  1. Hey Fellow Urch Bloggers, I'm looking to apply next fall to an MA/MS program in economics and given the lack of public information about these programs I was hoping other applicants, current students, or someone with knowledge of a program listed below could weigh in on my profile and prospective programs. I'm not sure if I'll go into industry or post-grad work in econ or poli sci after, that all depends on interests and the results of my masters. Thanks in advance for any advice/info that's offered. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 50 US Undergraduate Degree: Dual B.S Economics/B.A International Affairs Undergrad GPA: 3.16/4.00 Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: Q:166 V:162 W:4.5 Math Courses: Business and Econ Calc I (B), Calc II (C-), Calc III (C-), Linear Algebra I (B), Econ Courses (grad-level): N/A Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Micro (A-), Macro (C+), Intermediate Micro (B), Intermediate Macro (B+), Econ Dev II (B), Int. Econ Policy I (B+), Game Theory (B+), Econometrics I (B), Int. Econ Policy II (B), Econ Sociology (A), Energy Economics (B+), Proseminar (B-) Other Courses: Global Health and Development (A) Letters of Recommendation: 1 LOR from well known Professor-FED affiliate, 1 LOR from Professor-decent publishing in field, 1 LOR from Professional Economist (well-known in industry) Research Experience: 1.5 yrs as an Academic RA for different university affiliate professors Teaching Experience: N/A Work Experience: 2 years in transfer pricing consulting (econ related) for a good firm Research Interests: Political Economy, Development, Applied Micro SOP: Not yet constructed (I'll make it enticing) Concerns: GPA and Math grades obviously. Are they just going to get me thrown out? Other: Applying to I'm wondering which of the following masters in economics programs might just be a waste of $100 and which ones I might actually have a shot at being admitted to. Any other recommendations are certainly appreciated. I'm thinking of the following; JHU M.S, M.A UCSB, M.A DUKE, M.A NYU, M.S. Maryland, MAE Michigan, M.A. BU, M.A. Georgetown, M.A UT-Austin, M.A Wisconsin MSc LSE, MSc UCL, MSc Warwick. So think I can get into anywhere? Thanks.
  2. Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. Knowing a little bit more about the British system makes the decision making process easier. And yes I'm doing ok, it's easy to see how one can come off as a twitchy anxiety ridden college senior on these threads. As far as the universities you mentioned I am looking mainly at UCL, Warwick, Manchester, and Essex. I have considered LSE but I think that might also be out of my range, but who knows I'll apply. I know they have a two year and a one year program. Even though I've done the undergraduate econ work which usually positions someone for the one year program I wouldn't be wholly adverse to retaking some courses if it meant admittance into the program. Masters in the U.S are generally two years anyway. Once again thank you for the information and advice! If anyone else has some added info on the topic or so happens to be on the admissions board for LSE roaming through these threads to scoff at disgruntled seniors feel free to offer some advice.
  3. Hello All, I'm currently a senior undergraduate student at a top 50 university who plans on taking a year off to work before I apply to graduate school. I'm interested in first pursuing a masters program in economics ideally pursuing a PhD afterwards. I am not applying directly to a PhD program because I don't think I am competative enough as it stands. Having started as an International Affaris major I was late to start a math sequence and pushed through the courses in order to attain a BS in Economics from my institution. Now I'm uncertain if I could be competative enough for a non-terminal master program here in the U.S or the U.K. My undergraduate GPA is 3.3 as a dobule major in International Affairs and Economics. I've taken Calc I-III but performed at C level in them however am receiving an A in Linear Algebra half way into the semester. Practice GRE's are placing me consistently at a 168 Q and 163 V and this is with only about a couple weeks of studying. It looks like I will have 2 solid letters of recommendation from two economics professors at my university, one of whom is my thesis advisor who is fairly well known. I'm simply worried that my poor performance has hindered any opportunity of me getting into a solid masters program. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on where perhaps to apply? I'm also open to retaking calc II-III to bolster my application if need be.
