    Sentence meaning

Hey guys, I was watching a TV show, Seinfeld, a lot of you probably know about it, and I encountered the following sentence "I guess that just about does it" which sounds to me weird, messy one. The context of the conversation was after Elaine got her stuff from Jerry and was kinda satisfied that all her stuff is there, paused for a while and said the above. Can anyone please help me understand whats the meaning of this sentence? Thanks a lot
  2. Thanks a lot lilybass for your reply. it was very helpful. Best to you
  3. Thanks for your reply, I also chose B, but it seems that the correct answer is C as the book suggests. your are correct that we have a comparative condition here. The only explanation that I came up with is that we have a logical/ illogical comparative condition here.Take for example that its not correct when we say " the climate in the north is hotter than the south", there is an illogical expression after " than" (... than the climate in the south). I think we have the same situation here. but I wanted to make sure that others will agree with me in the above. thanks a lot again.
  4. Hello, I have this question, and I'd like to know the extrapolation for choosing the correct answer Foods of animal origin generally supply greater amounts of iron to the diet than ---------- (A) are foods of plant origin, (B) foods of plant origins © do foods of plant origin (D) plant origin foods I'm confused between B and C and I can't quiet know why one of them is incorrect. many thanks
  5. Hello everyone, I have this question please In 1987 a Canadian astronomer, Ian Shelton, spotted a supernova -------- looking at some photographs of the stars. A- was B- during C- as if D- while he was. I'm highly confused between choosing "during" , and " while he was". in the Grammar book. it's mentioned that " during" is a preposition that requires only a noun, noun phrase or a pronoun. Isn't " looking" a noun? because it has an -ing form. why we can't assume that the second clause is not reduced (reduced adverb clause)?. many thanks
  6. Thanks a lot for all your replies. they make sense now from what I read, prepositions can be used before an adjective clause, for example: There are a number of ways by which a message can be sent, That was the man to whom I was referring. are these prepositions grammatical? when do I know that a preposition is used correctly or not. I can't quite recognize the difference in using a preposition in these example sentences and the preposition that had been used in the Dragonfly sentence. Stratospheric thanks.
  7. Hello, There are a bunch of verbs when they come before "that" we should use a " verb word" in the complement for a verb. ex: incorrect: I propose that the vote is secret ballot, correct: I propose that the vote be secret ballot. I'm confused about the following sentence, the book show both the incorrect and the correct sentence. what I don't understand is why " has" has been changed to " have" after " that". while all we need is a verb word incorrect: the law requires that everyone has his car checked at least once a year, correct: the law requires that everyone have his car checked at least once a year. many thanks
  8. Hello, I have this question please: Dragonflies feed on a large variety of insects .......... catch in flight. A- in which they, B- which they , C- there are to, D- there are a. I was confused between choosing A and B, cause they both seem valid. I'd like to know why choice A is incorrect. many thanks.

    "then " meaning

Hi everyone, while I was reading an article in the Economist, I found this "then" and I tried to comprehend why the writer put it but with no avail. the sentence is " Earlier that year, the then railway minister, Liu Zhijun, was detained of suspicion of corruption". definitely the writer put then for a purpose, and I hope if someone can explain it to me please. many thanks. Quick question: does the style of writing in the the Economist is on par with RC in the GRE exam? or the one needs further practice and have to look for something else?

  14. Hi pal, Yes, yes I got it and let me paraphrase it to you " only by ignoring decades of mismanagement and inefficiency" this part tells us that the company is doing well and any new money will provide anything but those quick fixes man... only now I can see it clearly. I'm in a state of nirvana right now, because of you " shukran habibi" to you, in my language
  15. you chose correct pal,, I chose wrong, I selected total and complete because apparently I have a defect in interpreting the whole sentence correctly. and I would like to hear from you my interpretation of the whole sentence when I first read it ( and every time I read it ) is : the company had a decades of mismanagement and inefficiency, so any amount of money won't provide them any complete (or permanent solution ), yes the new money would provide them ( fleeting, transient, quick fix ... etc) solution. but my problem is in the negation which is located in ....would provide anything other than..... . does't this negation means ( the money will provide the company everything except...) ? because of this negation I chose complete and trivial and I ignored the correct choices completely. Can you explain my why pleaaaaaaaaase ?
