  1. Prof. Cyernacia’s List Good texts: I. BC: 1. Lehninger: Principles of Biochemistry (4th Ed) Nelson and Cox, 2004 2. Biochemistry (3rd Edition) Voet and Voet, 2004 II. CB: 1. Molecular Cell Biology (5th Edition), Lodish, Baltimore et al Aug 2003 ($30 used, new $126) 2. Molecular Biology of the Cell (4th Edition) Alberts, et al, March 2002 ($43 used, new $110) III. MB: 1. An Introduction to Genetic Analysis (8th Edition), Griffiths, Wessler, et al 2004 2. Modern Genetic Analysis: Integrating Genes and Genomes (2nd Edition). Griffiths, et al (2002) MB of Cell by Alberts should cover you for Cell Biology portion. Others you please pick one of your chioce. Having said that the books you studied for your MS will be your best source to understand the syllabus (if it is covered in that book). There are some other books mentioned in old threads pls go thru them. Also you might want to check upon old forum site which is http://www.TestMagic.com/forum I don't if everything from there is loaded to this new site or not.
  2. first of all, I beleive these problems were omitted in scoring 'cos they are ambiguous. So the problems in the practice test as they appear are correct or still there is a typo or ambiguity in 'em? That particular test was scored only for 65 questions not 70.
  3. 5. yogeshvara: Dr. Neeraj Gupta. I am doing post graduate MD in Biochemistry from Maulana Azad medical College, New Delhi. I am planning to give Subject GRE in bcmb in Nov 2004. I invite every dedicated soul to unite and crack this nut. It is will give great kick and the fun will be much more when there is a group work. My research interests are Drug designing, gene therapy for human genetics diseases, eugenics, neurobiology Any one may contact me for great and interesting discussion on "life" at molecular level and beyond... email me at: neeraj7gupta@rediffmail.com mobile: 0091-009868426252 I have reg, for gre sub on nov.13 in delhi. I wish to know if there is any study material available for biochemistry subject test other than the downloadable book on http://www.gre.org website. Or any use full website. We can exchange information on tests question and the exam and make this a very good experience. I TELL YOU THIS AN VERY GOOD OPPURTINITY TO HAVE REALLY GOOD KICKS BY BLASTING THIS PROBLEM AND MAKING AN IMPRESSION ONTHE SAND OF TIME. i well come everybody to put questions and start disscussion. I am interested in Neurosciences and intended to do post doc in Memory and cognitive enhancers. keep writing, Neeraj 6. pavi_2602: I am planning to take the test in Nov, 2004. Havent really started preparing for it. Am gonna take the gre general in sep. Now that i have started to look into the biochem test, its starting to freak me out. Little abt me, doing my BS in comp sci, BA honors in bio. Gonna apply for a phd in bioinformatics or molc bio. I was gonna start by reading Lehninger's biochem, and then move on to the cell and molc bio textbooks. Maybe we could share our progress on what we've read, and how much... 7. Dunadan: I also want to apply to bioinformatics programs this Fall. I am majoring in Applied Math and Biology, sort of like you. 8. navneet: I am doing my masters in plant molecular bio and plan to do phd in a similar area either mol bio or genetics..finished giving my gre gen test last week . have a score of 1510\1600 .. am really very apprehensive wrt to the sub test....but most univ i checked out seem to have made it mandatory....so here i am..hoping to get in touch with other kindred souls.... 9.amogha: I am a Post-grad in Molecular Cell Biology from Nottingham Trent University, UK. Have got all the references listed in this site (study material). Still I have some quires. DO we need general GRE along with the Subject GRE to be considered for a PhD programme or just Subject GRE is sufficient. 10. venus_ani: I am planning to take my subject test Biochem in Nov/Dec 2004,Presently i am pursuing my M.S in Molecular bio from Texas .Since there are no specific books for subject test in biochem like that of Gen GRE , I was wondering how much time to devote for the preparation and the books to follow.Regarding the test I was doing some searches ,Actually there is a Kaplan GRE bio but no books as such for biochem, cell and mol bio subject test
  4. I can tell this much, both 1996 & 2003 practice tests don't have any DBMS questions. But thats just an observation, the test we take might/might not have DBMS questions. :) May be Vipul can chip in?
  5. Are you sure you have 2002 practice test? what does it say on the topleft corner? e.g., GR0.. GR03.. implies 2003 paper?
  6. Aren't you joining Columbia this Fall?
  7. thx piero, agreed theory didn't change much. But if you compare the question types between these two tests it gives a much clearer picture of what to expect on the test and 2003 practice test is more relevant to current syllabus. The test is actually from 2003, vow! thats great :) thx to ETS, now we have two practice tests. Wishful thinking but, if ETS can administer GRE (Computer Science) in April also atleast in USA - that will be great! -Siraj

  9. pavi, here is Prof. Cyernacia’s List, apart from that you can read from anywhere as far as you are covering the syllabus. good luck. :) Good texts: I. BC: 1. Lehninger: Principles of Biochemistry (4th Ed) Nelson and Cox, 2004 2. Biochemistry (3rd Edition) Voet and Voet, 2004 II. CB: 1. Molecular Cell Biology (5th Edition), Lodish, Baltimore et al Aug 2003 ($30 used, new $126) 2. Molecular Biology of the Cell (4th Edition) Alberts, et al, March 2002 ($43 used, new $110) III. MB: 1. An Introduction to Genetic Analysis (8th Edition), Griffiths, Wessler, et al 2004 2. Modern Genetic Analysis: Integrating Genes and Genomes (2nd Edition). Griffiths, et al (2002)
  10. I beleive its a good idea to give the test again, since its been 3 years since you last gave. If you do well this time then there are pretty good chances they will consider only the latest as it reflects your current knowledge/readiness for the Ph.D.
  11. sundeep, if you give test in Nov'05, scores will be sent by ~Dec23'2005, if you give in Dec'05 they will be sent by ~Jan14'2006. Now some Univs have a deadlines of Dec 31'2005, some have Jan15'2006 some have Feb and March'2006. So its a good Idea to put your application way before without waiting for subject test scores. Normally Univs consider ur socres when they reach them and then decide your fate :). Having said that my only concern is if you give Subject test this year, I am not sure how well you will be prepared? Check the syllabus and see if you cover it before the exam date thru self study or your curriculum. But if your are going to take few courses which matter for the test after the test dates then better wait.
  12. Right strategy is to finish your GREs first (atleast General) and then look for universities based on your scores and academic achievements
  13. don't waste a chance with bad score, since you are in 2nd yr and applying for Fall'2006, you can give it in NOV'2005 if that is offered in India else you can give in Dec'2005. This way u will be better prepared to do well in the exam.
  14. Hi guys, ETS posted test dates for next year: NOV 13, 2004 DEC 11, 2004 APR 2, 2005 (NO CS Test! :(!) ETS provides latest practice tests for other subject tests e.g., Biochemistry, Cell and Molecualr Biology - practice test from 2000 Chemistry - practice test from 2000 Biology - practice test from 1999 but Computer Science - practice test from 1996 (so old...) There is no standard by ETS, looks like its all haphazard, what are they scared of for providing atleast a 2000 practice test?
  15. 1310 seems to be a good score. Whats the split? If you have High quant (atleast 80th percentile) that should definitely help your chances in Biophysics. As far as schools are concerned, There is no ranking available for Biophysics, but Biochem is there at usnews gradschool rankings. Your best shot is access these rankings online/printed copy and go to each university and biophysics dept to know more about it. If you have good computer skills, you might even consider Bioinformatics and Computational biology.
