  1. Good luck with that Inkoate! I have no idea about subject tests though.. ! Hi Deepa! Thank you. :) At the end of the test, you get a RANGE of scores, one for verbal and one for quant. The range for each part is out of 800 (old score). As per ETS, the range of scores gives you an idea of how many questions you attempted right and at what difficulty level the questions you attempted were. I'm guessing that the actual score will lie somewhere in this range. Not sure, though. As for my Univ shortlisting, I didn't do much research because I thought I'd look into it later. I just applied for some of the well-known, top Univs for Computer Science. Here's a link you can try out in case you want to shortlist before the exam: Top ranked US universities, Best USA colleges, medicine, engineering, law schools, MBA : Topgre.com - GRE coaching classes (or even google in general). But make sure you look at the top Univs FOR YOUR BRANCH in particular. The general rankings and dept-specific rankings differ. I'm planning on taking up Computer Science later on - don't know what Univs I'll get for my score though! What about you? Mav32, for some reason, I'm unable to upload the High Freq list. You should find them easily though!
  3. Hi mav32, Thanks a lot. :) I basically had a month of holidays before my college started, so I had to adjust my entire plan for that one single month. Initially, I had no idea about the prep, so I started with Norman Lewis, three sections a day. This took me about fifteen days. While I was doing this, I joined a coaching center and got to know about Barrons, etc, etc. The people at my coaching center mailed me an assortment of about 500 important words, so I started off with that, about 100 a day. After finishing with this, I took up Barrons' High Frequency Words - 333 of them, same pace - 100 a day. Most of them were kind of redundant, so it was all the more easier. This consisted of a large chunk of my vocab prep - it took me around a week or so. Then came the Princeton Review Hit Parades - I took in as much as I could in the last week. I made sure I had the tough words written down in a book. I had about 650 words in it. And yep, I also put the confusing words like 'stimulate' and 'simulate' together so I would remember that there are two such confusing words and to make sure I remembered that. It worked that way for me. After my college started, I made sure I looked at the book each day and remembered all the words. Meanwhile, any new words that I would encounter in the tests (ETS Powerprep, KapTest and the PrincetonReview test) would also be added to the little book. By the time the exam date arrived, I was comfortable with my little book and the words in it. Hope this helps! However, I suggest that you recheck the meanings of each in a dictionary in case you are using these lists- just so you don't get the wrong meaning. Nobody can be trusted too much!   4. Hi all! I'm glad to say that I've finally finished my Revised GRE - and I'm happy with my scores. Thanks to all the urch forum members for taking their time out and clarifying all my doubts. I've posted so much here and learnt so much from all the threads! I've actually learnt some stuff that my coaching institute couldn't teach me. :) Cheers Urch members! Coming to the test - simply put, it was exhausting. No mock test in the world could prepare me for the mental/physical exhaustion that I went through today. I had a headache by the time I finished my exam lol. Well, obviously, it differs for everybody, so some of you might find that it's a breeze. :) Here's a brief summary of what happened today: AWA: It was okay, but I was too concerned with small details (I took almost five minutes to come up with a passable example), so a lot of valuable time went into that, and I had to hurry through the rest of the essays. The topics as such were easy, and the argument was really flawed, so it was easy to point out the loopholes. Verbal: My second section was verbal. I found this section really tough - SEs, SCs and RCs. But maybe that's just because I'm a non-native speaker of English.. I completed this section just on time. Quant: Easy-peasy section. Nothing much here, I guess everybody should find this easy - no worries! I had around 5 mins left at the end, so I just rechecked my answers and continued. Ten-minute break: I fully utilized this - it helps a lot to actually stretch a bit, drink some water, wash your face and any other stuff. I suggest everybody take a break here, because it gets tedious later on. Verbal Again: Got a really easy one this time, so this left me thinking that maybe I'd done my first Verbal section really badly (section adaptive, remember?). Then I forced myself to think this was the unscored section, and went on with the test (without getting depressed! :P). Had some time left at the end of the section, so just went through the answers again and skipped the remaining time to go on to the next section. Quant: A lil more tough, this. Had some lengthy calculations and a lot more logic involved than the first section. However, I enjoyed doing this because I basically like Maths, and the problems were just the right kind. No time left after the section though! Verbal: By this time, my eyes were worn out. I was beginning to get tired of the exam (enough sections already!). Now this bonus section. Really sad that I didn't get the ETS survey, but oh well. This section was mid-way between the last two in terms of difficulty. Had ten minutes left, rechecked. My pulse started racing because the next Continue would lead me to the scores. Bleh! Scores: Report/Cancel options. After the scores were reported, I was a little relieved. Univs selection: You need to choose Country->State->UnivName->Department, or choose according to the UniversityCode. So in case you have a list of four Univs, make sure you know which state they belong to! Aaaaand wrap up, at around 5:30. Calculated my possibilities as I left the building :D Some general things which I did today: 1. Made sure I mentally listed out the points of my AWA essays. After writing the intro, I directly wrote the conclusion, because I was afraid of not having enough time in the end and leaving the examiner with a bad impression of my essay. 2. Skipped the 1-min breaks to keep the flow going. 3. If I had extra time left, I just rechecked my answers and skipped the rest of the time. The sooner you get to your sections, the better are the possibilities of your brain still remaining fresh till the end of the test. 4. Didn't spend more than a minute-and-a-half on any question. In case of even the slightest doubt, mark and get back to it later. But make sure you mark some answer in the first pass itself - you don't know if you will have sufficient time to even guess later on. 5. Didn't go in depth into any of the RCs. The details of a long RC really get to me. Roughly read the passage (under 2 mins). Checked the question, and looked for an answer in the passage. 6. Did each Math problem in two ways - calculated by hand (the actual method) and then cross verified by plugging in numbers and using the calculator. 7. Utilized the ten-min break to its fullest. All these worked for me; I'm not sure if it works for others as well. Good luck for your GRE guys. It's not as tough as we're told - we just need to get used to the environment around us.   7. Hi Megamind, Thanks for replying back! :) I still have a few doubts left: Q.1. Like I mentioned in my original post, why can't it be 10P2 * 10P2 instead? Could you please explain? Q.2. That's the answer which I got too! But the OA is 1500. Maybe it's wrong. Q.3. Could you please take a look at what I did in my post above? Where did I go wrong? Q.4.   8. Hi Samarth, Thanks for your comprehensive reply. I have a few further doubts: Q.1. I understood how the answer came to be 8100, but I wanted to know why (10p2)*(10p2) = 2025 cannot be used here. Like you said, I think this is a misleading question. What say? Q.2. For the first slot, shouldn't it be 4c1 (exclude zero) instead and not 4p1? And similarly, the last slot can be 0, 2, 4, 5 (this covers all cases - divisibility by 2 or 5 or both 2 and 5). Therefore the last slot can have 4c1 choices. The rest can have 5 choices each, so that would make it (4C1)*(5C1)*(5C1)*(5C1)*(4C1) = 2000. Even that isn't the answer, unfortunately. Q.3. Yep, 66 is right! However, isn't what you did equivalent to choosing two children out of the group? How would that amount to pairing up children? Can you please take a look at what I did and point out where I went wrong? The first child has 11 choices. After he is paired up with someone, the second child has 12-2 (the paired ones) = 10-1 (himself) i.e. 9 remaining kids to choose from. So on and so forth till the last child (the sixth one) has only one choice left. Therefore, the total possible pairs are 11*9*7*5*3*1 = 10395, which is not even close to any of the answers! Q.4. I guess we must be using 5p2 here, since the order matters 2-5=-3 and 5-2=3. Crossing out those which have the same result, like 15-10=5 and 10-5=5, we would have some answer that is The other answers seem to have matched. I understand the ring one now! Thanks again!   9. Hi all, I'm having a problem in differentiating when to use the counting principle and when to use the permutation formula. For example, I found this question on GRE : Q.1. Ten different letters of an alphabet are given. 2 of these letters followed by 2 digits are used to number the products of a company. In how many ways can the products be numbered? Can anyone help me with this? Regards, mantrapad Edit: I also have a few other problems: Q.2. How many five digit numbers can be formed using 0, 2, 3, 4 and 5 when repetition is allowed, such that the number formed is divisible by 2 or 5 or both? (My ans: 2000) Q.3. There are 12 children in a party. In how many ways can different pairs be made? (My ans: 10395) Q.4. How many different differences can be obtained by taking only two numbers at a time from 3, 5, 2, 10 and 15? (My ans: Something Q.5. In a class test, there are 5 questions. Four questions are have been taken from each of the four chapters containing 3, 3, 6 and 6 questions respectively. The fifth question can be chosen from any of the chapters. How many papers could have been prepared? (My ans: 4536) Q.6. In how many ways can five rings be worn on three fingers? (My ans: No idea, I got some really complicated calculations, so I quit.) There is a HUGE disparity between my answers and the OAs. What's wrong?
  10. Can someone explain why the answer to 23 is B? I worked out the answer to C, but looks like that's wrong. BTW, this took me 10 mins to work out, and one wrong answer.
  11. I think the answer should be B. The line "Long before the Romantics stressed intuition and self-expression, the frenzy of inspiration was regarded as fundamental to art, but philosophers had always assumed it must be controlled by law" So the Romantics held a view contrary to the philosophers, i.e. Romantic Art did NOT stress upon the linear perspective and anatomy (which philosophers cared about). That answers option B with a no. Therefore, the passage provides a definite answer (no) to B. What is the official answer?
  12. Hi sunny! The answer should be C. I guess you answered A because you saw this : but the rate of encroachment into open countryside has lately increased alarmingly (the question asks you about forests, not the countryside). What you need to see is this : Bracken fern has been spreading from its woodland strongholds (woodland = forest. And stronghold is something where somebody has a grip or is well-established). Which leads to C. Hope that helps!

  14. Hey! I'm not a pro - and I have this problem too. One of my lecturers suggested that I should try remembering the words using its SOUND rather than just blindly mugging it up. Sort of like a mnemonic. I saw this on a website. torpor = sluggishness. To remember it, you can try reversing the word to get 'por tor' - a good mnemonic would be "poor tortoise". You picture that in your mind, and you get the idea. I kinda felt this was a bad way of mugging up words - you can recognize them fine, but you won't be able to use them. It would be better to learn these words by reading books, but that is if you already had that habit. Otherwise, I'd advise you to stick to mnemonics. All the best! :)

Well, I went with the sentence "The task is daunting, because the colder atoms get, the more prone they are to soaking up energy from any surrounding source, thereby raising their temperatures", so I chose B. I thought A had some extra info - "thereby losing their individual atomic identities" - which I know is right, but wasn't specified in the passage; so I didn't want to choose that. I'm still not clear on this... ? Can you please elaborate on the same?
