OP I'm having the exact same choice as you do.... My interests are in metrics theory and game. SD seems to have better placement record these years than Wisconsin, but in general they seem to be more empirically inclined, and their metrics suffered quite a loss from losing White and Granger. Wisconsin on the other hand seems to be growing these years. It's a really tough choice for me, too. PMed you already.

Well, I'm no expert, but from what I gather, a math major shouldn't find it hard to pass the prelims, especially if it is the prelims at Wisconsin. I have seen comments which attribute their relatively high attrition rate to the mathematical rigor involved in the tests. This should by no means be a problem for a math major like you. Besides, the first year courses are supposed to give you the economic training you probably still lack of at this stage, so in the end the disadvantage should be neglegible, and strong math might even turn out to be an advantage. But again, this is only my opinion and you should be aware of the uncertainty. You need to make the decision yourself :)

Math Courses(undergrad): Linear Algebra (A), Diff Eq(A), Probability and Statistics I (A+), Probability and Statistics II (A+), Functional Analysis (A). Math/other Courses(grad): Grad Stochastic Modeling (at the exchange institution) (A), Grad Real Analysis (A), Grad Metrics (ongoing), Grad Macro (ongoing). Letters of Recommendation: Strong letters (I hope...), but from weak recommenders. Stat prof whom I coauthored a paper with (this should be very positive), AP at exchange institution (also stats department), Undergrad econ thesis advisor (quite positive I guess). Research Experience: Undergrad thesis on Demography/Labor, half finished, mainly using Dynamic Optimization. Good quality stat paper, very technical, on the asymptotic bias correction of a certain class of nonparametric estimators. Teaching Experience: Absolutely none Research Interests: (Theoretical and Applied) Econometrics. SOP: Not sure. Might want to explain my stats research a little bit. Maybe also how I became interested in econometrics. Concerns: My letter of recommendation could be stronger. As you can see I have only one econ prof out of my 3 recommenders... All others are stats. Other: Applying to: uPenn Wharton, MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, USC. Mainly targeting econometrics programs. Not sure what range I should be targeting, mainly because of the LOR issue.

I am very interested in trying my luck at the top 10 programs. But I heard that to do that you need a quant above 95th percentile. Unfortunately, as I took the old GRE, although I got a full score, the new scale evaluates me at 166, which is the 94th percentile.:upset: Would this be an issue?

@Walras Thank you very much for the information! I looked at the IDEA ranking and I am quite surprised. While most top schools are still there, princeton ranks at 20. What's most surprising is stanford, which ranks at 112 (well I mean they've got the best stat dept in the world...). As you mentioned, the ranking is biased (i guess every ranking is biased in way or another ;p) How much credit would you give to these rankings? Actually, I was originally considering trying my luck at stanford, do you think that would still be worth it?

Hi everyone :) I'm an undergraduate econ major student who will be applying for PhD in economics soon. I'm quite math/stat oriented, so I guess in grad school the direction I'll be focused on would econometrics. I've also done a research in nonparametric statistics with a professor, and expecting a working paper to come out soon. However I'm not quite sure what schools I should be applying for, since econometrics seems to be a quite distinct division from other branches in economics. Would it be reliable if I just look at the rankings for economics programs? Is there a ranking out there specifically for econometrics? I also heard that most statistics done in econometrics is more focused on parametrics and models, but the topic I am interested in is non-parametrics (as can be seen from the research I did in undergraduare). So I'm curious what are some schools with strong nonparametric econometrics in particular? Any ideas would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

I know that Stanford has a top statistics department and a top economics department as well. But I heard that the strength of its economics department lies in game theory and IO. So I would like to know how its econometrics ranks. Does the strength of the statistic department pass through to its econometrics? Any idea would be very much appreciated!
