  1. Although both classes are very important, Probability is more necessary, and everything you learn will have application to econ.
  2. Heterodox is a UMass way or heterodox in a George Mason way?
  3. Hello hopeful, I was recently on a student committee that helped select a recent hire at our school (top 30 LAC) and 2/4 final candidates were NDers, and the job went to a ND student. I know the faculty who had the final decision on the candidates were very impressed with the ND students and seem to like the school a lot.
  4. Not doubting what you're saying, but do you have the source available? I'd love to take a look at some stats about where people come from.
  5. Unfortunately, simply Calc I will not suffice for any doctorate program. You need at least Calc I-III plus Linear Algebra.
  6. Hey guys. So there's a class offered at my school next semester. I don't really know what to make of it. It's called Modern Geometry (prereqs being Multi and LA). I'm not exactly sure what this means, and most importantly whether it has application to econ. Last semester I took DE in the hopes it would apply to econ but we ended up doing a lot of physics-related material. Here is the description given on our website: Geometry of surfaces in 3-dimensional space, including lengths, areas, angles, curvature, and topology. Classification of Euclidean isometries. Classification of compact surfaces having constant Gaussian curvature. What drew me was the mention of 'topology.' My school does not have a topology class so this may be my only chance for that, but it seems like it may just be touched on. What do y'all think - will this class apply to econ?
  7. I will be following this thread very diligently as we have remarkably similar stats. Best of luck!
  8. This is exactly what I did last semester because I started my math way too late (for any young UG's out there, if you want to succeed in life, start math as soon as possible). Not gonna lie, it was a tough semester, but the classes are different enough that you won't be at too much of a disadvantage. Go for it.
  9. I'm wondering the same thing here...this would be my dream job for post-grad next year:grad:
  10. Sorry to dig up this old thread again, but I've been looking at Canadian Master's programs recently since this forum has greatly humbled me in terms of PhD expectations based on my my resume:doh: I saw earlier in this thread that the Canadian % for master's was 12 canadians vs 3 international (I'm American). This was surprisingly high to me: is it typical for Canadian MA programs to have such high Canadian/intl ratios? Also, does anyone know if Western is still just as Canadian? Also, I've been perusing other Canadian MA programs, and it seems Western takes a back seat to quite a few other schools in a lot of minds. Has Western fallen off the map recently or does it remain strong compared to other programs? Lastly, are Canadian MA programs significantly harder to get into than American programs, seeing as they're cheaper? Thanks for the help
  11. My school gave me a grant to study the impact of cigarette excise tax collection on a Native American reservation. Pretty excited about the opportunity to start research.
  12. So, I just discovered this site a few days ago and have been lurking and clearly now decided to join. I'm looking into a Phd (just finished up junior year) to try to make Mom & Pop proud, and I have a question for y'all: Before now, I've received much of my "knowledge" of the strengths of different programs by the U.S. News and World Report rankings. In those rankings, there are dozens of programs that are listed as "unranked." However, some of these "unranked" schools, which one would think would be worse than any ranked school, seem to have better reputations here (what specifically comes to mind are American, UMass, West Virginia, Delaware, New Mexico, and maybe Utah). So my question is, are these schools unranked because for whatever reason they didn't fit U.S. News methodologies or didn't send in data or something like that, or does U.S. News believe they are below all the ranked schools? Thanks for the help!;)
