I got an 3-year doctoral offer from Sciences Po, Paris., full funded. Because I have got a master, I can directly start the research with supervisor. (I was told that every year 2 or 3 students can have opportunities to visit in Harvard, Princeton, Columbia) For US universities, I got an AD from UWM (funding comes from 2nd year given passing the prelim) Which one is better? Maybe let put the high attrition rate of UW-Madison's prelim aside first and just compare the 3-year sciences po program with the 5-year US PhD program. Are there anyone planning to join UWM, maybe we can get to know each other online. BTW, do you have any idea on where to live? (Seems that EH,UH,HS are halls for graduate students but some seniors suggested me alternative choices.) I want to have more information on it.

rekovu how do you think Minnesota a non-top program? The econ phd at Minnesota should be top 5 -10, at least top15,right?

Insti I think you misunderstood my ""agree". I did not mean that I think other programs out of top 20 can not help students succeed. I just thought that if I study very hard and still could not pass the prelims and courses, then I should doubt whether I have the capability of surviving in academia, then now UWM may check it.

Insti Thanks for your comments! I just thought they sent this attractive AD to a lot of rejected applicants. So I feel upset about it.

Thanks Insti, I just did not know how many "transferable" master offers they sent. I thought most rejected applicants got this attractive email which made me upset.

Hi to2012, Did you receive a similar email from UWM? What is your final decision? From the statistics, UWM offered 25-30 in 2011 and 19 in 2012, I guess they want to cut the funding without shrinking the PhD program, which leads to this strange admission.

Really helpful suggestion! I will think it again. No matter what my final decision is, your words at least let me know studying 80 hours per week does not guarantee anything. Many thanks!

The problem is that the discrepancy is large. The other offer is not even in US, neither UK, neither TSE nor SSE. Can you come up with any other economics programs? If not, I guess the reputation discrepancy is large enough.... I did not apply to many US programs, UWM is the lowest ranked one in US that I applied to. It is not because of my confidence, just some trade-off concerns.

Thanks! I also say that to my self, a "unfunded PhD AD" makes me comfortable. But unfortunately it is not...I think 1st-year unfunded PhD doesn't need to pay the tuition fee - 25K/year. Moreover, we are registered as "Master". So one of my concerns is that whether there's gonna be some unexpected "practice issues" after the first year. (Well, maybe I worried too much. A university like UWM shouldn't play any trick on it, right?)

This really scared me > If I failed a top 15 prelim, it might imply that it is hard for me to become a good researcher, given that I have tried my best to prepare for the exams.

I asked actually. They said twice, same as normal PhD students.

I was rejected by the PhD in Econ at UWM, they recommend me to the new master program. (I think they sent quite a lot of this kind of rejections, it is a quite nice email:orange:) They said that I can enroll in 1st year PhD course, totally same as that for PhD students. If I got average grade of B and pass prelim exams, which is also required for PhD candidates, then I can be guaranteed to be transferred to the 2nd year PhD program with full funding. It sounds like a "no tuition waiver and no funding PhD AD" although I am registered as a master student, what do you think about it? I only want to do PhD, and all other PhD offers are outranked by UWM's. If I can afford for it and I have confidence in getting the required grades, should I go there? ---- PS: I think part of the reason why I did not get good offers is that I did not learn much econ courses, not even the intermediate level. I graduate from maths background. Also I got quite low score (3) for GRE AWA. Thanks a lot for any suggestions and comments? Please tell me your choice and concerns if you also received this rejection email.

I have taken GRE 2 years ago and got not bad scores for Q and V. but the AW is quite low..I wanna take it again without doing Q and V. Is it technically doable in new GRE? One of my senior did this in old GRE, he just did not do any questions in Q and V, then he got N.A (I guess) for previous two sections and an AW score. Can I do it like him? If possible, I will just take AW and submit the scores of both the two times. I don't want to prepare GRE again..my 1st language is not English, it is really tough for me!! Thanks for telling !!
