjects, I loved economics the most. After my master degree, I started working as a program coordinator with ‘Organization for Community Development’; a non-profit organization, which helped me gain sense of responsibility, maturity and self reliance. Learning to work with people and keeping them together, I polished my leadership skills. I learned to organize, plan and work systematically. Here are the guidelines for writing a personal statement. They required study objective too...I am emphasizing about my research interest etc in that essay. Please comment.. The personal statement is a narrative statement explaining what is special, unique, distinctive, and/or impressive about you or your life story. It may include details of your life (personal or family problems, history, people or events that have shaped you or influenced your goals), explain your interest in the field you propose to study, and demonstrate that you are well suited to this field. It should also touch on your career plans and your purpose in applying for study in the U.S. This personal statement should be a narrative statement describing how you have achieved your current goals. 12. Thanks EconBeach...my verbal in ok. let me brush up my math a bit. Which preparation material do you recommend?
  13. Thanks TomRod for replying....To be honest I am not aiming top schools. Any good school will be enough...
  14. Real Analysis (I dont know how I passed that part), differential equation, Simon and Blume (about 70% was the part of our course) and off-course Chiang
  15. Thanks for your comments. EcoBeach is right about my education. Believe me, I did all I could to prepare for GRE this time...Barron, Princeton Review, Kaplan, Nova math and a lot of forum. Given my potentials I dont think I can get 800 in quant. My last year's GRE attempt was Q680 V320 AW4.0. You can see how much effort I put to increase my verbal score. I gave same amount of time to prepare for quant, as I knew its importance for an economist. I was hoping to get 750 and ends up at 680. OK I will take GRE again...how much qaunt I should get?...I am not aiming at 800. And what if I loose some points in verbal and exit writing section?
