  1. Honestly, I don't know exactly about the Finance Programs but from what I have heard from other students both universities are pretty good. I think that you should look carefully through the faculty at those universities and decide with whom you are really interested in working with. For me it's not exactly about how good is the faculty since the PhD program is more about working with faculty, so it's more about who you really want to work with....
  2. CliffsNotes Math Review for Standardized Tests This book goes through all concepts and teaches very good strategies for acing the GRE.
  3. Yah I really thought very deep about this but this time I was thinking in looking very closely to the faculty members and see if there is a match in their current research interests. For the four programs I posted up there I have found at least one faculty member that has the same research interests and I am planning to contact them by June/July in order to get to know them better.
  4. Yes, unfortunately the timing wasn't perfect because I was just finishing the SOP's to finish my applications when my brother died. I applied for four programs last time and I am considering applying for at least 8 this time, but I am trying to get the better programs that fit my research interests. I am looking for the universities where the faculty is interested in studying the topic as I and of course I am planning to contact them in June before I complete my application to get to know more about them.
  5. Guys, So this is my situation. I have already applied for a PhD in Strategy for Fall 2013 and I have chosen some top tier universities (Berkeley, UCLA, Pittsburgh and Drexel) however I must admit that I wasn't ready to complete my application and in the last moment I had to face a situation (I lost someone just before the application deadlines affecting the quality of my applciations) that didn't allow me to improve my chances of getting admitted. I was expecting and in fact I wasn't admitted to the programs I applied for :blue: However I am still highly interested in getting into a PhD program and I have been trying to improve my profile in order to get admitted for Fall 2014 (Yes I am considering reapplying). Since December I have been working on my Research Proposal which includes the proposed problem of study, the objectives, the scope and the proposed methodology of running this research. Additionally I have started new training to retake the GRE and I am aiming to get results like 162Q 160V. I have identified programs that better match my profile and here are the ones that I am considering applying: - Ross School of Business (UMichigan) - Fisher Business School (Ohio State) - Richard Ivey School of Business (Canada - University of West Ontario) - This one being my preferred - Nottingham Business School (UK) My profile isn't that brilliant but I am hopping that having a clear definition of my intentions and having identified the research topic in which I am interested will help me improve my chances of getting admitted: - MBA from Brandeis University, GPA 3.3, Focus in Finance (worked as a research assistant) - Bachelor degree from a Mozambican University, graduated top 10% of my class and experience with research. Participated in multiple research project and resulted on internal publication (the papers are accessible for current students in the college), Focus in Finance - Retaking GRE by June/July aiming 162Q 160V - Fulbright Scholar and received other fellowships Now to my questions: 1. Do you think I should try to reapply for the universities I applied for admission of Fall 2013? 2. Regarding recommendation letters, can I approach the professors who previously recommended me to ask them to write new LOR's? Should I find new recommenders? 3. If I achieve the aimed GRE scores do you think I have any chance of being admitted in any of those programs?
  6. Hello I am an international student and I have graduated May 2012 from Brandeis IBS, GPA 3.3 but with some research experience. My GRE scores aren't better, that's why I decided to work harder this year to improve them. I am hoping I will score something around 160V 162Q (previously I was around 150, 157). I was wondering if it wasn't better this time to take the GMAT instead since some programs mention their preference for the GMAT?? My top choice was Berkeley off course, but I am looking wider and this time I applied for Drexel (but I sent my GRE scores late, so I am not sure they will accept my application), Pittsburgh and Utah. This time I am considering applying overseas as well. I saw a program at Uppsala University (Sweden) that is very interesting and I am also considering Nottingham University (UK). My new problem is the recommendation letters.Do I need to find new recommenders? Can I ask the same recommenders to write a new recommendation letter for me? Thanks
  7. Hello all, I graduated last year and I wanted to write a thank you email for a professor of mine. He hasn't done anything especial only that I learned a lot with him. I wasn't the best student he ever had, but because of his lessons I am getting promoted today on my company. I feel like I wish I was a better student while I was taking his classes and that made me think if it would be okay for me to send him a thank you email. I don't want t look like a bootlicker so I am wondering if it would be a good idea to send him that email? Thanks
  8. Hi, First of all, congrats for your results. I assume that you applied for a PhD program because you are interested on a career in academia and I believe that if you do so you better go to a very good program. What is a good program is the real question... You can choose a program from a very high ranked university because of your future career prospects but you have to make sure you identify yourself with the program. What do you think of the ASU program? Do you like the faculty profile? Have you spoken with any current students to get any insights of what the program is like? Do you like what you hear from them? I would suggest you would start with that so that you get an overview of what would be if you join ASU. On other hand, personally I believe that it would be a better deal to complete the master degree at Toulouse (if you have the financial capabilities), work very hard to get stronger recommendation letters, a strong GPA and most important get experience as an RA and/or TA. This would be a great deal to apply for other PhD program at Berkeley, UCLA, etc. I personally agree with rsolter when he says that phoenix might not be your first choice as an international student you have to keep in mind that you are going to spend the next 5 years of your life there and if you aren't able to adjust it's going to be harsh for you. I don't know pretty much about Phoenix, only that has a very hot summer, warm winters and very good mexican food :). Hope that helps
  9. Hello all, I was trying to apply for this years cycle admission for the PhD program in business studies. However I am not getting admitted in any of the 5 universities I picked. I am really into a career in academia so I am thinking in reapplying next year. I am planning to retake the GRE (or GMAT) in order to strengthen my profile since my graduate GPA is low (3.3). I was wondering if you would advise me to reapply to the same universities I tried this year, or to choose different programs? Besides, do I need to ask new recommendation letters? Can I ask the same professors who wrote my previous recommendation letters or should I pick new professors? Regards
  10. Thank you very much for your advice :)
  11. Hello, So my deadlines are approaching and my reccommenders haven't submitted the recommendation yet and I am freaking out. I have contacted them and one replied saying that she was aware of the deadline and she will submit the recommendation soon. Another hasn'r replied at all :( What should I do???????? There is only 1 day left to submit the recommendations..... :grief: :dejected: freaking out
  12. Guys, I am wirtting my statement of purpose and I already lost the number of times I made a modification. My deadlines are approaching and I need to get a final version real soon. My problem is related with starting the SOP I want to have a hook. I started explaining how my childhood (my father was a professor of economics and I use to get involved in his research) impacted my decision of pursuing an academic career and then I moved to the next paragraph where I describe the research topic I would like to work on (emerging market) and finally I move to my undergrad experience. However after reasing some samples I have seen many samples starting out like "I want a PhD in business because..." I am confused, should I start this way? Thanks
  13. Hello all, I am writing about my faculty and research interests for a PhD application. My research interest lies in the importance of intellectual propriety in emerging markets and how this affects the business environment in those markets (special focus for African Markets). I reviewed the faculty profiles, read some of their work and two professors called my attention. The first professor research focus more on intellectual propriety and the second one has cited as current research interests doing business in emerging markets. Certainly I would be more inclined to work with the first professor but I believe that I could work with either of them. Should I mention both of them in the statement? Or should I choose one and maybe I may switch later (after admission?)? Additionally, I read works from both but should I mention how their previous work relates with my research interest? Thanks
  14. Hello all I am applying for a PhD in UC Berkeley and I have to write the personal history statement. I know I should talk about my background and how I overcame some difficulties and decided to pursue graduate studies. I do have an idea of taking about my multi cultural background, under represented, challenges faced during studies and all. But I would love to have a hook up start. Any one has an idea how to start??? PS: I don't like the start sample given by UC Thanks,
