  1. Sorry for reviving an old thread. I was confused between option C and E for Q2. The sentence "Moreover, whereas ......eliminating mussels. in Para 2 led me to chose option C. I understand why option E is correct, but is option C wrong because it is mentioned only in a particular example?
  2. One should be responsible for one's own actions or One should be responsible for his own actions I am a bit confused here. I have searched the internet and have found that both are acceptable in American and Britich English, though one's is more formal. BUt what does GMAT say?
  3. Which is correct and why? We resolved the issue among ourselves or We resolved the issue among us?
  4. “When the Apogee Company had all its operations in one location, it was more profitable than it is today. Therefore, the Apogee Company should close down its field offices and conduct all its operations from a single location. Such centralization would improve profitability by cutting costs and helping the company maintain better supervision of all employees.” According to the argument, the author concludes that profitability can be increased by conducting all operations from a single location and shutting down the various other offices of the Apogee company. He has based his conclusion on insufficient premises that profitability only depends on whether operations are centralized or de-centralized. THe author asssumes many aspects and his assumptions are flawed. Firstly, the author assumes that demand of the products manufactered by the company is still the same and therefore he expects the profitability to be the same if not more. This assumption may not be true and if the company has not catered to the increasing demands and is still producing defunct or old versions of products, profitability will be less. THis will not be due to decentralization but due to the fact there is not much demand for such products now. Secondly, the author also assumes that the company has moulded its operation and business with the times and is able to cope up with stiff competition from other companies. This cannot be assumed as it is possible that the company has not diversified its operations and hence not been able to compete with companies in the same business domain. If such a thing is true then customers will prefer other companies which offer advanced and diverse range of products than the Apogee company resulting in reduced profitability. Thirdly, it has been assumed that the expenditure of the company in areas such as salary, operation costs, real estate costs has remained the same. But if expenditure has indeed increased and the revenue of the company has remained the same then profitability will decrease. This decrease will not be due to decentralization. The author argument may be justified in case it is known that the company is earning more as a result of diversifying its business and producing goods which enjoy a healthy demand in the market. It can then be argued that if revenue has increased there must be another factor which is resulting in low profitability. This factor can be increased expenditure costs due to overheads in supervising different branches. The argument could be evaluated better if some potential queries were addressed. A few include information on whether the demand of the products manufactured have changed, whether the company is able to meet stiff competition from its rivals and whether the expenditure costs have changed. Thus based on the reasons cited above, the argument is ill considered and needs further information to be evaluated effectively.
  5. “Of all the manifestations of power, restraint in the use of that power impresses people most.” According to the author, power without any restrictions on its use is dangerous and restraint on that ability is what is acceptable. On the other hand, it can also be argued that putting limits on the use of power curbs its effectiveness as is the case in any type of restriction. I agree with the author and would like to substantiate this with the following examples. Limitless power enables a person to violate all ethical norms and do more harm than good. Lets us take an example of the controversial 2G scam which was possible as the telecom minister of India was given unbridled power to suo moto make decisions and change the rules. This has resulted in a huge loss to the exchequer. Had the minister not been granted unlimited power, it would have been possible to check the scam at its roots. Limitless power enables a person to spread his own questionable ideology. An example to support this can be the attempt of the islamic radicals trying to spread their own version of the message of Islam. The terrorist organisations which are banned in other countries are considered legit by some sections of the muslim population due to the social and rebuilding activities which they carry out. Such organisations have exploited this trust and have gone to an extent of imposing this belief in other countries by violent means. THe fact that these organisations are able to spread their beliefs is due to unbridled power and influence that they enjoy. Unrestrained power in the hands of parents or the community is also questionable at times. This enables them to make decisions for the younger generation which are not always ideal. Examples of such power would be the recent issue of village legal bodies comprising the elders of the community which is able to adjudicate in cases of inter caste marriages. Power has enabled such bodies to go to an extent of sacrificing their own children in order to preserve the culture. Such acts have only been possible due to unrestricted power in enforcing one's own ideologies on another. Thus, I strongly believe that unbridled power can do more harm than good and a line needs to be drawn so that the freedom to excercise power remains within the acceptable limits.
  6. Can some one please let me know I understand the below solution correctly? Carbon-14 dating reveals that the megalithic monuments in Brittany are nearly 2,000 years as old as any of their supposed Mediterranean predecessors. A. as old as any of their supposed B. older than any of their supposed C. as old as their supposed D. older than any of their supposedly E. as old as their supposedly Though option B and D are both gramatically correct, The focus in the sentence is on the fact that the megalithic monuments are older that their predecesors and not on the fact that the predecessors are mediterranean. Option B modifies predecessors while option D focusses on mediterranenan and therfore option B is the answer. James Joyce is Max's supposedly Irish ancestor James Joyce is Max's supposed Irish ancestor. The focus is on whether James Joyce is Max's ancestor. The first one focusses on James being Irish while the second sentence focus on James being the ancestor. Hence, 2nd one is correct.
  7. Which is correct? Please justify your answers as well. That must be him. or That must be he. No one could be as happy as I or No one could be as happy as me My father is still taller than she or My father is still taller than her. No one in this class has done the homework but me or No one in this class has done the homework but I.
  8. Please help me understand the below sentence. Researchers claim to have developed new "nano-papers" incorporating tiny cellulose fibers, which they allege give them the strength of cast iron. The above sentence is from mgmat sc. Contextually, "they" must refer to Researchers (as they is used to refer to living things) and "them" to nano papers ( as nano papers are the things being developed which get cast iron strength). So the sentence seems to be correct but as per the guide it is wrong as the antecedents "they" and "them" may refer to any of the nouns. Please explain this as any other noun will not fit in here and so the sentence seems to be correct as it is.
