  1. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and experiences. it's really helpful. My motivation is to look for a different life style. Life as a Phd student and after PhD is quite different from working in the industry, isn't it? Plus, the earning potential for Finace PhD isn't that bad. I worked 60 hours per week on average and sometime 70+ with good pay. But I have little time and energy for my family and I'm certainly not enjoying it. I'm hoping that going for PhD will allow me to work on subjects that interest me most, while giving me flexibility to spend more time with family. tm_guru, you mentioned you work 60 hours a week. Is that normal for a PhD student? Are you required to go to office everyday? I'm expecting flexible working hours in PhD program.
  2. Sort of Mathematical Finance program (not in one of the top business school)
  3. You are absolutely right. That's exactly why I'm so hesitating. I definitely love a career in academia. My question is how difficult it is to become a professor. In fact how many PhD students are able to get a job in universities after graduate?
  4. Thanks tab. But I already got a master's degree. I'm hoping a PhD can open new doors for me. What new doors? I don't really know...
  5. Hello everyone, this is my first posting here. if you could give me some advice with regards to Phd vs Working, it’s much appreciated. I’m a senior analyst working at a major fincancial company with interest in perusing PhD. There must be pros and cons for giving up one’s career to spend 4-5 years as student. I'm wondering if there is anybody quit a promising job to get PhD. What happen when you complete Phd? Is it easy to become faculty or land on a better job in financial industry? To be honest, my purpose to get PhD is for pure personal fulfillment. But if the financial presure is too much for my family, I might have to give it up. The reality is that I have to feed a baby and pay my mortages. It's not difficult to making good money in industry. Any comment can be helpful. Thanks. My background: MSc in Finance, CFA Charter Holder, FRM Certification. 4yr+ experience in major banks
