  1. your scores in the old scale would be about: Quant- 540 Verbal- 380
  2. So, after about 15 days from my test date, my scores have been sent to the 4 univs I chose at the test centre, and even tho' scores have been sent to the 4 univs, they are yet to appear online in "MY GRE" account, apparently it'l take 10 days more, so I decided to use the phone service(12 dollars) to get the scores, and they are... Verbal- 160 - 86 percentile Quant- 160- 84 percentile AWA- 5.0- 87 percentile...

    Revised GRE score help

@guest, i too have read the same articles about not comparing the different formats, and yes, 308 is definitely a very decent score for GRE, but other factors also do count in your application...but you won't be at any disadvantage with this gre score... I have a question for Deepika, did you get the same score(157, 151) at the test center too? or did you get scores in the prior format?
  4. Hey Guys @Those who have taken the revised gre and got their raw scores in the current format(170 scale) at the test center, did you get the same scores when your scores were reported online, i mean the scaled scores? ETS website says raw scores are converted to scaled scores thru a process known as "equating", if so, has anyone got different raw and scaled scores(both in the current format)? Its a very urgent situation, so I would really appreciate some quick replies... Thanks.
  5. So i've heard it takes 10-15 days(after the test date) for ETS to post the GRE scores online, but has anyone got the scores before this timeline? its already been more than 10 days for me yet no scores...
  6. Hey Guys Just gave the revised GRE. Got verbal-160, quant -160. Quant is less, I know, but the immensely high level of quant questions coming up at the end of the test, it was simply too much to crack... Anyways, what do you guys think? Is this a sufficient enough score? I've got 111 in toefl... hope to get in some near about good univs...
  7. Hello all, I am taking the revised gre in 3 days...Not much time left, I need help with the vocab part of verbal, thing is- I have a pretty good understanding of the basic to moderate level words that come up in the new gre, I have finished the entire book on "Essential Words for the GRE" by Philip Geer(Barron's), but even then, there are some(many i guess) very high level words that I don't know. So should I mug up the old Barron's word list(about 3500 words- and consequently use up an important chunk of the short time left just for vocab), or should I just chuck the word list and revise all the basic things(verbal, quant, awa) in the remaining 3 days? PLZ HELP....
  8. 1) elaborate on your introduction para a bit more...just giving your opinion is not enough..about 3-4 sentences is good. 2) begin each of your body sentence with a statement that controls the main idea of your para. This is called the topic sentence. Like the way you did in para 4. For ex, begin para 1 like- Firstly, people may sometimes be compelled to move to areas which have far better employment prospects. 3) "Also, people who live in society whose members are not so creative, prespective, and educative become frustrated and helpless, hence become no more innovative if they didn't move to a place where they can find people with parallel interests and ideas."---- this is not really an effective argument in favour of your opinion, but if you think it is, give some examples to support it. Remember, the more supporting statements you include- facts, details, personal experience, examples- the better your essay is. And this is not only for this para, it holds true for all paras of your essay. Good Luck!
  9. In speaking, there are 6 tasks, each of those 6 tasks are rated separately on a scale of 0-4, all the scores from each task are added up and the sum is divided by 6, this gives the mean score for speaking which is then converted into the scaled score. The conversion is done as follows:-- 4.0-30 3.80-29 3.66-28 3.50-27 3.33-26 3.16-24 and so on... In writing, each task is rated separately on a scale of 0-5, then the scores for both tasks are added up and divided by 2, the mean score is then converted to a scaled score similarly. 5.0-30 4.75-29 4.50-28 and so on.
  10. Scaled scores for reading and listening are calculated depending on the percentage of correct answers, and the percentage is converted into the raw score as follows: 1) 98.3-100% - 30 2) 95-98.2% - 29 3) 91.7-94.9% - 28 4) 88.3-91.6 - 27 5) 85-88.2 - 26 6) 81.7-84.9- 25 7) 78.3-81.6- 24 8) 75-78.2- 23 9) 71.7-74.9- 22 10) 68.3-71.6- 21 11) 65-68.2 - 20 Good Luck.
  11. your ideas seem good enough, but you need to work on your grammatical skills, like subject-verb agreement, spellings etc. For ex, in your last para: 1) consider about(there's no need for about) 2)which was not at all useful- should be is, and useful. 3)edicts- addicts 4)were really problemetic- are really problematic. Also, try to make your sentences more concise. For example- "But the media people wrote bad about themand she got depressed and commited suicide, which eventually resulted their broke-up" There's really no need to specify that they her suicide resulted eventually in their break-up!! Its quite obvious I think. Instead, add further specific details and examples to support your ideas. Hope this helps.
  12. @stator: you've got the wrong info mate. Mr Joseph, in those videos, has clearly mentioned that the relation between word count and score(like you mentioned in your post) is for the 2nd task specifically, and not the 1st task. The ideal word count for the 1st task is 150-225 words, and the same thing is mentioned in the ETS guidelines also. In fact, there won't be anything much in the 1st task to write about beyond 250 words, Mr Joseph also mentioned in his comments(below the video) that the ideal word count for 1st task is 250 words max. Anyway, I just took my TOEFL few days back, my word count in 1st task was 230 and 2nd task was 486, I got 29 in writing. Anyway, for the 2nd task, there's no need to curtail yourself to a specific limit(say under 400), but if you do write an essay of about 500 words, you have to ensure that your essay is not verbose, and is clear, cohesive and coherent. Hope this clarifies your doubts.
  13. @Masy900... I mentioned the answer to your question in my original post itself...but still, here goes... I had got one extra experimental section in Listening. Usually, there are 2 sections in listening, each has 17 questions and 10 mins time, I got 3 such sections. Reason why i scored less in listening- The 1st section in listening, each lecture and conversation was very lengthy, about 7-8 mins on average, and the questions on those passages were damn tough, all inference/implications questions, basically-questions which require a lot of thinking and looking at the overall lecture. Also, the choices in each of those questions were damn confusing, it wasnt easy at all to narrow them down to even 2 choices, let alone 1. The entire first section was like that. The second section, though not as tough as the 1st one, was also quite difficult. The third one was comparatively easier than the 1st two. But I guess, the third section was the experimental one, because had it been considered, I would have scored more, as that section was easiest of the 3. Another thing, when I knew that my 1st section in listening went bad, I sort of got depressed in the remaining sections, maybe thats why my overall performance dipped in listening, so its best if you tend not to be bogged down by a bad performance in one particular section, and give your best in each section, forgetting what happened in previous ones. Best of luck to all test-takers. And yea, I would really appreciate some more remarks and assessments on my score, specially if there are any chances that my listening sec score might be a problem anywhere, for ex: I've heard some good univs ask for 25 min in each section. And if anyone needs any particular tip in any of the 4 sections, do post here, I'd be glad to help..
  14. Your linking of ideas seem good enough, but you are having problems with grammar and sentence constructions. Try to fix those.
  15. Thanks Guys for your replies, hope my score is sufficient. @nanoo: I didnt really expect so much in speaking, but I did try to ensure in the test, to my level best, to speak as clearly as possible and close to the mike. Most important factor that judges your speaking skills is how much effort the listener has to make to understand what you are speaking. And also, do try to adhere to the format for each of the 6 speaking tasks given in youtube(notefull videos), those are really helpful and present your speech in an organized way...
